The figure used for this unit is from the Archfiends set from the D&D Miniatures line. The name of the figure used is 41, Gravehound.
A repaint of this miniature can also be found in the Curse of Undeath set from the D&D Dungeon Command line. The name of the figure is Gravehound.

Character Bio: Nicholas Esenwein has kennels at his fortress on Feylund, of course. Those kennels are ordinarily silent. Not because they are empty, but rather because the pack of Darkprowl Thralls is silent when it is not leaping upon its unsuspecting prey.

Spoiler Alert!

Mindless Pack
After revealing an Order Marker on this card, roll the 20-sided die.
  • If you roll a 1-5, you may take a turn with 1 Thrall you control.
  • If you roll a 6-15, you may take a turn with up to 2 Thralls you control.
  • If you roll a 16 or higher, you may take a turn with up to 3 Thralls you control.

Pounce Special Attack
Range 3. Attack 5.
Instead of attacking normally, a Darkprowl Thrall may attempt to pounce. To pounce, choose a non-adjacent small or medium figure whose base is not higher or lower than 5 levels from the base of the attacking Thrall. If the figure is destroyed, immediately place the attacking Thrall on the space the figure occupied. If the figure is not destroyed, destroy the attacking Thrall.

Stealthy 4
When an unengaged Darkprowl Thrall is attacked with a normal or special attack, add 4 defense dice to the defending Thrall.

-Rulings and Clarifications-

  • Q: If I reveal an OM on the last Darkprowl Thrall and roll a 10 for Mindless Pack, and I take a turn with the Darkprowl Thrall where it dies, can I still take the second Thrall turn with a different Thrall, even though all Darkprowl Thralls are destroyed?
A: Yes, you can. The power happens after revealing an OM and the number of turns you may take is determined then. There are no additional requirements to take other turns.

Fun power set, but quite reliant on those powers thanks to rather low stats. C (Dok's Master List)

Unit Strategy Review

One of the designs I was most eager to get out of play testing. Really great unit to round out the thralls.

They also benefit from Morgoloth's Swarming Vermin power, which should allow them additional opportunities to selectively pounce.

First off, the link to the DKs goes to Khosumet.

Speaking of DKs, I’m interested in how these would play with them. I think using a screen of them and then using the DKs as clean up would be cool...

120 Darkprowl Thralls x4
270 DKs x3
450 Taelord
510 Air Elementals x2

Lead with DPTs then once you get down to one or two follow up with DKs.

When it comes to Nicky and Thralls, this one is unique with the range and varies from the Badru Wolves in where these can pounce without necessarily having to kill the figure, just doing high damage with 5 attack.

Never realized these guys would work with the Death Knights. That sounds fun.

The C3V Rules Team would like to add the following R&C:
Q: If I reveal an OM on the last Darkprowl Thrall and roll a 10 for Mindless Pack, and I take a turn with the Darkprowl Thrall where it dies, can I still take the second Thrall turn with a different Thrall, even though all Darkprowl Thralls are destroyed?

The Zombie Hulk link in the synergies section currently links to the Skull Demon, instead of the Zombie Hulk.

Had a fun game with Nick and the Thralls yesterday. Playing on Fire Isles with a dozen Thralls against a "lava army" (Obsidian Guards, Brunak, Kurrok, Fire Elementals). Obsidians dive into the molten lava and start chucking it at approaching Thralls. After a few die, Nick swoops in to leverage his higher attack. He kills an Obsidian which raises a Thrall in the molten lava... 20! After that Nick flies back to the safety of the Glyph of Lodin (putting water between him and units with Water Weakness/Negative Element). Then a Darkprowl Thrall Pounces successfully on another Obsidian... also in the lava... 19 + Lodin!!!

I may just be missing something, but I'm struggling to see how their pounce ability differs from that of the Badru. The language appears functionally identical to me.

Can someone highlight the distinction?

The slight rewording is due to Darkprowl being Common Heroes. There is no functional difference.

You misunderstood my statement. I meant in the strategic sense. With Nick, the Darkprowls don’t necessarily have to worry about successfully pouncing because Nick can bring them back. They can just use their high threat range to get a strong attack of 5 off. This varies them from the Badru because the Badru don’t have the opportunity to return so a successful pounce is crucial to the Wolves’ survival.

I had a feeling that's what you meant by that statement.

Last game with Nick/Thralls I did successfully Pounce someone to death in lava and then roll a 20.

There was one game where I witnessed Ne-Gok-Sa mindshackle Charos, a dragon rider custom of mine, and Kelda, all in a row. Basically the entire army for the other player was stolen with perfect 20s in just three turns.

Luck and chance can be insane sometimes.

in regards to STEALTHY 4, I think I know the answer, but I'm asking here because It's not in the Rulings and Clarifications section and maybe someone else has the same question (and also I'm not 100% that I have it right).

Q: If a Darkprowl Thrall is adjacent to a figure being attacked by a SHOTGUN BLAST SPECIAL ATTACK, or within Mimring's FIRE LINE SPECIAL ATTACK, it still get's to "add 4 defense dice" if it's unengaged, right? Is a figure "affected" by an attack considered to be the same as being attacked since they're rolling defense dice?

I think the answer is yes but I couldn't find a ruling that spelled it out.

Yes. Stealthy just says "When an unengaged Darkprowl Thrall is attacked", so regardless of the type of attack, or means of targeting, if it is unengaged, it gets the bonus defense dice.
