NOTE: Brainiac requires 1x Glyph of Shrinking Ray Gun

The figure used for this unit is a Heroclix figure from the Brave and the Bold set.
Its model number and name are #031 / Brainiac.

_________________________________________________________________
Character Bio - Brainiac was once a radical Coluan scientist called Vril Dox who, having attempted to overthrow the Computer Tyrants of Colu, was sentenced to death. In his last moments before disintegration, his consciousness was attracted light years away to Milton Fine, a human sideshow mentalist who worked under the alias "Brainiac". Needing cranial fluid to maintain his possession of Fine, Dox went on a murder spree. He discovered that Fine had genuine powers, which he frequently wielded against Superman.
Before Vril Dox escaped his death sentence on Colu, he was a collector of civilizations and lifeforms. To collect entire cities and cultures of lifeforms, he would first shrink them and store them into bottled containers for observation. His practice even brought him into contact with Krypton, as he captured and collected its famous Capital City of Kandor. When Superman learned of this, he did everything he could to inevitably free the Kandorians.

-Rulings and Clarifications-
  • Brainiac is an Event Hero and follows Event Hero rules.
  • Q - Can I use Brainiac's 12th Level Intellect special power to alter the results of a special attack, leaving engagement attack, or any other special power that rolls attack dice?
  • A - Per the official rules, special attacks cannot be modified by other special powers, including this one. However, 12th level intellect can absolutely be used to alter the results of any normal attack, leaving engagement attack or special power. Just remember that special attacks cannot be modified by any other special power, including this one.
  • Q - What happens to the figures placed on this card?
  • A - The collected figures are not necessarily out of the game and they are not destroyed. They are just extremely difficult to get back. If there was a figure that could bring itself back into the game, or some type of summoning power on another card that might be able to bring back other collected figures, the collected figures may be able to come back. While on Brainiacs' card due to Miniaturized Collection that figure is still part the controlling player's army but not currently under that player's control. Therefore any special power that refers to the figure in the bottle as a figure "you control" cannot activate. On the same note no power that requires clear sight or a limited distance of the figure can activate as that figure is not on the battlefield. Order Markers can still be placed and revealed on these figures however.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

NAME = BRAINIAC
SECRET IDENTITY = VRIL DOX

SPECIES = COLUAN
UNIQUENESS = EVENT HERO
CLASS = CONQUEROR
PERSONALITY = CALCULATING

SIZE/HEIGHT = MEDIUM 5

LIFE = 12

MOVE = 6
RANGE = 4
ATTACK = 6
DEFENSE = 6

POINTS = 800

MINIATURIZED COLLECTION
Start the game with the Glyph of Shrinking Ray Gun on this card. Brainiac cannot lose this glyph by receiving wounds unless he is destroyed. After moving and before attacking, you may choose a Tiny Unique Hero within 4 clear sight spaces and roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 18 or higher, place the figure on this card.

TELEPATHIC MANIPULATION
When an Order Marker is revealed on any other Army Card in play that does not have the Mental Shield special power, you may immediately choose a figure from that Army Card. Roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 7 or higher, you may inflict a wound on a figure adjacent to the chosen figure.

12TH LEVEL INTELLECT
After any attack dice, defense dice, or the 20-sided die is rolled for Brainiac or any figure within clear sight of Brainiac, you may immediately remove an "X" Order Marker from this card and add or subtract a skull, shield, blank, or 1 from that roll.

SUPER STRENGTH

FLYING

:up: Looks good Griff. 12th LI might need a bit of help in the language department as it doesn't quite flow when reading, but the idea & mechanics are sound.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Thanks. I had Bats working with me on the 12th Level Intellect yesterday, and I am happy with the direct as well, but the wording could probably use a SirG touch to it.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Pretty cool stuff here. I don't know this guy at all. I've seen some Brainiacs on Superman or Justice League cartoons, but not this version. Certainly don't want to be shrunk and close to him or just plain Tiny all the time.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Maybe you can add two to the roll for Miniaturized Collection if the figure doesn't have Superstrength. Just an idea I had. I like the design.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

The collection is as simple as him sucking them into a bottle. I don't think Super Strength reducing the roll makes a lot of sense, and I don't want to add more text to the power unless it is really warranted.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Agreed about not adding any more text to the card if possible. :)
One thing I was thinking as I read it over again though, is that it's not clear whether you can use Telepathic Manipulation after Brainiac is destroyed. A clear sight restriction or something like it might help:

TELEPATHIC MANIPULATION
When an Order marker is revealed on any other Army Card in play, you may immediately choose a figure in clear sight of Brainiac that belongs to that Army Card and roll the 20-sided die. If you roll 7 or higher, you may inflict a wound on one figure adjacent to the chosen figure.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Powers on cards are not in affect after they are destroyed unless they state otherwise, so he cannot use the power once he is dead, otherwise Joker could reuse Organize Chaos after his death because you are allowed to still put order markers on destroyed cards (just not reveal them).
With that said, I considered the clear sight restriction, but I didn't like adding more text to the card, and I liked keeping him feeling Event like with his power level. I left off the Mental Shield restriction for the same reason.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Miniaturized Collection is a really interesting and fun power. :) If Atom is placed on his card he can still hop off right? Would Atom reduce Braniac's stats in this way as well? I have the card printed but have only used him once I think.

Figures with Mental Shield need immunity to Telepathic Manipulation.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

No, he can only hop off if he places himself with his own power. There's no provision in Miniaturized Collection for getting off the card.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

So are the figures in the Minitiarized Collection destroyed?

Do they get to be re-placed on the battlefield after Brainiac is destroyed?

If yes, then no, then the roll must be increased. It already is at a 15 with the 12th Level Intellect, without any other bonuses. (30% chance of an auto-destroy - yikes!)

Otherwise, this guy better cost a bunch.

I think leaving off clear sight is fine for any type of mind/mental/telepath type power and fits the theme just fine. Leaving off Mental Shield just feels wrong though, whether he's a common, unique or event hero. Mental Shield = protection from Telepathic powers.

Fair enough. I will work on that update. Though, for the record, this is the one guy who could break through ANY mental shield, mechanical or telepathic. So if Brainiac can't do it, no one ever will.

:word:
He does have to first Shrink you, which is a roll of 4+, but that is also assuming his glyph isn't destroyed, stolen, or knocked away. Still, I wouldn't mind the "collection roll" going up, and I expect it to anyways. I will just go ahead and assume to bump it up to as high as 19.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

If you made it instead of attacking, I think a roll of 16 would work just fine. The effects of the Shrinking Ray only last the round, so he only has however many shots until the end of the round to hit that 16 or whatever else to put them on the card.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Right. And if he ever drops that Shrink Gun, his enemies are gonna do everything they can to ensure he doesn't get it back.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

So I guess my point is that I'm against it going all the way up to 19. I think if that happens, he'll realistically never "collect" anyone - or only very, very rarely, and that'd be a tad disappointing, I think.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Well I only commented that I am prepared for it to go as high as 19 if needed, but I am hoping not at all.

Just so everyone is aware, this guy should be able to take on Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. So a 1,000 point Event Hero would be great, but I am fine with that coming down to like 800 as well.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

I dunno, I'm just theoryscaping this, but I think the ceiling on that OP is more around 600, and he could come in much lower. I think you'll want to bump his life to 13-15 if you're shooing for 800+.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

I agree that he isn't at 800-1,000 yet. But once I start playtesting, I will really start to adjust numbers and stats to get him where I like him. After thinking about it too, I think I prefer him at about 600-800. I like the idea of him being less godlike than the eventual Brainiac 13.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Wait a second.... I thought Event Heroes couldn't have Equipment Glyphs. :razz:

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

They can't equip them, only Unique Heroes can, but I see no reason why we can't break that rule in a way that just starts an Event Hero off with one. Special Powers are special rules that break normal game rules.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Add a line that he can pick up and equip the Shrink Ray Gun so if he loses it, he can get it back.

Re: The Book of Brainiac - Designing

Seems like it would lead to some game play confusion. Braniac carries around a Shrink Ray, but Anti-Monitor can't pick it up or use it. Maybe that's just me.
