Character Bio - Beast Boy has the ability to morph into any animal that he has seen himself or has seen in an illustration [...] These transformations take only a second and Beast Boy has demonstrated that he is capable of rapidly changing his form with little or no effort expended. [One such form is that of a grizzly bear]. The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), also known as the silvertip bear, the grizzly, or the North American brown bear, is a subspecies of brown bear (Ursus arctos) that generally lives in the uplands of western North America [....] Aggressive behavior in grizzly bears is favored by numerous selection variables. Unlike the smaller black bears, adult grizzlies are too large to escape danger by climbing trees, so they respond to danger by standing their ground and warding off their attackers. Increased aggressiveness also assists female grizzlies in better ensuring the survival of their young to reproductive age,” (Wikipedia.org, 2012). _________________________________________________________________

Cool. Looks like it is ready for testing to me. :D

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

Looks solid to me. The only issue I have it MAULER sounds weird as a power name. I know MAUL is taken but I wonder if MANGLE wouldn't be better here. I know this is a small issue so I think he's ready for testing. :D

Well, something I was wondering is ... this is basically Maul except with a restriction against using it on Super Strength figures. Since, at this point, we've pretty much accepted and established that C3G SuperHeroscape is its own separate game from Hasbro's Heroscape, and since I can't see us ever adopting Maul without a restriction against it just tearing up units with Super Strength and since it wouldn't be the first time we've altered text on an official power ... what would folks think about me just calling it "Maul"?

I mean, Mangle is OK, but bears don't mangle, they maul!

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

Looks good, but I am not sure if a bear deserves a 6 for move, I would think 5.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

Yeah, I have seen bears charge while hunting/fishing, and they are fast as all hell.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

If anything, I feel like I could have justified 7, but I wanted to keep more distance between him and the cheetah.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

You know it's funny how people think bears can't run as fast down hill due to their shorter front legs. But bears can run just as fast downhill as up hill. I wish this wasn't the case, it'd be cool to have a design that required you to count one additional space when moving down levels of terrain.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

So ... any thoughts on using the Maul power name here?

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

I wouldn't be against it.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

I'm fine with it as I really don't give a crap about what those that mix Classic and C3G think about the name being the same as Deathstalker's power. We aren't designing for them to be mixed with Classic and Maul makes so much sense for a power name here.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

I'm not necessarily against it at this stage, since 'classic' is starting to become a distant memory for most of our fans, but I do think it may cause something of a stir that we'll have to explain over... and over... again.

How about MAULED?

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

Meh. I don't mind making a stir ... :) Unless I see any major objections, I'm going with Maul at this point.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

SP updated to the Maul title. Sending out to ERB now. :)

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

I thought about Super Strength on him, but I don't think a typical grizzy would be at the same strength level as an enhanced Gorilla City Warrior. If I ever do the Chameleon Simian sculpt, I'll probably go SS there.

Quick joke for you - where do Bears go shopping for Christmas?

At the Maul! Bwahahaha. :p

Thanks!

Beast Boy – Grizzly Bear form

Jack Links Beef Jerky presents, “Messin’ with Sasquatch.” Never mind; it’s just Beast Boy messin’ with my ERB.

Maul
It’s been ages since I’ve played Classic, but I remember that I didn’t have a lot of luck with the Deathstalkers. However, this is such a cool ability. It also tempts you, as you do not want height advantage or any other attack bonuses if you want to improve your Maul chances. Or, you could play more conservatively and take the height advantage, letting chance dictate the Maul’s success. The conservative option is probably smarter, but I love taking the risk. That was probably my mistake with the Deathstalkers. I also think that’s why I had such hilariously bad luck with Beyonder where I relied too much on the d20.

This is certainly a perfect ability for a Bear.

Final Thoughts
Theme check: I know there was discussion about whether to give the Gorilla City Warriors Super Strength. Would you think a Grizzly Bear qualifies?

You selected a perfect special ability. Very nice. I'm certainly not going to mess with this Grizzly!

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

I had thought about commenting originally about SS, but then figured that a bear isn't going to use his strength in the same manner that SS would be used, as in throwing, picking up, charging like a rhino, etc. Didn't seem necessary enough anyway.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

For sure. Nor can I see one really surviving from a great fall.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

Your assumption is indeed correct. :) A "bear hug" power would have been a cool idea. I'll have to keep ideas like that in my back pocket for future designs for this guy.

Thanks for the feedback!

It's brief and I will be too. I love it. Clear, simple, fun. The SS limit makes sense, Maul is a great Grizzly Bear power. I was kind of hoping for a Bear Hug (remove OMs?), but this is definitely sweet and simple.

I don't recall how this fits into BB larger play--I assume though that this form being "killed" doesn't knock BB out entirely. One life would seem too small if it did.

Assuming my assumption is accurate , I'm definitely on board with this build. Fun, smart, simple.

Best, V

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

When you hit it, though, you're putting 3 wounds on a mid-level hero. Any higher than an attack of 3, and he wouldn't be able to maul you hardly at all. So really the attack has to be looked at as a combination of the attack number and the potential of the attack to be unblockable.

And ho-hum is OK for now. He's a bear. Bears maul. They're not that exciting. Hopefully once he's combined with Beast Boy, the excitement will be there for you!

Cheers,
Bats :)

Attack seems low for a grizzly bear...grizzly bears kick peoples' butts. Maybe attack 3 is this bear.

Maul from Deathstalkers, right? I've only used them a couple times, three if you count removing them from their bases to use for my Sentinels. Maul doesn't seem to trigger very much, even when you get three tries per turn.

I guess my initial reaction is...ho hum.

Re: The Book of Beast Boy (Grizzly Bear) - Design Phase

It's funny that people think Maul is such an awesome power that you should try to get it to trigger more by not taking height advantage, but really you have a better chance of getting some wounds if you take height as often as possible even with Maul and you just wait for the Maul to happen with 4 dice.

I don't know the math there but I remember reading a thread about it when I tried to use the Deathstalkers.
