Character Bio - “Al Pratt was born in 1920. Pratt was a sophomore at Calvin College in 1940 and suffered indignity due to his short stature. This led to him becoming the target of harassment and bullying, and referred to as "Atom Al" by his tormentors. Due to this, he felt he was unable to impress Mary James, the girl of his dreams. One day, feeling sympathetic, he bought dinner for a vagrant who turned out to be Joe Morgan, a former boxing champ. Morgan promised Pratt the young man could be made into a muscular man with the right training. In under one year Pratt became a massively strong fighter with unbelievable strength, and he decided to use his new ability to protect the oppressed as the “mystery man,” Atom” (DCWikia 2015).

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Atom is the classic underdog hero. His big thing is hitting really hard, especially if you're bigger than he is. Kind of a Rudy-like inspirational figure.

He's one of the founding members of the JSA so I wanted to give him a synergy power building off of this and his disciplined, lead by example style. Originally it was a +1 defense to adjacent Mystery Men, but between Jay and what I have planned for Carter Hall Hawkman, there were just too many defensive boosts in this faction. So I went with something a bit different in hopes of getting across the theme of him inspiring his friends to fight through anything and stay disciplined.

I stuck with just Mystery Men for the power, since he really more was around in the Golden Age, rather than in more modern versions of the JSA.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Interesting mechanic for Atomic Punch, but I'm a bit worried it may not get used much in a Mystery Men build.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

I imagine it'd mostly be saved for needing to take down some heavy hitters, or in end game. The X Marker will often be a good option, though, if someone like Hawkman isn't there anymore.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Good point. Overall I like the design.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Stilt-Man has this power:

THE BIGGER THEY ARE . . .
Stilt-Man is always considered to have height advantage over non-flying figures that have height less than 12.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Maybe just switch the title to: ...The Harder They Fall?

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Might have to do just that, yeah. Good catch, T-Spinny.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Stilt-Man has that also.

. . . THE HARDER THEY FALL
When Stilt-Man is destroyed, before removing him from the battlefield, choose 4 spaces in a straight line from Stilt-Man. Roll an unblockable attack die against each figure on the chosen spaces.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Well...we threw ourselves into a corner didn't we?

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

So, which era is this representing? I assume it's post-radiation but pre-size-changing?

I feel like the wording on Society Fortitude is a bit backwards, and I admit it feels a bit wonky as far as a boost goes, but other than that no issues.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Ozy and Atom would be a regular pairing with that SA.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

T-Spinny, he's the short guy, so he'd be arguing that size doesn't matter. I'd go with that title, but it'd lead to a few too many jokes. :p Maybe:

STANDING UP TO BULLIES ?

Yes, post-radiation, pre-size-changing. Didn't even know he got size-changing powers. That must be New 52? I thought that was just his son, Atom Smasher?

I'm open to wording suggestions. I thought this way of writing it clarified the order of operations pretty well, but that might just be me.

And the boost is different, at least, which is nice. :) I think it's thematic, if a bit wonky.
@Yodaking - not sure where you're going with the Ozy connection. Can you explain?

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

SMARTEST MAN IN THE WORLD
Order Markers may never be removed from this card by an opponent. Before rolling for initiative, if you have at least two Order Markers on this card, you may reveal and remove an “X” Order Marker from this card. If you do, you may look at an Order Marker at random from any one opponent's Army Card. If it is an "X" Order Marker, nothing happens. If it is a numbered Order Marker, place that Order Marker on any Army Card you control. You may reveal it normally on your turn instead of your other Order Marker of the same number. At the end of the round, all Order Markers moved by this special power return to the player who controlled the Order Markers before they were moved.
See the bolded.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Oh, just to get the extra Order Marker to burn? I suppose. Though Silver Surfer likes that even better and figures with Temporal Defense like it fine as well. Doesn't seem game-breaking to me or necessarily worth the combo.

Agreed. May as well have just given him the X...unless you build shenanigans possibly involving both Loki and Ozy..but that's expensive enough that I don't think it's a concern.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Even if you use Loki and Ozy, for that whole investment you're only getting two auto skulls on one attack during the round. There are better uses for both of them, IMO. The special attack never had potential beyond an attack of 9, and that's with Loki and Ozy boosting it, and with you giving up the rest of your round to get that high up. I suspect most of the time it'll just be used as a 4 dice special attack with the occasional "X" Marker auto skull boost.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Like I said, I don't think it's a big deal and that this analysis only shows that it isn't very breakable if at all..and too costly to really even try if you ask me.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Yeah, especially because when you use the points on Ozy or Loki, you miss out on other Mystery Men or Proteges you could be drafting to get those cross synergies working.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

I wasn't bringing up Ozy as a criticism or issue that needed to be address in some way, just putting a spot light on one of his better testing options. I like the Ozy card in general so I would definitely play the two of them together, put the opponents OM on this card along with my X, then reveal them both for 2 skulls added to the attack. If I removed my opponents 3OM and knew he had no final turn, I might even reveal my 3OM on his card too if I were using him on OM2 for +3 skulls on one attack.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Sure, I could see that. I hope you take them for a spin together once he gets to the playtesting phase! :)

Since we have a decent amount of Mystery Men designs out now, I'm probably going to mainly focus on those interactions (plus heavy hitters and squad tests) in the initial.

Re: Atom (Al Pratt) - Design Breathing Period

Understandable, that is generally my approach to initial PTs too in HoSS since the factions are so clearly defined. I prefer to test them in thematically appropriate army builds for the initial to see how they play with their regular friends and allies as if they don't play well with them then the design needs to be tweaked. Then I let the other testers try to come up with non thematic builds to test and see if they are too good when mixed up into random armies.

Looks like the size-change stuff is New 52, so yeah, it can be safely ignored. :D

I'd word it something like this: Opponents cannot move or remove unrevealed Order Markers on the Army Cards of Unique Mystery Man Heroes you control within clear sight of Atom.

But that reads better to me; if we prefer the version you have (or we have some sort of precedent hanging around somewhere) I don't have an issue with it.
