Super Hero City AKA Japes's Custom Crap

Re: Super Hero City

You can make your own quozl. It is really a straight forward process once you get the I-Pac to link your PC to the controls.

That is really nice looking japes. Making me nostalgic for mine.
How does the LEDs for the buttons work? Is that built into the software to light up the right buttons or do you have to activate them manually?
What are you using for a monitor?

I still want to make a racing cabinet someday.

Re: Super Hero City

Wanna sell me your old arcade?

ThIs one is for a friend. He bought all the parts and I am building it as a thank you for all the times he watches our dog.

I am making a third one based off of this custom design. The first one I built was scaled down to a 3/4 scale for when my son was younger and it's pretty much a sit down model for me. It was a prototype that I'm just getting around to replacing. It's not the best quality but if you lived near and bought the internals I'd practically give you the cabinet once the new one was done.

Once I set up the configuration files there is a program that runs the LEDs. This one has single colored LEDs but my sons (which will be gutted for our new one soon) has RGB LEDs so they actually light up the colors from the original arcade...for instance Neogeo games light up four buttons...red, blue, green, and yellow...street fighter lights up two red two blue and two white.

It's not hard but not exactly easy...having a router helps. Most people could build one probably but not everyone could make a nice one. Wood working is something I enjoy but every time I do it I learn something new and get better. Like right now I'm doing two in tandem and the second one has some improvements. I do like this design that I have created as it's pretty slick and lower footprint.

That is really extreme japes. :) :)

You can pick up old cabinets and that eliminates a lot of the woodworking aspect. I agree that you get better the more you do.
My second one was way more versatile than the first. I put the controls in their own removable 'box' making the controls portable.
This is really nice for taking it to a friend's house or playing on a projector. Too bad my friend left it behind when he moved. I am still a little bitter abut that.
From what I understand, the I-Pac is way better now also. Easier to wire and eliminates 'ghosting'.
I have an old Xenophopes cabinet that I would like to turn into a four player set up.

Re: Super Hero City

Wow really love the cabinet! I have one I built about a year ago with a very similar layout and footprint. Really like the slim look to the cabinets. The small footprint helped convince the wife to let me have it next to the kitchen. I'm running 2 U-360's for sticks and 8 RGB LEDs on either side. I noticed you didn't set up an area up top for a marquee. Or do you have some way of doing it perhaps?

I laughed pretty hard at that...funny T.

I use an i-pac2 on the original and this one and I upgraded to an i-pac ultimate on mine for ease of LED and button wiring and yes no ghosting at all. I like the ultimate a lot and would probably reccomend that for anyone that is doing LED...if not using LED it would be overkill.

There is actually a shelf towards the top where the light will be placed behind the marquee. For this one the Lexan overlay for the monitor and the Marquee is one continuous piece for the sleek finish my friend is looking for. We scored 3/16" thick lexan for free and couldn't pass it up. Although I think I may prefer the bronze look my original has but unfortunately I think it was too small to cannibalize here. I'm debating using it as a backing behind the clear lexan in the monitor cut out area after I paint the back of the lexan around the monitor viewing area.

Re: Super Hero City

Not to derail your thread completely but
Please post pics when you finish! The bezel is the last major thing I still need to do but have hit a bump because my monitor runs very close to flush with the edge of the mdf. I've been pondering using a thin sheet of black Pvc with the screen hole cut out. I can heat up the pvc and bend it backwards slightly to rest right behind the t-molding. Where do you place your speakers?

4:3 LCD monitor usually. My friend hasn't decided what size as he's still looking. I left that up to him to find. He has a hard time with decisions...it took him two weeks to pick out the black color and three for the Blue accent.

No problem...it's my thread so I can essentially talk about what ever I want I think...

the original one was tucked up at the top with the light and aimed down. The new models are right below the monitor and above the control panel. there is a MDF strip that goes there and I need to drill and route out the speaker lines in the front and put the pocket in the back. Mine will be easier as I have square set of speakers but he gave me some odd shaped pc speakers and I'm still trying to figure it out.

I will defiantly post pics.

If you scroll to the bottom of my first post you can see a picture of the bronze plexi over the monitor. I used poster board to frame the monitor. I planned on getting a piece of black poster board and redoing it but never did. The picture is brighter than it actually looks. It's pretty dark until the monitor comes on.

Re: Super Hero City

It doesnt look like you'll need or use them for this project but for future builds, which you know you'll do, heres an idea. Speaker grill covers. I used computer fan covers I snagged up from work. Painted them green to match the black and green color theme I have. Pulled this off a google search, I used the one top right but if I had the option, some of the other ones look way cooler
Spoiler Alert!

They're pretty cheap if you had to pick up a couple.

Great idea...I may do this anyway now. I haven't started on the speakers yet.

Re: Super Hero City

Arcade update...I set it up at my friends house this past weekend. He still hasn't decided on a marquee yet so I installed a blank one.

My son's new one has multicolored LED's and I'm still working out the software bugs but here is his Control panel...

We were setting up a SNES mode and deciding on traditional purple or the Famicom multi colored. We settled on the Purple as it looked really clean with the front end I created.

Re: Super Hero City

It's much thinner than they used to be.

Re: Super Hero City

Thanks. That one wasn't too bad since it is one color LEDs...this one is turning into quite a chore with the 3 color lights and the programming.

It has a footprint of about 26" wide and 20" deep at the base.

Re: Super Hero City

Wow. That is awesome! I want one.

Re: Super Hero City

You know what would be cool would be an electronic marquee that can change to match the game. They most likely do not exist in a size to match but that would be quite impressive.

I may bug you about that button software if I ever get back into building, which you are inspiring me to do. I still want to make a driving console.

They do make extra wide LCDs that I have seen people use online but those LCDs are more expensive than this entire cabinet.
