Sherman's Lord of the Rings customs - Kola Kongi & Kelvin Jax

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 6/17

I really like the Orc Warriors. I suppose you don't have the other figures for this squad? I really like first strike. People might try to argue that the wording of this power means that you get that ability if you draft Blade Gruts or Heavy Gruts as well since they are also Orc Warriors. Maybe you should change their name to 'Orc Warriors of...' for instance so that the wording in the power can be more specific.

Good point. I originally wanted a more specific name and played around with Mordor Spears or Orc Spears, but they sounded too much like an individual's name to me, possibly because of Britney Spears (curse you!). Now I'm thinking I might rename the squad Mordor Orcs.

As for Lurtz's ability, it does have the potential to hit hard, but I was hoping the manuevering required to surround a target with orcs and the fact that it was a single shot against one target would help balance it out. As you said, playtesting will tell. I think if I end up making any change to it, it will simply be to lower the max bonus to +2 auto skulls.

My thoughts exactly.

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 6/17

What is the scale of these LOTR miniatures? Are they Scape sized or close to it? Your awesome cards have tempted me to go start collecting these figs too!

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 6/17

I've updated Frodo's card on the first page to reflect some input a friend of mine gave me recently when I showed him the card. He thought using the ring wasn't as risky as it should be. The One Ring power now destroys Frodo on a roll of 3 or less, which means the first time a player uses it a roll of 4 or less will destroy Frodo, since you subtract 1 from the roll for each time the power is used.

I also changed his Sting special power. Previously, it doubled skulls rolled in the same way that the Minions of Utgars' Deadly Strike did, but combined with the Ring ability and height it gave Frodo the potential to attack and get 8 skulls, which I thought was too much damage to expect from a minor magical dagger. Sting now adds an automatic skull when attacking followers of Utgar, making it dangerous to them but in a different way.

I've also been working on Frodo's friend and gardener, and the heart of the Lord of the Rings books, Samwise Gamgee:

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/4

I love the Sam card. Awesome- Hobbit Bonding is a great idea for him- I'm wondering if the bonding should make him worth more than 60 points, though. He's very similar to Shiori in both stats and points- except he gets bonding. Might be worthy of a slight bump?

And that sculpt is freakin' awesome. The frying pan!!

Yeah, I love the frying pan too. :)

As for Sam's cost, Shiori does have a couple things over Sam, though. She has a ranged special attack and is generally more mobile with her Phantom Walk and 1 extra move. Not to mention, she's thought by some to be a bit overcosted. Regardless, I haven't playtested Sam yet (or any of my LotR customs) so you may end up being right.

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/4

Mmm, you're right about the ranged special attack- I forgot about that. That puts it a bit further towards balanced, you may be right. Great card, anyway. I'm getting a fellowship set (the Games Workshop ones, though) somewhat soon, and I plan on testing all of these for you fairly well at that time. ;)

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/4

You might want to specify somehow that Samwise can't use his Hobbit bonding to bond with himself. Otherwise a sneaky player could make a legit claim that he could just keep taking turns with Samwise from here to eternity.

Thanks, Bats. I'll fix him tonight after work.

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/4

I don't understand...

Why didn't you include the "Stare Gayly into Frodo's Eyes for Two Hours of the Film Trilogy" ability on that card? Gosh!

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/4

There's also the "Cry a Lot While The Same Sad Music Plays for the Last Film and a Half" Special Attack. :p

Very funny, guys. What, are you so manly you're bothered by a little bromance? ;)

Okay, I fixed the power to say "take a turn with any other Hobbit you control."

I don't mind it - but the word "little" doesn't begin to describe playing the saaaaame sappy music and having them cry in every scene for the last movie and a half. I really got sick of it about halfway through Return of the King.

Yep, I was thinking something like that. Nice fix.

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/4

Keep an eye out on Ebay. And call around to some local hobby spots. I picked up the whole Felowship minus the hobits. And a bunch of the orks and elves on the cheep.

try.

This guy has the starters and some loose minis. Want suliman need all minis.
gots no money arrrrggggg. He seems to have a bunch and if you can combine the shiping you could get quite the colection going. Also, If you get a couple of the starters you can mod out the other hobbits and make some generic rangers, but don't underestimate the map.

It is a hex based map that will work for Scape. I know the terain is great but there are times you just want to show some people the game. I have set up one nice map to show off the tiles and started out the trainies on the paper maps. Also, they have some files of indoor maps for the game wich adds a twist.

Dang the prices went up The only problem is the Games workcsop minis are way to small to work with them.

One little request please don't limit yourself to the minis you have. Do the whole feloship and the other mins for those who have them or want to use a stand in.

Is it mean that I laughed at his "Pincushion" ability?

How about I meet you halfway? I'll do customs for the minis I don't have yet, but fully intend on acquiring soon. As for customs for the rest of the game's figures, I may work on that in the future for those members here who have those figures.

Here's my own take on the Boromir mini I'm looking to buy:

Boromir.jpg

Mossman, thanks for posting your own Boromir custom. It convinced me to change his class from Warrior to Soldier, in order to give him some synergy with Vanillascape.

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/7

Nice job! I actually prefer that last Boromir as opposed to Mossman's.

However, you may want to be more specific with the "Horn of Gondor" ability. Like, say that you can move two units that you control up to 4 spaces each, or can move them their normal move listed on their card.

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/7

I like that his wounds impact his D20 rolls. Nice touch.

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/7

Hi, this is my first post and i don't know much about custom units, but i think these guys are awesome.

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/7

Some people obviously don't understand what IP addresses are ...

Re: Sherman Davies' Lord of the Rings customs - update 7/7

Boy, this guy really can't take a hint, can he? You can tell they're the same pereson because:
a) they say that they don't know much about something.
b) they suck up and try and pretend to be good members.
c) the most important: They are soon banned.

Hmm... interesting point. I tried to word the power to be a clear case of "do what the card says, not what it doesn't." To me, if the power says to "move 2 figures you control," then it's implicit that those figures move their normal move, as if they were taking a turn.

What does everyone else think?
