Sheffield Lake Tourney Report 2

The Guy That Thinks Runa is Good (and has actually
Another tournament in Sheffield Lake, OH put on by southwest ninja and his wife. Again, a great hosting by them! They had eveything ready with a bunch of food and an all around good time.

We had 6 players going up for this tourney, and 18 total. I thought about playing some very strong armies (one of which was played by my friend Craig, who took 2nd place). I should've known better that I couldn't play an army like that, and I needed to have a crazy figure in there. So, I settled on this:

Major Q10 - 150
Sudema - 140
Raelin - 80
Marro Warriors - 50
Deathreavers x2 - 80

Total = 500

I had map control, good defense, heroes that excel against squads and heroes (respectively), all special attacks and powers and Raelin. Now, if I can only have a hot day on the D20...

Round 1 - Caleb (Major Q9, Cyprien, Sonya, Krav Maga, Marcu) on a custom map that looked somewhat like Mole Hills

I wasn't really worried about Q9 or the Krav - as long as I could buy Sudema some time, she should be able to get Q9 and even a couple of agents. However, going in I knew Cyprien would give my army some problems with Raelin, Sudema and the Marros all susceptible to Chilling Touch, and he can disengage. I got my reavers out early and claimed both glyphs - Intercept Order and Initiative. I took a marker off of Q9. Raelin and Sudema followed, and soon all of the Krav were statues. Caleb split his markers between Q9 and Cyprien, and Sudema started trying to make Q9 a statue when Cyprien Chilled her for 3 wounds and attacked right through Raelin's aura and killed her. Raelin went down quickly to the Queglix gun and Chilling Touch, and Q10 decided he just wasn't going to roll any shields. He was quickly slaughtered without even wounding Q9, along with the rats and the Marros. A tough first game for me, but if I'd gotten Q9 with Sudema, I could've had it.

0-1, 250 losing points for me.

Round 2 - Craig (Kaemon Awa, Raelin, Marro Stingers x5) on Highways and Dieways

Craig lost his first match to Raudaulfr Shieldcrusher (the eventual 5-0 winner) and drew me next. I decided to send Q10 out first to deal with Stingers, but in hindsight, I should've sent Sudema to bypass Raelin's aura. I held the Move and Defense glyphs most of the game with Rats, and did a good job tying down Stingers for a long time while a Raelin boosted Q10 took them down. I made a couple critical mistakes though trying to position Q10 to get strong attacks and fell out of Raelin's aura. Even though I was throwing 6-7 dice with the glyph and height, again the dice failed me, and Q10 was eventually felled. However, I had killed Raelin and a lot of Stingers. Unfortunately, Kaemon Awa was faster on the road than Sudema in my starting zone, and I missed two stone rolls on him and was shot down. My Marros and Rats dispatched a couple more Stingers, but soon they were dead as well. 5 Stingers were all Craig had left standing. If I had sent Sudema behind the rats first, I might have been able to make a couple of Stinger statues and turned the game. Craig wouldn't lose again all day.

0-2, 650 losing points total.

Round 3, Sarah (Braxas, Raelin, Drake v1, Iskra, Rechets) on Marr Highway

I'd never played on this map, but thought it fared well for my army. I advanced the rats and clogged up the middle of the map, taking both glyphs (Unique Attack and maybe Defense?). I followed with the Immune-to-Acid Q10. I stayed back with Raelin and Q10 and shot Braxas from afar while she melted rats (Sarah probably missed 5 rats with Acid - she had a tough dice game). Braxas was torn down very quickly and killed. Iskra summoned the Rechets, who didn't do much right away, but would eventually sting Raelin. However, the rats and Q10 were too much. The rats ran interference while Q10 killed everything. Sudema didn't even move, but she would have her time.

1-2, 650 losing points

Round 4 - Andrew (Su-Bak-Na, Krug, Ornak, Marro Stingers x2) on Hot Heights

On this very large map, I put all three turns on my Rats in the first round. I took the Attack +1 glyph on my side, and SBN took the Unique Attack Glyph on his side. However, my Rats smelled blood. With the Attack glyph and height on the 3 defense SBN, they went on the offensive. SBN couldn't roll a shield to save his life, and the 160 point dragon fell to 4 stinking rats. And they weren't done - they also killed four Marro Stingers in his starting zone. After the Rat Onslaught, I followed with Raelin and Q10 and Sudema, splitting up markers. Krug came in, attacking with his two dice, but Raelin was protecting everyone. I ignored Krug altogether while making two Stinger statues. Krug kept disengaging, but I was patient and never swung at him. Once the Stingers were dead, Sudema turned her stare on the huge Beast himself, and made a Krug statue on her third roll. Q10 ran up and finished off Ornak in another game where the dice really fell my way.

2-2, 650 losing points

Round 5 - Michael Jerome (Charos, Q9, Raelin, Marcu) on Ember Canyon Road

Michael was 12 years old, and a good player. However, this was a good map for me and he made an early rookie mistake. He flew Charos into the canyon to deal with my rat on the initiative glyph, but I just kept scattering more there. He had Raelin backing Charos up, but that didn't bother my undead Queen at all. I latched 3 or 4 rats onto Charos and started staring at him. In 2 or 3 rolls, Charos was a statue in the middle of the canyon. Raelin, seeking revenge, flew straight over the canyon and viciously attacked Sudema, killing her even though she was throwing 5 defense dice. My Q10 took out his Raelin, and ascended the canyon, waiting for Q9. I latched some rats to him, who survived his Queglix very well, and Q10, with height, took him down. Marcu made a last ditch effort, scoring a wound or two on Raelin before he took too many Wrist Rockets too the head. Had he either 1) flown Marcu out early to take the glyph or 2) Disengaged Charos early and came into my starting zone, he would've been much better off. Still though, he played very well.

Final record, 3-2, 650 losing points for a 7th place finish out of 18 (Shieldcrusher won, going 5-0 with a Q10/Stingers army). Also, honorable mention to Mechabeast, who went 4-1 (3rd place) with Krav, Raelin, Marcu and Zombies x5. His only loss was on Arctic Divide, which was being played with heavy snow and slippery ice (and he still made it a close game). The zombies are just way too slow in that arctic climate.

I thought 7th place was a decent finish for a Sudema army, and had I played a little better, I think I could've won one of the first 2 games. I knew Cyprien would give me problems, since I really didn't have the raw firepower to take him down quickly, and that proved true in game one. However, I had three Stare rolls at Q9 before Sudema went down, I guess I can't expect much better than that. I took home a Warriors and Soulborgs pack for my efforts, which I needed to get some additional Ashra. Thanks again to everyone who came and made the tournament so much fun!

killer,

It was nice to meet you and your crew! Everyone was really nice and loads of fun to play.

Question, did you happen to talk to Michael after the game you played with him? I wanted to mention to anyone playing against the 12 year olds to give them tip on how to play better, but I forgot.

BTW nice battle report. There is no way I could remember all my matches without taking notes immediately after each match.

No, I didn't talk to him, though I probably should've. He was a little ticked about having a 210 point dragon turned into a statue.... but by all means show him this thread and the advice I should've given him after the game. It's tough for new players to grasp the concept of ignoring those pesky little 10-point rats. Hopefully there will be another event we can all attend together soon!

And pti8888888, I do love all of the neglected figures, but Runa holds a soft spot in my heart that of which no undead queen could could take the place.

At least it's visually appealing. I don't know about you, but I want a Krug statue in my house.

What prize did you get? ;) I don't really care, but I was just wondering. Oh, yes, I remember now. Where, sir, did you learn how to write so well, KillerCactus?

RotV master set. Plus southwest ninja gave me two sleeves of additional master set figures so I can harvest bases for custom figures.

I agree, Killer's report is well written.

Great report. I honestly can't believe Sudema did so well.

BTW, you're Minions and Runa team makes me want to play:

Minions x2 - 220
Taelord - 180
AE - 110
Isamu - 10

520 pts. I'm not trying to hijack the thread or anything, just letting you know that your team with crappy Runa was the inspiration behind it.

Well written? I guess all that money I paid to college actually did mean something.... thanks!

Kaemon, that army you have down there has potential, but I really feel Runa is better in it than Taelord (my weird obsession with Runa aside). The reasoning behind it is that with Taelord, you HAVE TO give him some turns to keep him up with the Minions, even if giving Taelord a turn isn't the best option. When I play Runa, I know that, most of the time, giving Runa a turn isn't my best option. However, there are some times where I need her extra 2 move, or need her to tie up a hero, or I can get 2-3 heroes in range of her aura. Though, most of the time I just use the Minions and the "threat" of Runa is good enough.

However, with how my army performed at the tournament, having Taelord instead of Runa probably wouldn't have made any difference in the outcome for me. And, I can see him helping the AE in that build even moreso than the minions if he does get left behind. I've played Taelord, Minions x2, Krav at 500 points before and done very well with it, just watch out for Braxas!

EDIT: As for Sudema, I think of each one of her Stare rolls as an attack that causes one wound. It almost always kills a squad figure, and (on average) it takes 5 rolls to kill a hero, which would work out to 5 life. Her worth really starts going up against the dragons (especially Charos and Braxas with all their life) and Q9, since she doesn't care about his 7 defense or Raelin's extra 2. She just needs a lot of protection so she has ample time to Stare.

Isn't Taelord a kyrie warrior same as Runa???
I'd agree that Runa is better but I just wanted to point that out.

Yes he is, so he gets the half-bonding thing, but I just mean you'll want to use more turns to keep him close to the minions than you'd normally use on Runa (probably, in the world of theoryscape).
