September 6th Western PA Tourney - Vipers

The Guy That Thinks Runa is Good (and has actually
Yesterday Tiberius held a tournament at the Gamemaster's Realm in PA. It was an excellent tournament and a fun time was had by all. Having never played a tournament here, I decided I'd "test the waters" and bring a fun, but probably not competitive army:

Krug - 120
Zetacron - 60
Venoc Warlord - 120
Venoc Vipers x5 - 200

Total = 500

I probably should've played Kaemon Awa instead of Krug. I was afraid of Q9, but I found that I really needed some more range and a better cleanup figure, even though I had a ton of speed.

Round 1 - soberman (Marcus, Sacred Band x2, 10th Foot x4) on some random small map

Recognizing I had no range, soberman started with his 10th to outrange me. I brought Zetacron out early for a shot, but should've left him back. Anyway, Zeta took out a soldier, and tied up some soldiers for a couple turns before dying. My Vipers really did their job in this match, frenzying and killing all of the 10th Foot. However, the flaw in my army construction showed through, and Mittens and Krug couldn't mop up the Band and Marcus before going down, thanks to their weak defense and lack of range. I think if I have Kaemon, I win this one, but soberman played a fantastic game. 0-1, 325 points.

Round 2 - Tiberius (Ulginesh, Jorhdawn, Chardris, Emirroon, Armker, Kyntela, Isamu) on an ice map.

I thought I had a decent matchup against the elves, as long as I could spread out my Vipers. I lost initiative (which was good) and Zetacron got a shot at Ulginesh, doing 3 wounds. Emirroon eventually summoned up all of the other wizards, and Chardris killed Zetacron, according to plan. I started flanking with the Vipers, using a couple to engage the Fire throwers, and sending 1-2 around the side. Jorhdawn had already blown a hole in my starting zone, but I still had 10-11 Vipers left. In round 3, I won initiative, and was able to make it around the back to Ulginesh with 2 Vipers, on high ground. They killed Ulginesh, and I had an entire free round. Add to that about 4 Frenzies, and all Tiberius had left after those 3 Vipers went nuts was Isamu. Craziness. 1-1, 325 points.

Round 3 - Brad (Nilfheim, Cyprien, Sonya, Stingers x2 on Sidewinder)

Sidewinder resembles Highways and Dieways quite a bit - a great map for Vipers. It also helped that I moved Zetacron 7 spaces, and shot at Nilfheim from height, doing 2 wounds turn 1. The stingers failed to kill Zetacron, and I got a second shot at Nilfheim, doing 4 more wounds and killing him. Zeta went down, but the Vipers charged up and engaged Stingers, killing a couple. An initiative switch killed the rest, and I was staring down Cyprien. The vampire flew in, but a couple of bad rolls from him and a couple Frenzies from he ended his life very quickly. Sonya took a tusk to the face, and I had a winning record. 2-1, 325 points

Round 4 - Royaldoy (Hive, Stingers x3, Drones x3, Isamu on a pretty big map)

Ehhh... I really didn't like this matchup from the get-go. The map was long - I couldn't get a shot at the Hive from high ground on my first turn, and the Vipers would have a tough time getting there. Zetacron did get one shot at the hive, and did 3 wounds. But, the Stingers took him down immediately. So, I just started sending Vipers, trying to bust through the squads and make it to the Hive. I killed a lot of Drones and Stingers, but the Hive was working overtime, churning out Marro like crazy. The new squaddies made it too tough for me to bust through, and I couldn't Frenzy to save my life. I got 190 points in the loss. 2-2, 515 points.

Round 5 - ReverendBayes (Silver Surfer, Rats x4, Isamu, Otonashi on the ice map again)

I sat down in Round 5 against a completely terrible matchup on a completely terrible map. I knew there was no way I would ever catch the Surfer through the heavy snow and ice unless he made a mistake. I brought out Zetacron to try and get some cheap wounds on him, but he hid the Surfer behind a glacier and killed Zeta. However, the Vipers caught him that turn, and were able to do 3 wounds thanks to very hot rolls for attack and Frenzy. Then something clicked for the Reverend I think - Rats were much better at killing Vipers than the Surfer was. The Surfer retreated, and the Rats came. I killed all one but three rats with my Vipers before they were dead - not good. Mittens came charging out, looking for an initiative switch to catch the Surfer. He got it, but Reverend positioned his Surfer so that Mittens couldn't even reach in two turns, thanks to heavy snow and ice. He was then incinerated, and out came Krug. I figured he would just get torn up quickly, but the Reverend miscalculated one turn, and left the Surfer within 5 spaces of Krug, and used Cosmic Force Blast. I was praying for a lot of skulls, but he only rolled 3. Krug blocked one, and I got 2 attacks of 4 at the Surfer, both of which were unsuccessful. Krug would never catch the Surfer again. I did way better than I thought I could, but the bottom line is I rolled like a god the whole game, played as well as I think I could've, and still lost. Nothing I could really do... 2-3, 860 points.

I was hoping to go at least 3-2, but I had a couple of touch matchups near the end. It was still a great time, and Craig represented Youngstown with a 5-0 performance. Thanks for Tiberius and the Gamemaster's Realm for putting on a great tourney! Next time, though, I'll mean business. ;)

Yeah! I have to give my props to Vydar range! If it were not for some great rolls, the Surfer would have had me. But hey, I will take it! 5-0 Baby. Thanks to Tiberius for putting on a great tournament!:D
