Online 'Scape Inaugural Season - Congrats to Kinseth

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

The problem with "play to place", 4-round brackets like that is that if you lose in the first round, you can't finish any higher than 9th, even if the person you lose to goes 4-0. In a Swiss format, your opponent's 4-0 record improves your strength of schedule, so if someone goes 3-1 after losing in the first round to the person who wins, they should finish up in the top 4.

I see your point. I will counter with a big "who cares?"

Because it keeps the rankings past the top 4 or so accurate. Even if people don't win the whole thing they want to know where they placed.
@Benji - I agree that the "play-to-place" schedule is pretty much fine for a 16 player event. The "places" it comes up with are not very accurate, though. I suppose it's fine as long as we re-sort by record and SoS at the end.

@bamoguy - if you're just randomly assigning matchups within record each round, you can't claim any improved accuracy over the schedule Benji is suggesting.

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

16 players is perfect for 4 rounds of swiss and at the end there will be exactly 1 undefeated left. The champ. That 4th round game is the finals.

That doesnt always mean the two best players are teamed up at the end, you could have dok and someone else paired up round 2 and in the end that is the best match, but that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes.

So why can't we just have 4 rounds and eliminate the finals and semifinals (the only reason I had those was because it adds a little fun, and I was going to look into the possibilty of having those be broadcasted live or something, but that's fine). I could announce the pairings ahead of time with the maps like people seem to want and just have a date for when each round is due by, so people could do their 4 games in two weeks or go the full time if need be. I wasn't trying to be challenging and create a new system for running tournaments, I was trying to find the simplest and fairest way while still having the fun of semifinals and finals, but I understand what people have been saying. In the future I'll know the best way to run these.

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

Sounds good, let's run with it.

Awesome! Thanks for the input everyone! Definitely a bit of a learning curve to running your first tournament :p

Right now I am going to double check, make sure I have everyone's army, and once I post the starting date for round one as well as the pairings and maps, I'll post the armies.

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

Still missing armies from Charr21 and Robber.
Please send me those as soon as possible. Thank you.

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

You may want to PM those guys also, given we are on post page #14, they may not see this.

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

Well it's ever so convinient that Charr21 goes to my school, but i'll send Robber a PM now. Thanks Kinseth!

What it really comes down to is that the guy running the tournament gets to do it however he wants. Everything else is just a suggestion. For me, I just think it will be fun to play a couple of games of 'scape with you guys, in any format.

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

I haven't played scape in over a year, I don't have anyone to really play with. So it will be fun just getting to play!

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

Pairings for all four rounds will be posted Monday, December 19th.
For simplicity, you could just use Benji's bracket. Just assign a letter (a through p) to each player, and assign a map to each game number (1 through 32).

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

Yeah Why not just post the Pairings and Armies today? What are we waiting for?

EDIT: Can you tell im anxious to play :)

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

I would also appreciate the extra playing time for Round 1, if it is possible to post the matchups. Otherwise, Holiday travel might mean that I am playing Game 1 with the HeroSkype app, a printed map, and thumbtacks. :)

Re: Heroscape's Very First ONLINE Tournament!

Yeah, stretching the time windows for the first couple rounds to account for holiday travel would be nice.

Are you still waiting on those two armies? If so, I think it would be only fair to let Vegaslen in as an alternate if he gets an army to you first.

Again, all you need to do is post a list of names with the letters, and maps with glyphs. For example, this would work:

Players:
  • AwesomeJ-AD2011
  • Bengi
  • Charr21
  • Dok
  • Fi Skirata
  • Filthy The Clown
  • Garenex
  • Izner
  • Kinseth
  • Lefton4ya
  • Megapower999
  • Ninja Status
  • Robber
  • Sixthflagbearer
  • Son of Arathorn
  • The CEE
Maps:
  1. Badru Valley
  2. Sidewinder Lodin Wannok
  3. Stygian Rift Wannok Valda
  4. Fulcrum
  5. Concrete Jungle Valda Dagmar
  6. Badru Valley
  7. Sidewinder Dagmar Kelda
  8. Stygian Rift Kelda Lodin
  9. Fulcrum
  10. Concrete Jungle Lodin Valda
  11. Badru Valley
  12. Sidewinder Wannok Dagmar
  13. Stygian Rift Valda Kelda
  14. Fulcrum
  15. Concrete Jungle Dagmar Lodin
  16. Badru Valley
  17. Sidewinder Kelda Wannok
  18. Stygian Rift Lodin Valda
  19. Fulcrum
  20. Concrete Jungle Wannok Dagmar
  21. Badru Valley
  22. Sidewinder Valda Kelda
  23. Stygian Rift Dagmar Lodin
  24. Fulcrum
  25. Concrete Jungle Kelda Wannok
  26. Badru Valley
  27. Sidewinder Lodin Dagmar
  28. Stygian Rift Wannok Kelda
  29. Fulcrum
  30. Concrete Jungle Valda Lodin
  31. Badru Valley
  32. Sidewinder Dagmar Wannok
Oviously, those aren't random - I alphebatized the players, and just looped the maps and glyphs (I tweaked the loop in a methodical way for the second random glyph to avoid always pairing the same two).

Once you post something like this, we can just look at Benji's brackets and everything explains itself.

I was waiting a few days because I've been busy, but I will try to get it up tonight.

Okay, What if both Round One and Two were due at the date Round Two was due? So the first two rounds would have two weeks to complete both games?

Thanks Dok! This is similar to what I was going to do. I was essentially just going to put:

Round One
Scaper123 vs. ScaperABC - Map - Glyphs
Scaper456 vs. ScaperDEF - Map1 - Glyphs

Round Two
Ect...
Wouldn't that be easier?

No, because who plays in round 2 depends on who wins in round 1. That's why Benji's brackets work so well - it explains who goes to which games each round, so you're always playing someone who has had the same sequence of wins and losses that you have.

If you just assign each player a letter from a to p, and assign a map (and glyphs for the three maps that need them) for each game from 1 to 32, the brackets tell us the rest.

Right! Thanks Dok! All the feedback really has been helpful! I'll try to get that up tonight.
