OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - Congrats KEVINDOLA!

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R1 thru 05/02/20

My Raelin backed 10th pretty much rolled through Brak's Deathwings. It was a tough matchup for him, and right off the bat my dice were clearly better and I was able to take out a few DWs with 2/2 skulls and 1/6 shields. Arktos was able to charge in and get 3 early wounds on Raelin, but immediately after was tied up by the 10th and couldn't do much else. DWs kinda zipped around and plinked away at the 10th but I was able to space out well enough and engage and bayonet to prevent any explosions. Van Nessing came out at the end and toook out a couple 10th and put one more wound on Raelin before falling. The last DW suicided himself to kill a 10th and end the game. Props to Brak for bringing such a cool/cheeseless army and doing as well as he did. Upset City Baby!

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R1 thru 05/02/20

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, the well spaced out tens, plus with their melee boosting abilities made it so hard to find any bombings worth taking, especially being out numbered and out ranged. I mainly came for fun, and the Extra Turner and Hooch pun was too good not to use them. I'm glad I don't play like a total noob.... maybe just a partial one lol.

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - Signups through 4

You can view the bracket on Challonge HERE.

We decided to push the byes to round 2 to get people playing as quickly as possible. Two of the second round bye recipients face off so they will actually just jump to round 3.

My computer might be slow but this racket might need updating.

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R1 thru 05/02/20

Dysole & I are starting @ 5:30 pm EST today

FYI

Apparently huddle in the start zone is a valid strategy to beat knights with. Alastair didn't do much and I was able to keep plinking off knights. Good game Chris Perkins.

~Dysole, destroying more brackets including her own

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R1 thru 05/02/20

We're starting now.

EDIT:
Well that was a tough one most of the way through, but Nilf was doing Nilf stuff and some careful placement and positioning kept Nilf from avoiding ever being engaged or taking any wounds from attacks. That said, Shiftrex was able to get 4 wounds on Raelin in one turn early on, which got me really worried, but I was able to clear his frontline the next turn to give me some breathing room. He still had plenty left to fight back, but after that, it was all about kiting back and forth and Nilf was quite efficient at keeping limited attacks from getting in. Greenies and even MW's pulled their weight through this one.

Great game, you had me sweating there for a bit.

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R1 thru 05/02/20

Just wanted to say that Bodacious Blood and I had a great game in the Consolation round.
I started out strong by taking out a squad of Dwarves with Omegatron, aided by the Repulsors' "Targeting Beacon". Then Blood brought Braxas out to play, but missed on 2 Acid Breath Attacks killing only one Repulsor. This left him Vulnerable to Omegatron after 4 hits and 1 hit for lava damage, Braxas was down to 3 lifes. Next round he came straight at Omega from high ground, but only hit for 1 skull out of 6 dice . The following round I upgraded Zetacron and pulled him out only for Braxas to fall first turn to Omega. Then Zeta whiffed on a 4 attack and fell to a Dwarf with high ground. Omega started targeting the Dwarves but there were to many as he ended up surrounded. Blood won the initiative and took out Omegatron along with 2 order markers. Heroscape was now SquadScape. After the melee settled, (only for a moment) the final battle fell to me with 7 Repulsors, Isamu and Beorn vs Blood's 5 Dwarves and Isamu. I lost a couple Repulsors to Dwarves and another to Lava. I started to think I was done after Blood rushed a Dwarf into my pack of Repulsors, However I was able to gain high ground from range and take out all but one. Blood lost him to Lava. Then I lost my last 2 Repulsors to lava trying to gain high ground on Isamu.
In the end it was Isamu vs Beorn with 3 lives atop the high center slugging it out.
Beorn for the win! Great game! Thanks again to Bodacious Blood for a truly enjoyable battle. Great Fight!

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R1 thru 05/02/20

Advanced to the next round in a back and forth Cathar mirror with Tiamat. I had four squads of Cathar and Marutuk, while he had two squads of Cathar, Vulcanmech Incendiborgs, Raelin, and Count Raymond. I opened with a Marutuk rush that caught him off guard, and started smashing Vulcanmechs. My Dragonspawn rolled a ton of skulls, but Redundant Systems doesn't care how many skulls you roll. Marutuk struck true on every single one of his five attacks on Vulcanmechs, and forced another to die to lava, and that was enough to trade the Vulcanmechs evenly for Marutuk. (Actually slightly less than evenly, as the Vulcanmechs killed an advanced Cathar who I feinted with on my first OM). Marutuk died on Tiamat's first order marker of round 3, and then the two of us switched to Cathar.

I was pretty happy with that trade and feeling good about my chances. But I quickly soured on that once Raelin Raymond Cathar vs. normal Cathar began. Tiamat put Raelin in a great spot where I had almost no route to get to her, and Raelin plus shadow backed Cathar were brutal for my Cathar to get through. Before I had even killed a single Cathar Tiamat had killed maybe five of mine. I maybe should have played more patiently in the early phase of this battle, but once I went in I had to keep pushing and it just was not working. But things eventually started to tip in my favor. I got some fortunate lava rolls and some clutch kills on a pair of Cathar that left Raelin's aura. Eventually I pushed Tiamat's Cathar down below four and then the scales tipped back in my favor. I still had six Cathar left at this point, against Tiamat's 3 Cathar and 2 heroes, which doesn't sound like a huge numbers edge, but I was able to define where the battle happened because I still had four attacks per turn left. I was now able to threaten Raelin, throw some height attacks down into Tiamat's startzone on Raymond, and push to a win with four Cathar remaining.

The quarterfinals are almost entirely set now, just waiting on tomorrow morning's kevindola vs. GoldStarmie game.

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R1 thru 05/02/20

@heywhatscookin tried fro revenge from a couple weeks ago as he had Blast/Glads both games (this time he had more squads and Raelin) and I had another melee army (Knights + KMA instead of Dwarves). He put is Raelin on shadow but too close to the middle where my overextended Eldgrim could reach and put a couple wounds on and my KMA could finish off. I was then maybe too aggressive with my slow moving knights, as I did get Minights to the middle and did trade points evenly for the first 1/2 of the game where I all but finished off his Gladiatrons. But then my Knights in the middle died, and my reinforcements were all the way by my start zone and it was an uphill battle (literally) where his Blasts would get height on lava turn 1 and 2, then (mostly) jump off turn 3. In the ends it came down to about 2 squads of Blasts versus a few knights (Isamu) and two Super-KMA but then I lost a KMA to a lava roll and lost initiative and was pretty much over, with not even Isamu able to pull off an attack. So @heywhatscookin got his sweet comeback if only in a consolation game.

Anyway thanks for organizing. I do not think I want another consolation game against all these mass Ranged armies. Maybe more experienced players could win with my army but not me I guess - I tried but next tourney/events I will go with B&B/splash type armies.

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R1 thru 05/02/20

Just wanted to mention what a great match Veggie and I had last night. Raelin-backed, Raymond-boosted Cathar are no joke, and they defended like crazy for me. It's definitely a cheesey combo. But even that couldn't save me from Veggie's superior play throughout. Things ended fittingly when a 2-life Raelin had little choice but to bravely fling herself headlong into 3 braced spears. She ended up getting skewered to death in one of those beautiful moments that it feels like Heroscape delivers unlike any other game.

I also wanted to mention how patient Veggie was with some troubles that I had early on related to the online format. I have played a lot of Heroscape IRL, but I'm still new to playing online. He took everythig in (long) stride and helped me to get settled in. It was a perfect example of the great community that we scapers are lucky to have.

Finally, It's a relief to know that the great Cathar civil war which took place in our end of the bracket is finally over. Good luck to Veggie as he carries the Cathar flag into round 3!

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R1 thru 05/02/20

Rough opening for Gold Starmie in our game. The Marro Warriors killed 10 axegrinders before I placed an order marker somewhere else.

That really put Gold in a big hole. Mok Yolo'd through spiders to kill Raelin, but the damage had been done.

Starmie conceded with 3 axegrinders and a 2 life Mok against Quahon, Marcu, 2 Marros, and 7 spiders

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R3 thru 05/08/20

Sir Heroscape was able to vanquish the dragonspawn with Nilfheim and the Greenscales. He opened with Marro Warriors and established a good presence on the board with them, killing a couple Cathar, and then switched over to Greenscales. I slowly advanced Marutuk and Cathar, but once Nilfheim got close I went over to straight Marutuk, which may have been a mistake. Round 3 I started out trying to get to Nilfheim, with a route there if I won init, but once I didn't Marutuk was just stifled with no route anywhere. She took 2 wounds from Icy Shard so I just threw a Dismissive Swipe at a Marro Warrior and burnt Kelda. She climbed back into the fray in subsequent turns, and kept hitting her dismissive swipes, but she could not get any attacks. Nilfheim danced all over the board, sometimes out of Raelin's aura but mostly staying in, and as he escaped the Dragonspawn he blasted through the Cathar. I feel I lost maybe a little more Cathar than average, but prolonging the game was certainly in Sir H's interest and he did a great job with it. Marutuk kept me in it by hitting her first 5 dismissive swipes, but she failed a crucial 6th that would have let her swing even ground to Nilfheim. Eventually the Greenscales ran out and I got to swing up at Nilfheim, for a 6/8 skull blow that was met with 3/5 shields and an about average 3 wounds from the play. I needed her to hang on through the Nilfheim 7v4 and the Greenscale hits for one more turn and one more swing, but she died to the final Greenscale attack. I only had 4 Cathar left. I made a hail mary move of throwing a Cathar into engagement with a Greenscale to try to kill Nilfheim by freeing him up, and I got the kill on the Greenscale and rolled 3 skulls, but Nilfheim hung on with 1/5 shields and cleaned out the Cathar.

It was a great game and Sir H played it really well. I do wish that I had taken Heracles instead of Marutuk after my last two games, and really my first as well. He just has a lot more versatility. Not being able to attack small or medium figures if there's a large or huge nearby is a huge handicap.

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R3 thru 05/08/20

WOW! What. A. GAME.

That was easily one of the best games of heroscape I've ever played...in a long time. And I don't just mean I feel like I played it well, Vegi was incredible as well. We were both on point tonight and it came down to the wire!

Vegi started out with Marutuk jumping up onto that back hex, just flaunting the dragon skull, biding her time for activation while I ran out early with MW's to try and either get early wounds on Marutuk if she charged or Cathar if they slow rolled. Cathar slow rolled, but LOS blockers made it tough to get a view so I only got off a couple shots, but was able to take out 1 Cathar so that was nice. The next round MW's activated again and were able to get another kill on Cathar after being a little more aggressive, but then they speared back and killed 1. I still went MW's who knocked off a couple more cathar in the process...after which Marutuk finished her taunting and came up to Vegi's side 7-hexer just to play with my mind. And play he did. Over the course of the next round or two he switched back and forth between Cathar and Marutuk, forcing me to have to position myself with Greenies and Nilf to always deny Marutuk an engagement. it was tough, but meticulous placement allowed me to force Marutuk to keep dancing around the edges of my screen Swiping away loyal warrior after warrior. I think she was 6 or 7 out of 8 swipes in the whole game and it made it really tough to plan for when she kept swiping them away. While she danced, I was also able to dance around the map a bit with Nilf and shard Cathar slowly but surely...whittling them down in the hopes of an eventual kill on Marutuk and then cleaning up a few straggling Cathar. But I couldn't count my chickens just yet, I had to deal with the "God Slayer". Nearing the end of the game when I only had 3-4 Greenies left, I was in a precarious situation where even with Dagmar I lost initiative with Marutuk within striking distance...BUT she had to get the swipe. She was unable to and that allowed me to take a more optimal position with Nilf, and Attck with him and the greenies. Unfortunatey I didn't have enough left to completely deny the attack on Nilf...but i did force some disengagements. Then, Marutuk charged. She had 5 wounds on her, but with 8 attack on Nilf she could easily one-shot me. She rolled 6/8. I blocked 3/5 which was incredible. I got to then attack down on Marutuk, rolling 5/7 and she blocked 3/4! so she had 2 life left! i had to kill her or likely lose Nilf next turn. I swarmed with Greenies, all buffed by Nilf and one on height. She blocked the first 2 attacks, then the last attack came in with a 2/4 skulls...and Mara WHIFFED!!! She went down! But it wasn't over yet. I only had Nilf (half life), Raelin (full), 3 Greenies and 1 MW vs about 6 Cathar. Luckily he went all in on Marutuk, so I stole his last 2 OM's and knocked off a couple Cathar, but they weren't finished yet. I went on Dagmar, lost initiative again and he was able to get his Cathar out of the SZ and into position. I used OM 1 to fly Raelin mid-map to catchup, but then he was able to knock off a blocking Greenie and put 2 wounds on Nilf (who was on height and covered by raelin). So I had 1 life Nilf and 2 Greenies. Which, fortunately was just enough. I didn't take any more attacks as I was able to retreat and attack and position Greenies well enough to keep Cathar from reaching Nilf...but it was still tough.

It was an incredible game and felt great to win...but also masterful play by Vegi down to the very end. We kept dancing around each other, poking here and there before the final show down and I was able to just roll 1 skull more to take the kill on Marutuk.

Great game Vegi!

Re: OHS Special Event: Bring the VCheese - R3 thru 05/08/20

In a mildly helpful scheduling, vegie's dad and I are playing either tonight (5/7) or tomorrow night (5/8) starting between 7:30pm and 9:00pm central. Depending on if a toddler bed is delivered for assembly today.

I will edit this post with more clarity later.

EDIT: 8:00pm. Looking to maybe start at 8:15pm with a potential 30 minute break at 9pm
