OHS S58 Multi-Format CONGRATS KEVINDOLA

Took the L against Chris today.

I think I lost the draft: Chris started with Greyspears which forced me into Swiftfangs/Arktos. He then took Nakitas/MotH, to which I responded with Grubs/TKN. He got a few other things including Kozuke, and I got a few other things including a second squad of Grubs.

My thought for the game was to do an OM3/OM1 on Swiftfangs around the end of the first round, to potentially throw a lot of attack dice at anything anywhere. That meant OM1 and 2 on Grubs against Greyspears, which didn’t go super well: I lost initiative, and then 3 Grubs on turn 2 to 4 attacks from Greyspears. TKN got a kill on my turn 2 and I moved up two Grubs, hiding the last one in the corner of the ruin. That play worked nearly to perfection, as Chris advanced a Greyspear quite far forward to have LoS on that Grub. He missed one of his first attacks into Grubs so decided his 3rd attack would go onto a Swiftfang, now that he wasn’t going to swipe my last OM (I had X on Grubs, Chris ws confident it was my 3). That attack went through for another kill.

So having gotten the #1 recent rankings player to fall perfectly into my trap, it was time to execute: Arktos could attack (4v4) and I could get a Swiftfang attack on the forward Greyspear (3v3). Then with my OM1 I could be attacking his SZ.

Of course, I missed the 4v4 and the 3v3. And lost initiative. And then he got 3 Swiftfang kills in 3 attacks to knock out my first two order markers. With that perfect storm of 6 tossup events going against me, I pretty much had lost already.

The rest of the game went almost as poorly (TKN 1/4? in stomps), and I never really managed to fully neuter any of his threats.

Take notes class : luck like this is how you get that recent #1 ranking and hold onto it.

Class dismissed.

Yeah not sure about my draft but I didn't want to be stuck with DcoT with only 3 range MBS as bonder and that was the only way. I think hbing first pick really helped you a lot.

Also maybe should have went +Gage +Kate -Viceron -1brute but was worried you'd take Viceron yourself.

Viceron was my intended final pick so that's fair. I think I would've just gone all Brutes and finished off with M.A.R.S. in your spot but guess we'll find out when we play.

~Dysole, who thinks having Pel in her pool makes first pick a fascinating proposition because what you gain in flexibility you lose in having pick of the first squad and the tradeoff so far has seemed about even

I would just like to say that even though I finished this event with a 1-3 record, that does not mean that my draft pool was a failure. On the contrary, it accomplished both my aims of 1) drastically simplifying the drafting process and 2) guaranteeing that I would go into each game with a more or less even matchup. Unfortunately, despite going into rounds 1, 2, and 4 with a fairly even matchup (the round 3 game never got played), I lost each game due to a mixture of bad luck (round 2 and 4) and a misplay that cost me badly (round 1). I still stand by the draft pool that I chose to bring for this event; it's just one of those cases where the overall record doesn't reflect what happened on a game-by-game basis.

Foudzing and I finished up today. His opening round he opened with Raiders who did not get a charge, Viceron, and Eltahale while I went all Chasers. He set up all on the Wannok side and I moved a Chaser to Valda where he ended up staying for most of the game (he left briefly only to return one turn later) and charged the rest of my army forward killing two Raiders. Eltahale went to hit one of the Chasers with the SA and then I pointed out that clear sight was halved so no other Chasers could be hit. I then waited for a second and rolled to block the hit. Foudz told me he would've done something different and instead positioned himself for a normal attack. I let him have it and despite only rolling 1 skull the Chaser died. Pel then came forward and starting wailing on Eltahale and he stayed there until he died (I went to move him once and then remembered oh wait he doesn't get to move). We traded a lot of back and forth between Chasers, Brutes, and Raiders on the hill right outside his start zone.

When Pel fell, he had 3 Brutes left, a 2 life Eltahale, full life Viceron, and one Raider while I had 4 Chasers, 3 out of range of the Brutes and one next to Eltahale. One went to Wannok and killed the last Raider. Foudz won initiative and killed the Chaser on Wannok and the one next to Eltahale. MBS ran up the mountain thanks to Valda and failed the stare (I think I rolled for stare 3 times and got 2 4s and a 1) but still killed the Brute. My penultimate Chaser killed his penultimate Brute and then blocked the return blow. This allowed MBS to off Eltahale and the Chaser to kill the Brute stealing his OM 3. Calibrax moved forward although I could've placed him better because I forgot Valda for a second. In the last round I won initiative and put 3 wounds on Viceron between MBS and the Chaser. Viceron killed the Chaser to heal a wound but then Calibrax's follow up volley killed him.

~Dysole, who is surprised Olog a filler unit is the only thing yet to be drafted from her pool

Had a very fun game with thesparkleinyourwater. My Protectors started off pretty strong and were able to eliminate Guilty, James, a few Dreadguls, and put a few wounds on Mad Dog. They largely went down fairly quickly afterward to some solid Dreadgul attacks and a Shootout turn, so I switched over to Minions in an effort to clean up the remaining heroes and 'guls. Our two squads of Minions duked it out for a bit, and Atlaga tanked 2 Wannock wounds before Bolting the particularly stubborn final Minion on level 4 height. From there, one of my last two Samurai counterstruck sparkle's lone remaining 'gul, freeing him up to get a heighted attack on Clayton for the win. The game ended with 2 Tagawa Samurai, one Minion, and a 1-life Atlaga on my team.

Really tight and enjoyable game, and I'm very excited to have gone 3-1 for the first time in an online tournament.

I possibly missed something, but I looked back and this will be our 5th meeting in an OHS final (which includes VCheese and End of Year). Here's the list I found of multiple pairings in finals of those events (67 tournaments)

What I read: Dok is very good at losing finals.

Well it'd been 4 years since the last one but I dusted off a spot on the virtual trophy case for another OHS tournament win. It was almost an al Unique battle but dok couldn't help himself to spam commons.

Dok: Rygarn, Finn, Knights of Weston x1, Heirloom, Iskra, Rechets, Nakitas
kd: Frostclaws, Laglor, Thorgrim, Knaves, Fia, Troll

Round 1 - dok initiaitve
All Heirloom and Bears this round with some positioning and me with my 5 units to move taking much longer to decide locations. I considered rushing into the SZ when it was clear it was all Heirloom Round by dok, but Rygarn is such a deterrent to that when you can flex to Knights to answer. Heirloom moved in on a Turn 3 and put 1 hit on a Bear, putting him in a spot by the ruin where there were only 2 even ground attack options. I claim Unique Attack (huge glyph for this game) but Thorgrim and the 2 tired from running Bears do no damage.

Round 2 - kd intiative (switch)
Now boosted by Ulinavia I get 2 order markers of Bears/Thorgrim who kill Heirloom. Heirloom gets 1 attack but misses. I consolidate Bears Thorgrim on my OM3 still around the ruin by Unique. Dok flexes to Iskra on OM3 after a lost OM2 on Heirloom and succesfully summons the Rechets. They fly in and 1 claims Unique. The other 2 go in for attacks of 4 against Bears, but both attacks are blocked

Round 3 - kd initiative
Initiative's not going dok's way at all. Thorgrim/Bears kill 2 of the Rechets (not the one on glyph). That Rechet wounds a Bear before dying (2 wounded now). Rechets Flex to Iskra, but a Bear blocks that attack too. Last OMs are Nakitas and Laglor but Fog of War prevents any attacks

Round 4 - dok initiative
d1 - Iskra kills a wounded Bear
k1 - Thorgrim and Frostclaws claim Unique and put 3 hits on Iskra
d2 - Nakitas move again and a Nakita kills the unwounded Bear on Unique glyph
k2 - Thorgrim disengages from Iskra (miss) and surives an engagement strike to kill a Nakita. Iskra survives being mauled by Bears.
d3 - Nakitas kill the wounded Bear (1 Bear left)
k3 - Thorgrim takes an engagement strike wound (1), but the Nakita and Iskra block attacks

Fun exchange in this round. Iskra really was a pain in the butt with her location tying down bears. I also made a mistake not having Thorgrimm cover the Unique Attack Bear but may have died anyway. But timely Bear kills prevent them from running at the Nakitas who had to get close to fire. I didn't have my position for the last Bear and Thorgrim up on the level 3 on the side of the Ruin, bear engaged with Iskra, Thorgrim engaged with Nakita, other Nakita free.

Round 5 - dok initiative
Nakitas get 2 turns but go 1/10 on attacks to kill nothing My round is all Laglor. He engages a Nakita (miss ES), but is blocked. He kills her though when she disengages and then kills the last Nakita. He is then able to take replace that Nakitas spot which gives him the level 3 by the ruin but also adjacent to Thorgrim. Rygarn and Laglor exchange fire to end the round. Rygarn takes 1 wound, but teleports to the level 4.

Round 6 - kd initiative
I go all in on Knaves and after dok hit back to back teleports Bonny gets a 3 skull blast that he whiffs on to kill Rygarn. Rygarn does kill 2 Knaves first. I position Bonny and last 2 Knaves (claim unique attack glyph, 4th different figure to claim that glyph) and while being bearly alive(see what I did there) , the 5 attack Knave kills Iskra. Last OM sees Finn move forward and put 1 hit on Laglor as the knights mobilize.

At this point I am in a pretty heavy points advantage, but not in a great order marker simplicity advantage. dok is just down to Knights + Finn. I have 2 Knaves, Bonny, Thorgrimm (3), Laglor (5), 1 Frostclaw, and Troll back in the SZ. This looks and is pretty strong for me, but the knights are on the ruins where Thor/Laglor/Frostclaw are positioned making swarming by knights and order marker security for me an issue.

Round 7 - kd initiative
k1This felt like a strong initiative to win. I got a 6v4 from Bonny (2nd black powder used) and a 6v4 from a Knave, but both of those are blocked.
d1 Finn disengages (miss) to kill a Knave. 3 Knight attacks yield a 2nd wound on Laglor
k2 Bonny does kill a Knight 6v4 this time, Last Knave stays on Glyph
d2 dok's attacks blocked (Laglor rolling defenses of 4 and 5 against knights due to Thor + height)
k3 Bonny attack on Finn blocked
d3 Finn hits Bonny (1), Knights get 2 more on Laglor (4) and Kill the last Knave

definitely a good dok round as the full squad flexes some muscle. I killed 1 Knight that round, while dok gives out 5 wounds

matchup: 3 Knights, Finn (full) vs. Bonny (4), Thor (3), Frostclaw, Troll (full)

Round 8 - kd initaitive
k1 - big win for initiative for me. First OM on the Frostclaws. Thorgrim takes the Unique Glyph (5th and and final figure to do so) His attack blocked. Frostclaw swings down with 5 to kill the 2nd Knight though (the knight who had killed the glyph Knave)
d1 - Finn puts 2 hits on Bonny (3), but Laglor blocks 2 Knight attacks
k2 - Bonny uses her last Powder and her 6v4 puts 2 wounds on Finn
d2 - Finn leaves the battle with Bonny and kills Laglor. The freed up Knights kill the Last Frostclaw and put a 2nd wound on Thorgrim. *Yikes*
k3 - Bonny claims Wannok
d3 - Finn moves back towards Bonny, 2 Knights on height can't kill Thorgrim

Wannok: 3rd wound on Finn

Round 9 - kd initaitive
dok is running out of juice to be able to handle the Troll and may already be there. Regardless it takes 2 more rounds of attacks for the Knights to kill Thorgrim (spirit to Troll). Finn does get 1 wound on the Troll, but the Troll kills Finn (spirit +1 attack to dok's humble nature) with his 6v4 and Wannok kills 1 of the remaining 2 knights.

dok surrenders at that point with 1 remaining Knight on one side of the board vs. Bonny on Wannok and full health +1 def Troll on the other side.

fun final! gg dok

Frostclaws killed Heirloom and Rechets and put three wounds on Iskra before losing a model. I actually came back pretty well after that, but had to run a wounded Finn into a troll in a desperate play to take wannok. Kevin won with troll and wounded Fia.

I seriously considered taking Frostclaws first, or deferring and grabbing them assuming the likely Rygarn pick (which Kevin confirmed was his plan). In the fog format and with Ulaniva in play, they seemed like easily the strongest unit. But Rygarn flexibility gives you an advantage as the game goes on (and I did mount a bit of a comeback). It's a tough call.

In the end I felt that if I could take care of them with Heirloom and Iskra/Rechets I was in good shape. Obviously that didn't come close to happening.

What I read: Dok is very good at losing finals.
I am indeed our greatest finals loser... congrats to Kevin on another title!

Here's a breakdown of how often each figure was drafted in my games, with the parenthetical being how many times I was the one drafting it.

7x: Rygarn(6)
6x: Laglor(3), Nakitas(3)
4x: Krav(1), Nora(2), Skahen(2)
3x: Otonashi (2), Heirloom(2)
2x: Buccaneers, Cormin

It's interesting that Nakitas were more popular than Krav. Rygarn is pretty awesome in a draft format. Buccaneers were hurt badly by the 14 figure limit.
