Monday Night GoogleScape League

Question/suggestion: This being a weekly game on the same day, I assume various people will have to drop out each week.
My guess is that we will have lots of "XXX and I decided to play our game on Tuesday" and "we didn't get the whole game in; we're finishing up Wednesday" and the like. And that's fine. My read of this is that the point of calling it "Monday Night" is to:
  • Create a clear, up-front expectation that people get one game played per week, and that if you can't, you're going to be forfeiting and probably shouldn't play, and
  • Establish a baseline day to play, so that people can reschedule from there, as needed.
I suggest that instead of having matchups pre-set and therefore people win by forfeit without getting to play, I would rather re-do macthups so the most people can play each week.
I prefer getting the matchups posted in advance, so we have the maximum flexibility in scheduling. Heck, if I were going to be out of town for two weeks, I might try to get those games in early.

Bengi, please correct me if my assumptions about the league are wrong.

Exactly correct on both points. I want us to be *fluid here so that everyone has fun. Makeup games a week or so after are fine as well. We're trying something new here, so we will do our best to make a fun environment for everyone.

(*because flexible is too rigid :))

I don't have a lot of experience with RTW, so I will defer to you on this one. We will go with a midseason game and Semis game with the same army, followed by RTW for the Final.
So, if 525 is the total for the semis/finals, then we'll need to insert that into the linup around week 4. Bengi's current lineup:
  1. 500 points, Uncommon, w/ treasure glyphs
  2. 475 points, kill ‘em all, no glyphs
  3. 800 points, 12 start zone spaces.
  4. 450 point draft, B units or below.
  5. Heat of Battle
  6. 500 points, 5 Card Stud
  7. 510 points, full draft
I'd suggest splitting the pooled draft and "B" and below formats, and losing the 5 card stud and no-glyph formats (we can do no glyphs whenever, it doesn't have to be the only twist in a round). That makes it:
  1. 500 points, Uncommon, w/ treasure glyphs
  2. 450 point, B units and below
  3. 800 points, 12 start zone spaces, Marvel allowed.
  4. 525, kill 'em all
  5. 1000 point draft pools, pooled draft, 500 point game?
  6. Heat of Battle (points?)
  7. 510 points, full draft

It occurred to me that I lost Bengi's 475 point level in my proposed shuffle there, so it should probably find its way back in. Really, you should ignore all of my suggested point totals. I think of army builds immediately for any point total, so it's almost impossible for me to suggest a point total without already having a couple potential builds in mind.

One question on the "B units or below" game: would we use Jexik's rankings, or mine? Obviously, we'll use my rankings for the C3V/SoV figures themselves, since Jexik doesn't rank them. There's two remaining issues, though:
  • I bumped the Snipers and Repulsors to B+ based on Omegacron. Since Omegacron (also a B+) isn't legal, should the Snipers and Repulsors drop back to B and become legal for the event? (I vote yes.)
  • There's a few figures I've shifted around just based on my own feelings that have crossed the B/B+ divide. I moved Arrow Gruts, Swogs, Raelin (SotM), Thorgrim, and Shurrak up to B+, and I dropped Migol, Othkurik, and Torin down to B. Whose rankings should we use? (While I prefer my own of course, it probably makes sense to use Jexik's here.)

I second the notion of using Jexik's rankings for non-C3V/Sov, while using your rankings for the specific C3V/SoV units.

Hopefully, this tournament/league will help to merge the two entities together just a bit more.

I doubt this would work, but if nobody can so it and you guys end up waiting this long I should be able to participate from June to July. Just keep me in mind if you can't get anyone. :D

Questions:

You appear to need an 8th player before you get started, so I'll play!

Okay that wasn't a question, but this is: Why is Kinseth's Googlescape necessary? I don't get what the point of it is. Filthy's app seems to provide everything except the army cards.

I'm all for C3G, but mixed might cause some problems.

Googlescape provides an interactive map representation, along with representations of the actual figures, where my app does not provide any interactivity beyond the chat window. With the google doc, you can watch your opponent move figures in real-time; otherwise, you are limited to either a video connection to watch your opponent move, or the map/coordinate system, which works but can be time consuming.

A combination of the two apps works best; add in a physical map for your own reference, and an optional voice chat program, and you should be set.

I'm confused. Maybe Kinseth can help me out. I read the Googlescape thread, and what I got out of the instructions was how to add heroscape cards to GoogleDocs. I did not process anything about figure representation.

Check out this doc for an example; note the map and figures, all of which can be moved around by anyone with EDIT access to the document. In other words, you now have a map and figures to move around in a 2 dimensional display.

Technically, you only need a dice/chat app to play...But the above Google doc system makes it much easier to view your opponent's moves, as well as your moves, in real time.

Thanks for clearing that up! But the only pain would be making hexes for all of your figures.

As you can see from the link Filthy gave, it's a question of how much effort you put in. Kinseth graciously put together a very nice looking set of pieces for my army, so we played with that. But when I put together pieces for Charr21's army, I just used basic shapes and colors, like you can see. The latter takes very little time, really.

Alright, we got 8!
So Benji:
1. When do we have to submit our armies by?
2. For the <B+ battle, is it full draft or do we bring pools?
3. How many points do we bring for the draft pools?
4. How many points for heat of the battle?

Just a quick one what is heat of battle?

Check out the Gencon thread, it has a description.

basically you take turns putting units on the board, there is no starting zones. You are coming in, in the middle of the battle.

Open to all players, 28 positions. 4 round swiss with one game final, if necessary. Players bring a pre-drafted 450 point Heroscape army, no Marvel. Army size is limited to 24 hexes. Players take turns placing a card’s worth of units, unengaged, on an empty space. Battle begins after all units have been placed. Tournament is played in 1 hour rounds. Prizes will be awarded.
Additional information: Players will roll the D20 to see who places their first card's worth of units. The D20 roll winner can defer, if they choose. The player who places units second will have initiative for the first round.

5 card stud probably means a 5 card maximum, minimum, or exactly 5 cards. I'm not sure which.

Uncommon was played at TotalCon last year, your army can't have any commons in it, but it can have Uncommon Heroes.

This is C3G.

I mentioned earlier that 5 card stud is 500/24, 5 cards, each from a different general. For example: Omnicron Snipers, Legos X2, Q9, Kyntela, Drow Chainfighter X4
Also mentioned earlier, uncommon is simply no common units in an army.
And 450 points for HoB? There goes my Einar Imperium idea.

Bengi agreed earlier that we would do one game with the semifinals armies in the middle of the schedule. So obviously things are going to change at least a little. Here is what I said then:

I don't have a lot of experience with RTW, so I will defer to you on this one. We will go with a midseason game and Semis game with the same army, followed by RTW for the Final.
So, if 525 is the total for the semis/finals, then we'll need to insert that into the linup around week 4. Bengi's current lineup:

  4. 525, kill 'em all
  5. 1000 point draft pools, pooled draft, 500 point game?
  6. Heat of Battle (points?)
  7. 510 points, full draft

As far as I'm concerned we can tweak any of those point totals, in addition to adding a point total for HoB. As I said earlier, I don't want to get into suggesting point totals, because I can't do it without already having an army in mind.

How about a d20 roll. We could have a set amount of points, like 400, and add 20 for each number on the d20.

Ex. Roll of 11 =520 (400 + 20*11)

We could change the base points depending on what works best with each format, and possibly how many we add.

Sorry guys, I've been busy lately. Later tonight I'll update this with some final decisions on stuff, now that we have 8 participants.
