Ever since I downloaded Virtualscape, my daughter (who will be turning 8 soon) has loved making maps on it. So, we decided to submit some maps to the Gencon map contest.

Wow, all your maps look really good, but I just wanted to say how impressed I am that your 8 year old designed some of them. She's very talented, I couldn't even make my own bed at that age... actually I still can't:D.

Thanks for the compliment but no, it hasn't had near enough playtests yet to even think about nomination.

Your new maps Fissure and Quarry look kinda cool. I might try them out sometime. Quarry could probably benefit from a jungle set though to offer some support near the outer rim. Of course, this only speculation cause I haven't played on it yet. Just a thought.

Also; congrates on your fathers day gift, build in good health.:)

Excellent maps8) made even cooler since they give some father daughter time. My 6 year old likes making terrain as well as maps. I'll have to give quarry a try soon!

Just saw that there was a map called Fissure that's going to be at Gencon! So I changed mine to Dark Fissure.

So...For the record, when I say I'll test a Map, I DO test it. There's just a long delay before the magic happens. And then another delay before I post thoughts on it.

Some thoughts on Jungle Ruins:

(+) I love simple start zones, so brownie points for that.
(-) The map isn't very friendly to Double Spaced figures. It is nearly impossible to get any Height with them.
(-) Fliers with 6 or more move can get to max height in one turn.
(+) The giant mound helps close the gap between Melee and Range. Both Melee and Range did nicely on this map.
(+) The map is cool aesthetically.
(+) Deathreavers have a hard time cloggin up this map.
(+) Melee Figures can cross the map in about three turns, which is very good.
(-) Flying figures have an annoying advantage on this map.

Now I just need to build Biggabulfrog's Shadow Crossing and I'll be done with the saga of delays.

I think.

Thank you very much! I'll need to look into providing double-spaces figures easy access and not giving flying figure too much access. Hopefully, I can get a revision up soon. Thanks again for testing it out!

On first glance, I like how it looks. Dungeon + Road doesn't give you too much to work with, so no matter what you do it's going to be a bit tight. That center area might be too easy to clog, but the sides are easily reachable from the start zone so that could make up for it.

Its hard to say...I guess I'd be a little nervous in a tournament about how easy it seems to clog it up and shoot over a screen, but it has a fun look to it that would get me to play it at home. Only playtesting would tell if it's too tight in the middle, I think.

Thanks for the comments! I based it loosely off of Ember Canyon Road and I think this one is less susceptible to clogging than that one. I've done some playtesting on it but I need to see how a rat-heavy army does on it.

My first thought is that I'd consider removing the railing, as it seems like it's more likely to punish an attacking army than a turtling one.

I'd also consider shifting the doubled small trees over one hex to the left, to open up another path into the middle.

Overall, it looks solid given the extreme lack of material you have to work with.

Also, my thoughts on the railings was to get you to commit to either the road or the height and not be able to back and forth easily. Can you think of another way I might be able to do that?

Well... not easily. One thought is to put some water in front of the middle of your startzone, so that you have to break around it to the left or right. Another thought is to put the railing in front of the startzone, so you have to climb over it or work around it. This would be much like the way Longheroscaper uses the battlements in Invasion, or mad_wookiee uses the battlements in Vorago.

Both of those changes would require a broader re-working of the map, though.

I really like how Swamp Lab played at the C3G tourney I played in.

Haven't done anything since. Taking a little break. I'll be back at it soon though, probably next month.
