Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

It looks like it is. . . Hey @Jim , could you merge all three of these threads, please? Kthxbye. :)
All three threads discussing this same thing have been merged into this thread, so that may explain any repetitious postings and otherwise wonkier-than-usual things. :)

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

Ug. The specter of "collectable" cards/figures just popped into my head. What if these are blind purchase, like Magic?

Also, in Magic don't you "summon" creatures into the game by playing a card. The Zombie card says "when this squad is summoned". That sounds like there are card elements that you play from a deck.

Apparently Creatures are squads and a Planeswalker is a hero. Anyone that plays Magic have any ideas about the classifications?

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

The story of Magic is *you* are a Planeswalker and *you* summon all the monsters to fight for you. The named characters (Like Jace and Liliana) are also Planeswalkers.

Think of them as NPCs in a roleplaying sense. You are the PC Planeswalker and they are the NPC Planeswalker. So, when Liliana "summons" zombies, that is just a game term for putting the zombie card on the battlefield.

How this is going to incorperate into Magic-Scape, I am not sure, but that is flavor behind Planeswalkers and summons.

And PS: Yes, like Chandra's Phoenix... I too have risen from the ash! WinonaVampire is back!

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

There will be only 5 painted figures... (one hero for each Magic faction).

Also the gameplay is not exactly the same:
-No oder markers (cf board)
-Squads figures do not start on the battlefields and have to be summoned (cf Board picture and Zombies card)
- Each players have "spells" cards in their hand that they can use (cf board picture and Zombies card). I guess there is summoning cards in order to summon the squads.

Also I think you can't mix up factions for some reasons:
-each faction is exactly composed of one hero and 2 squads of 3 members
-Zombies are insanely good for 40 points whereas Lilian insanely bad for 250
Or maybe the heroes are purposely bad for their cost I don't know..

I did this years ago for fun. Check out her Syphon Soul ability ;)

It is almost like I knew something :p

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

I'm betting the squad figures will get painted eventually too. Heroscape started out all black models after all. The description says that these are not blind buying and that you will know what you get. Can't say the same if they despise to do expansions rhough

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

Welcome back, WV!

Will we be playing this as is, or converting it to Scape? (Need I ask?)

10$ on the opposite.

-The goal of this product it to attract Magic players (like they didn't pay enough yet ). I don't think they cares as much as painted figures as we do.

-Plus, the battlefield looks way more than a board game than Heroscape one, non-painted figures aren't such a big deal for this kind of board games.

-They're not grey but painted in the color of their faction.

Also:

Will the game include any collectible pieces?
• Each game will include the same five highly detailed, fully painted Planeswalker mini-figures.

Foudzing gets an A in his Reading Comprehension class. Not bad for a guy reading English as a second language!

More potential links to Scape. Craig VanNess is the designer.

I just quoted for people who eventually missed it.

Knowing WotC, in my opinion "five painted figures" = "the others figures will not be painted".

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

I believe you are right for the right reason, Foudzing, and that's how you get an A. :)

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

In the video @Jim posted, did anyone else notice the "firecats" are almost the same as Deathstalkers? Even the ability seems to be ripped off of Maul.

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

You guys are crazy. Magic is a fantastic game. This basically combines my two favorite games into one. So excited!

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

Magic the Blathering. :p Sadly, I am less enthused after watching the video. Doesn't look like much usable terrain.

I am optimistic. There is a lot of hey, I can grab a few more figures that already have the right bases and a little terrain with it. Plus the potential to convert magic players is awesome.

At the very least this is a little spice to add to the game.

Thanks @superfrog for mentioning this thread. We should apply for an internship at WotC this summer for the very slight chance we can sneak something into this game!

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

I'm so excited for this as well. I hope the Magic moniker will make it so the game will NOT die after one expansion but then again I thought Heroscape would last longer with D&D.

Any new strategy board game with prepainted minis is awesome though, and we may get new Heroscape terrain!

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

Video overview from Essen by way of BGG:

What royally pisses me off is that there's no mention of Heroscape in that video. It's like they're ashamed of it. Heroscape has a long history, coming out of games like HeroQuest and BattleMasters. I'd rather of seen them update one, or both, of those titles instead of forcing our game into the Magic mold. HeroQuest has spell cards. I've got an advanced version of BattleMasters that has spell cards as well. Or better yet just update Heroscape and rerelease it. It's a missed opportunity if you ask me.

I wonder, D&D Heroscape didn't really convert anyone over to anything they weren't already playing. How does WotC think this will somehow do something different? I mean really, will Magic players really want this? As a Heroscape player it doesn't seem to have any attraction to me.

Re: Magic: the Gathering Strategy Board Game (Looks HeroScap

If done right it could be a fun game on it's own. Being able to summon your units right into the thick of the battle will be pretty nice rather then having to start with everyone in a start zone and slowly moving them around the board. I'm a bit surprised they are just going with one plain color for the terrain though. If I were making a Heroscape/Magic hybrid game I would be using the grass tiles as a source for green mana, swamp tiles a source for black mana, water for blue mana, etc. As your hero moves around the board, it absorbs mana based on the tile type it is currently standing on, then to play a spell you must expend the required mana.

Assuming the dice have the same ratio of skulls/swords, shields, and blanks I might pick up a set just for the alternate dice.
