How to play HeroScape online (Outdated)

This thread is dedicated to helping people play Heroscape online. Yes, Online.

Online Combat Dice Rolling Tool and Online Red/Blue Dice Rolling Tool (C3G only uses "combat dice", where Classic Heroscape uses both "combat dice" and "Red/Blue dice" ~ Thanks, A3n, for your help.

What you need to play:
  1. An Opponent(s)
  2. A Chat/Talk service like Skype, AIM, Yahoo IM, Facebook Chat, AliasQ's Chat, or even your Cell Phone if you prefer.
  3. Enough terrain to build a HeroSkype Map (I will explain what a HeroSkype Map is below).
  4. Enough figures for your army and your opponent's (proxies should be OK, as long as your opponent's know before hand, and you should agree that any "line of sight" disputes will go in favor of the player that has the actual figure, otherwise, you will roll a 20-sided die to determine who wins the dispute).
  5. Enough dice, Wound Markers, Order Markers, and any other markers for your army and your opponent's army.
  6. Integrity. You need to be honest with your line of sight checks and your dice rolling. If you feel inclined to cheat, remember that

    is watching you.
How to set up a game:
  1. Ask someone in this thread or in PM if they want to play you. You can then discuss details in a PM on what time you have available to play.
  2. Decide on a Chat/Talk service.
  3. Decide together on a HeroSkype map to use, both parties will need to be able to build the map EXACTLY according to the specifications of the build instructions. HeroSkype maps are currently just two BoV maps that do not have overhangs, and have also had a birds eye view grid created for them (see below).
  4. Decide together on what armies you will each play with, and if proxies are OK. All players will need to be able to field their own army and all other players on their own map.
  5. Have all the dice and markers out that you will need for all armies.
  6. Be honest.

How to play:
  1. You and your opponent(s) will separately set up your OWN army in your designated and agreed upon startzones. Once all armies are in the start zones, each player will then Chat/Talk where his figures are located using the Alpha/Numeric system. EXAMPLE: My Taelord is on A1, Raelin is on A2, and Migol is on A3.
  2. You and your opponent(s) will separately set up your OWN Order Markers. Once Order Markers are set, each player will then Chat/Talk how many Order Markers are on each card (remembering that Order Markers are secret, and you don't want to give away which orders are which). EXAMPLE: I have 3 Order Markers on Taelord, and 1 Order Marker on Raelin.
  3. Roll for initiative, and post results.
  4. Each time you reveal an Order Marker Chat/Talk. EXAMPLE: I reveal Order Marker 1 on Taelord's Card.
  5. When you attempt to move any figure or any thing on the Battlefield, Chat/Talk using the alpha/numeric system. EXAMPLE: Moving Taelord from A1 - I4.
  6. When you attempt to attack with any figure, Chat/Talk. EXAMPLE: Taelord I4 is attacking Stinger J5. 2 Skulls.
  7. When you attempt to defend with any figure, Chat/Talk. EXAMPLE: Stinger J5 defends against Taelord I4. 1 Shield. Stinger J5 is destroyed.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I should say that this system is not untested. IamBatman and I developed it a few years ago, and we played a lot of games this way, and I have played a few more times with others like Spidey'tilIDie and offline friends.
It does work, but if anyone has any suggestions on how to improve on the system, please let me know.
I hope this system will help a few long distance friends finally get some game time in. :D

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I know it would take longer, but could this also be done via PM here?

Because this would be the only way I could play.

This sounds awesome either way.

Thanks!

Re: How to play HeroScape online

PM would take a VERY long time, but it could definitely work. It would be cool if Truth were able to add a Chat Room feature to this site too.

For the most part it's because I live in the country, so I have no wif-fi at my house, and the home computer is in the basement, so I can't set up a game near the webcam.

But, if anyone is willing to play a game of Scape against me this way, I'd be very happy. :)

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I would try it out with you. PM me and let me know what map you wanna play on.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

This looks great. I once started work on a system like this, but I couldn't get down a good system for labeling hexes. It's an idea many have had, but props to you for cranking out a working model. Your system looks really streamline and functional.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I've been thinking about this a lot lately! On-line Chess has really drawn me away from playing 'Scape, mostly because it's so easy to find somebody to play with (heck, it's easy to get to tournaments, too).

Though, I'll admit, it would be nice if there was a reasonable way to play correspondence Heroscape, that way we could each play a couple turns a day. Is there a way to come up with rules for rolling your opponent's defense dice? I figure you have to take into account height advantage and all that-- that's the biggest hurdle, it seems to me. But there's nothing about dice rolling that couldn't be fair if it were completely automated (in fact, it could be more fair).

Re: How to play HeroScape online

You know, the more I think about it, the more I think that THIS needs to be the focus of the post-Hasbro/WOTC era-- developing a viable on-line Heroscape game system. I wish I had some programming skills, because I'd certainly be interested in putting effort into that. If I could play Heroscape on-line as easily as I can Chess, I think it could create the demand that might eventually get Heroscape back into production.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

A virtual game of Heroscape could only happen if Hasbro decided to do it (and they won't) or if Hasbro abandoned their ownership of Heroscape (and they won't). But that conversation doesn't belong here.
This thread is dedicated to helping players play Heroscape long distance with their actual collection. Heck, players could use this system and even play as penpals through the mail. :)

Re: How to play HeroScape online

Griff and I played like this a few times a while back on skype. One of the things i did to make things easier on me was after I built sidewinder I took some painters tape and wrote the locations on them to label each hex (A2, B5,ect).

Re: How to play HeroScape online

That's right, I nearly forgot that we did play. Man that seems so long ago.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I have game coming up with MegaSilver. Maybe someone else will post that they are available for a game. If not, when my "MegaGame" is done, I can start up another one. :D

Re: How to play HeroScape online

Marv_Art was supposed to post in here that he was looking for a game. I hope he does, then you two could play. I know this system works, I just hope it catches on.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I think once people talk about using it, it will definitely catch on! I'm gonna try to add this thread to my signature if I have room.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I am definitely interested. Would it be a problem if this was combined into playtesting, if done with a C3G Ally?

G-O

Re: How to play HeroScape online

Doesn't even have to be against an Ally. I've playtested against my friends who aren't even on the boards.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I mentioned in the BoV thread that I'd be interested in giving this a try with some maps that are up for review. I will very shortly have Trespasser and Stygian Rift set-up in real-life. Does anyone with the technical know-how want to create HeroSkype versions? And if so, does anyone want a game? (Like Megasilver, PM is my first choice as I'm not a current user of any chat system, but if chat is significantly better I suppose I could sign up.)

Re: How to play HeroScape online

Using Skype would speed up the game so much and it's a free program so I highly recommend using it.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I'm actually quite taken with the idea of "correspondence 'scape" as I used to play a bit of correspondence chess. I think I'd rather have a game spread over a few days at a leisurely pace that let me wander off doing different things during the game instead of having to dedicate a chunk of time to play in one go.

I guess we'll all be trying a few different ways of making it work to find the one that works best for each of us.

Re: How to play HeroScape online

I would love to hook up some HeroSkype maps for you Ollie, but I know I don't have the time to really knock them all out.
If anyone knows how to create more HeroSkype maps, we could really use a resident artist over here. +rep will be included as a form of payment. :D

I'm only being picky because I know that the only way I'm going to get sufficient throughput of games to be an effective BoV judge is to play essentially all of my home games on the maps that need testing (otherwise Badru Valley would be up right now).

Re: How to play HeroScape online

Here is one for Typhon2222's Stygian Rift:

displayimage.php

It is a bit rough around the edges (my HeroSkype map/legend, not the actual map!), but I am working out the creation process, which roughly involves:
  • Recreating the map in Virtual scape
  • Zooming in just right in order to have the most efficient bird's eye view of the map (the above is off slightly)
  • Creating the grid lines and coordinate points (which is also slightly off in the above map)
I will work on some other maps as time permits.
