How to Host Your First Heroscape Tournament

Crap, something came up. I'll be out of town that weekend, so my only chance is to do it on a Thursday afternoon/evening. What time frame would work best...? It'll be during spring break so it shouldn't be too bad, but still...

I see some good discussion on pre-arranging armies. I have used this for several years and it works pretty fair. Most of the inexperienced players like it because they don't know how to build a balanced army and are unsure of which units bond. Plus, many don't have their own stuff (like I see others have mentioned) so one person could have a great army because they own better stuff and someone else just has a master set.

I have about 50 or so 600 point armies all set up. The top 20 are at the front, numbered, and 2 D20 dice are rolled simultaneously. That's your army and your opponent's for game #1. 2 armies are moved up to take their places and the dice are rolled again for the next pair who are facing off. Armies with similar themes are lined up behind each other so they are not in play at the same time. For instance, I have 2 Kurrok Elemental armies both on the #20 slot, one behind the other. That way they won't ever face off. If the two D20 dice come up the same, it's an automatic re-roll.

I've had very few complaints about this format. Once in a while there is a painful set up. One time I got Marrden Hounds and the map was Breach. Three times I rolled a 3 or less for Pack Movement which meant my move was only 2 and you need at least a move of 3 for a 2 space figure to get out of that start zone. I got slaughtered by Arrow Gruts and Mimring. I tore down Breach and never set it up again. But other than me, nobody seems to complain.

Sounds awesome TOM.
I know I was impressed by your army builds for your C3G tournament.
No surprise though. You do not win a Gen Con championship without knowing a thing or two about Heroscape.
Thanks for representing MI. :)

I guess putting together a tourney just isn't going to work out for me. I'm not going to have time to secure another location and I'm super busy in May and the rest of the summer. And year, period, so... I guess I'll never play a 'Scape tournament.
No need to be so doomy gloomy. You're a young guy, there will be other opportunities for you to go to Tourneys.

If most of the attendees are your friends anyway why not host it in your basement or backyard? You might still be able to borrow tables and chairs from your church if need be.

That's just stupid. I'm sorry, but it's stupid.

Play it in your backyard, or something else. Heck, try the local Jewish Community Center.

Do not decline to have an event because some [bad word] doesn't think it's appropriate for a church. FYI, there are a bunch of people on this very board who are very active in their local churches, who run events (Matthias - GenCon), important programs on this board (madwookiee - BoV), or major customs projects (IAmBatman - C3G). Heck, go ask RevDyer or Tom Vasel if Heroscape is OK with their version of Christianity, IIRC Tom is clergy, and "Rev" certainly is.

That is stupid. But don't you for a second let you think you won't have your event. Find space at a school, or at a different library, or in your backyard, like Cap said. Don't give in like that.

Here's some advice I've given many times before, including to some people on this board:

Don't let the [bad word]s bring you down.

If only you substitute in the correct bad word, you will have some words of wisdom that may get you through times darker than this one.

Now quit bellyaching, and make something happen, ok? Get 'er done.

You may also wish to rebrand your tournament, but that's up to you. ;)

I've only glanced through most of the discussion in this thread, so forgive me if this has been brought up before: If space is an issue, are there any game stores in your area? I've been running events for years at a FLGS (Friendly Local Game Store). They don't even care that Heroscape isn't available to buy anymore. They just like to bring people in the store. Comic book stores might be game too. Just a thought. :)

FWIW, the only time I stepped inside a church during my first eight years in the US was to attend Heroscape tournaments.

Whether this shows that 'scape tournaments attract unsavoury types or demonstrates that it's a good chance to make some converts (or both) I'll leave to others to decide.

(My non-scape non-church streak survived four weddings but ended when I popped into a rummage sale at a church I'd previously gone to a couple of Scapemage's tournaments at.)

Unless your scape is disintegrating after this year, I'm sure you'll have another chance. Patience is never fun. I'm betting you I will never play in a scape tourney ;)

You know, I never told my own mother about my playing heroscape for this reason, I bet she would have given me the same response as your pastor gave you.

I can see how some people of faith could view this game as "dark," but even then I think that's taken to an extreme. I don't think scape explicitly does anything against God, and even if it does, I'm not playing it for that reason. It's a board game, it's a fun way to get together.

I think there are an endless list of things that, while innocent in nature, can be twisted to be dishonorable to those of faith.

Did you try a library? Or was it too small to use?

I have secured the library. I actually did yesterday and handed out/posted fliers... However, I have been extremely busy and haven't had time for an event thread revamp. I'm working on it...

Churches have been my primary source of players. In fact, I've played Heroscape at my church 15 times. No tournaments, but I run a monthly guys game night, of which Heroscape is the most play game. No one has objected, and I've taught several guys how to play.

I think you just got one of the rare unlucky oddballs.

Anyway good luck with the library.

I thought it was too short notice to secure the library but apparently I was wrong. God is good, even though some may say he doesn't like 'Scape. :p

Now, if anyone feels like driving to my awkwardly scheduled event, it would be much appreciated.

Also, suggestions on what prize to give other than a Confrontation starter with C3V cards?

Alright, this is it, folks. My D-Day. More like my TD-Day...

Seven confirmed attendees, including myself, and three "maybe" attendees. So I'm expecting eight or ten, along with a good crop of new/relatively new players. I'm only bringing three maps and my friends are building two. I could build a fourth but I'd have to use BftU and M:tCB. I purposely left it out because I don't want to overwhelm any new players who would play on that map.

The prizes? Confrontation Starter Set for 1st, with cards for the C3V units I so painstakingly printed, laminated, and cut yesterday. For 2nd, a simple unopened Heroes of Bleakwoode pack. Nothing too shiny, but it's better than nothing. Also, most of my players who do have collections have neither, so it does make a good prize. If I win, I'll just keep the prize to use for the next tourney.:D

You only need two prizes for that small a crowd.

You'll also need tourney sheets. I believe there's a template linked in the OP. Here's another suggestion:

Use your smart phone (or any digital camera) to take pictures of the completed tourney sheets. At the end of the tournament, take pictures of each one. Use the pictures to make your post-tourney thread. Then you can give each tourney sheet back to the attendee as a memento, with some ornamentation for the top 3 finishers.

Also, even if you only have 7, that's fine. A "maybe" is normally a "no," in my experience.

edit: It's tonight! Have fun, and good luck!

Tourney sheets? I was actually planning on putting all tourney stats on the library's white board in the meeting room, which I actually reserved... :D

They asked me what organization was reserving it, since apparently it has to be an organization to "officially reserve" it, and I just said "heroscapers!"

You could do that too, of course, particularly with a tournament that size. Maybe a Rolling Rumble format? That works well with a whiteboard. Look in the OP, or soon thereafter, for a description of that format.

edit: Not there, and I really don't have the time to dig for it. You'll figure something out, I'm sure, and look up the Rolling Rumble format if you want.

Rolling Rumble is great and works nicely with odd numbers and a whiteboard.

Rolling Rumble.

The idea is actually pretty simple, all the text is just Ollie going off on possible extra rules and conditions.

With eight attendees, (two who were supposed to come were no-shows, but God is good. Two who were unexpected showed up!) I feel comfortable saying that this tournament was a great success. I want to host another one... Looking at my calendar for June, July, and August. Early June seems like the best bet, and I don't know what I'm doing in July or August.

I only planned on having four rounds of the tourney, with the time allotment, but we got in a whopping five! Even with the imposed 50-minute time limit for each game, most games were finished before time was called, as our top two were extremely efficient at dispatching their opponents' armies. Also, one game went on for the whole time limit, but only 60 and 70 points worth of units died in each army! Hilarious.

I learned a lot and see the flaw of my modified rolling rumble system now, which is the reason I went 5-0 (with a VIPER army!) yet still placed third. However, I can't go into detail. I may get in a more comprehensive report of my tourney later today if I finish this job early... If not, I won't have time till next week. Anyway, I'm glad it was a success. Thanks for the help and encouragement, guys!
