Heroscape.org - New Software Support for Heroscape

Sorry in advance.

There was a data loss on the site this morning of terrain requirement data for maps (i.e. that Map X has RotV x1, RttFF x1, etc.). All the maps are still there, just missing the terrain requirement data.

This was due to a coding error I made this morning when trying to let maps get deleted (it chained the deletion in a way I did not expect that went beyond the scope of a single map).

Unfortunately I do not have a good backup to roll back to for this data.

I will be adding the data back manually over the next few days, going 1 map-maker at a time. However, anyone is welcome to re-enter their data themself as well if they want it on the site before I'm able to get to it.

Apologies for the mistake, and I hope to have it fixed soon.

Update: Almost all of the data has been re-entered. Effectively back to where it was.

If you see anything that looks wrong/missing, please let me know.

I've decided to start a monthly backup of the full .org database incase something causes data loss in the future (like the bug that caused the Map Terrain Requirements to get deleted). Just did one this morning and plan to do a backup on the 1st of every month. Fyi

Would it be possible to add a feature where clicking on your record in the "Me" page would show all of your matches (maybe future published matchups as well)?

Interesting.

I kinda like the idea of adding future/current published matchups, that seems useful and like something that wouldn't grow too large over time.

Probably don't like the idea of showing "all" matches (I already have 173 in the system for myself, and that's going to grow over time, showing 170+ games would take tons of space). What were you hoping to use a list of all past matchups for? (as opposed to going to individual tournaments)

Nice! I think it could be a nice addition to that page.

I'd like to see how my record evolves over time sort of like how OHS tracks records in multiple ways (all-time/current tournament/past year) and I'd really like an easy way to see all the maps I've played on in tournament, at least the ones I've played on that are run through .org. I suppose I could track that on my own, I just also don't want to have to tab through dozens of tournaments to see these records.

I guess what I'm suggesting is optionality in how I access my personal tournament information. Not a huge must, but one that I could see offering several benefits.

I just re-did that section of the page. Added 'Current Games' and separated the tournament list into Current/Future/Past.

Here's an example, using my own page (because I know it has data for all categories currently):

Let me know what you think.

Regarding the personal record evolution stuff, I'm gonna pass on that for now, partly because it's more work and partly because there might be something planned in the future that makes it easier / make more sense in context.

Regarding the map thing, hmm, I'm a bit hesitant to throw up a list of hundreds of maps since I'm not sure how useful that is to most people (and might be overwhelming data). Not entirely sure. Could be convinced to change my mind probably. It wouldn't be that hard to add (I'm just worried about the quantity of text it would throw on the screen).

Just added a minor feature - ability to sort standings (Tournament, League, or Season) by any column (Player-alphabetical, W%, W, L, T, SoS) by clicking on the column header.

Selecting the column elevates that statistic to the top priority while maintaining the priority level of the others in their default setting.

Probably requires a force-refresh to see.

Apparently in your builder (and other places) the names of the characters are links to the books on this site. I had no idea! Is there any way to make this more explicit?

.org now has a Renegade Affiliate Link for sales.

There's no real way for this to not sound like a sales pitch, but I got myself/.org approved as a Renegade Affiliate so I have an affiliate link that's now listed on .org at:

https://heroscape.org/buy/

(also a new site footer link goes to the same page on .org).

Some of you may have heard of the affiliate program already, but essentially if you buy product from Renegade (Heroscape or another game) through an affiliate link it gives a 10% commission back to the person who's link it is.

I know there's already several other prominent 'Scapers who have affiliate links out there, so hopefully this is just one of many options for those who choose to buy through an affiliate link.

Fyi.

First, congrats on the affiliation.
Second, your army builder has been very helpful during my return to 'Scaping, even if I miss Battleplan too.
Third, may I make a couple suggestions/requests. Apologies if these are already requested, I will admit I have not read all 18 pages of this thread.
-- Add set/expansion name to the army data so that I don't have to click through to the Heroscapers "Book of" page.
-- Be able to pull up the army data from the "Army" section that tracks points, figures, spaces. I'd like to be able to place all potential units in the army and then click back and forth without having to search and/or filter.

Last, thanks for all the hard work you've put in for the Heroscape community!

Thanks for the kind words.

Not reading 18 pages seems like a very reasonable choice for how to use your time :)

Add set/expansion name to the army data so that I don't have to click through to the Heroscapers "Book of" page.

I had actually added the underlying data for this only a week or so ago to use in sorts (i.e. sort by release date), but hadn't thought to add it on the unit box. Just did that, so it should display now.

Be able to pull up the army data from the "Army" section that tracks points, figures, spaces. I'd like to be able to place all potential units in the army and then click back and forth without having to search and/or filter.

A lot of people have asked for this over time. I finally broke down and did it tonight. Should be live now.

My concern with this one has always been it causing mis-clicks on mobile, since there's not a lot of screen real estate in that box to work with and the +/- icons already are click targets. So if anyone has a lot of mis-clicks on mobile because of this change let me know.

Beginning to add support for glyphs to the site.

Have a page dedicated to showing the glyphs:
https://heroscape.org/glyphs/
With various sorts / filters (similar to the maps page).
Also added a section on the home page that links to the above URL.

Expanded the database to support linking a map for an individual tournament to the glyphs that it will use. When creating the maps for your tournament, you can now specify any number of glyphs for each map and those will get displayed publicly along with the map on that page. You can add/remove/modify glyphs using the same edit map features that you'd use for other fields like 'location'.

You can see an example of what this looks like for an upcoming local tourney (for me) here:
https://heroscape.org/tournament/?Tournament=238

Would appreciate any feedback / thoughts as this is a new concept I'm trying to integrate.

Catching this rather quickly, but the example link does not appear to be working the way it is intended. I'm just seeing the New Hampshire Event, its details, and the name for the map "Common Ground" with no associated link, map image. or glyphs.

The other link is working just fine!

Try force-refreshing the page (hold the 'ctrl' button when you click the refresh icon).

Sounds like it's using an old cached copy of at least one of the source code pages and you need to tell the browser to update them all.

Let me know if that doesn't fix it though.

Force refreshing the page works!

I see the Renegade cards have been added to the Classic builder. Nice work!

@Chris Perkins

--------------------
Vulcanmech Incendiborgs

Redundant Systems
Start the game with 3 Redundant Systems markers on this army card. After a Vulcanmech Incendiborg receives one or more wounds, you may remove 1 Redundant Systems marker form this card to ignore all wounds.

Should be from, not form.

--------------------
Nicholas Esenwein

Bloodborn Rising
Each time Nicholas Esenwein destroys a figure, ... may not use Bloodborn rising on destructible object.

Should be objects (plural), not object.

Hey Chris, thanks so much for this addition! It's something I've been hoping for, and I think it's a great inclusion.

... unfortunately, it seems to be having issues on my end, but only with certain figures. Greenscale Warriors and Braxas, for example. Something funky happens when I add them both to my army and try to toggle between the two details sections. Both of these seem to play nicely with other units, but for some reason the combination causes fiddliness - clicking on one of their names and then the other may change only the background color, and then prevent me from clicking on anything else.

Unsure how prevalent this is, but thought I should bring it up since it keeps happening!

I've been having the builder freeze on me using an iphone and ipad on mobile and desktop. I'm not sure if maybe it's a click count overload or what, but after a lot of interaction it simply stops and requires a refresh, which in turn loses the current army list. I was thinking this added feature might be to blame. I don't want it to be because I really find it useful.

Speaking of mobile. On my phone, safari browser, there are some army cards that are so long that it hides the entire screen as well as the top portion of the card - name, stats and the X to close. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this. I feel like a scroll bar is overkill, but maybe there's a better option like shrinking the font size a teensy bit? The entire Esenwein clan is notorious for this, and I noticed Xenithrax does it as well.

Added something new today: an embedded map (Google Maps) showing the locations of upcoming tournaments & conventions.

Page:
https://heroscape.org/events/

Thought this might be a cool way for newer players to see what's happening near them if enough local events get their addresses entered.

Currently it only has the 2 upcoming Cons (ScapeCon IV, Scape Summit I) & my next local event listed, because those are the only entries in the site that have the new field 'Address' filled out (which I added today).

The new 'Address' field, if filled out, also appears on the Tournament/Convention page below the date(s) of the event. So if you put it there you probably don't need to put it in the description anymore.

If you want your events to appear on the map, enter the 'Address' field (either when creating the event, or when editing the event) exactly as it appears on Google Maps, and it should then show up on the map. If you try this and it doesn't work, let me know and I'll debug why.

2 Quick Updates:

1) I switched the default sort mechanism on the Builder page to "Points (Low to High)" (was previously "Alphabetical") based on feedback I received.

2) I modified the tournament standings list to respect/follow bracket results, so going further in a bracket now ranks you higher, with existing tie-breakers remaining the same after that.

Couple of Updates:

1) Added a new way to label tournaments, calling it 'Format Tags'. When creating your tournament, there's a bunch of things you can tag a tournament, some are purely semantic and have no effect ('Cheese', 'Bring-2') and some affect the Builder ('RoX', 'Uniques Only'). Eventually hope to add a search by tag for past tournaments, so for example you would be able to search for all tournaments that used 'Heat of Battle' and see the results.

New feature, excited for what it can allow, but there are probably bugs associated with it. If you find issues let me know.

2) I think I finally fixed the bug that was cropping up during conventions where the site's memory got filled up. Happened again during Scape Summit, but this time I'm hopeful I came up with a permanent solution. Won't know for sure until ScapeCon IV in August, but fingers crossed.

3) Finally got a channel on the 'Heroscapers Online' Discord. It's called 'heroscapeorg', under 'Projects!'. Hoping that it becomes the primary place for discussion, including letting me know when there is an issue.
