HELMAVERSE SUPERSCAPE REINFORCEMENTS ARRIVE
Alternative Expansion Packs for Marvel Heroscape

"I recently bought a printer and just got done with my first official HelmAverse match with my son... it was a blast to play... Thanks for making such great cards." - Balantai

“Well me and my dad have kept using your Fan4. I must say, you are a master. I finally got to use them the other day. And I think they are just about perfect.” - tcglkn

“Matt's Fan 4 are great, I have played with them even, and his ability to create awesome ideas and quickly/instinctively know what to do and what not to do is why he is… my number 1 favorite single designer on the site.” – Griffin

“In fact, if you value playing Superheroes alongside Classic, these are the customs you want to play. I think most, if not all, of them would actually play very well with Classic Scape.” - davidlhsl

“I've just finished playing our third game of Helmsverse HeroScape with my wife. She asked to play HeroScape with me! The awesomeness of your cards cannot be overstated. PS - You rock!” - streaky2007

"There's a lot of great stuff out there in personal threads and I can't remember it all, but I've always liked Matt Helm's Mighty Thor." - Sherman Davies

"The fact that you created your own realm of heroscape is downright impressive. The fact that your designs continue to be some of the best anywhere is a bit mind blowing." - Tornado

"I'm digging these newer customs; I may print some out to play with my sisters... they love the Hasbro Marvel set, which your customs fit into perfectly." - Arch-vile

"Just wanted to... say again how revolutionary your take on the turtles is. Any time I think of a Unique Squad they pop into my head. May be the best, most thematic, well designed Unique Squad on the site or in the game. (Not that I've seen them all, but I believe anyone would hard pressed to top this.)" - Spidey'tilIDie

Re: Commisioning a Custom - Nessie, my first try

OK, now I'd like to try my own hand at a custom but unfortunately don't have Photoshop. Therefore, once again I seek the help of my great customizing friends willing to make up an official looking Army Card for me.

I just won a Horrorclix "Nessie" on ebay and can't wait to get her involved. Not only do I think she'll fit in great in Garada's Hellboy-scape, but I tried to design her to battle with Hi's Namor as well. Never mind that she is a perfect fit for classic Heroscape. Therefore, I invite a Hellboy style card, a generic Grey Owl designed Marvel card, or even a classic (Aquilla most likely) card.

When I designed the Specials, I tried to combine the powers given to her by her Horrorclix creators (on that card) with the nature of the Loch Ness legend.

So here it goes, somebody please create a card for me and even more importantly, provide feedback so that I can get some community input.

NESSIE
055nessie.jpg

SEA MONSTER
UNIQUE HERO
BEAST
TRICKY
HUGE 9

LIFE: 6
MOVE: 4
RANGE: 1
ATTACK: 5
DEFENSE: 4

Points: 230

CARRY
Before moving Nessie, choose an unengaged friendly small or medium figure adjacent to Nessie. After you move Nessie, place the chosen figure adjacent to Nessie.

DOUBLE ATTACK
When Nessie attacks, she may attack one additional time.

SNACK BITE
Each time Nessie destroys a figure, you may remove a wound marker from this Army Card. Nessie can only use Snack Bite once per round and cannot Snack Bite destructible objects.

SUBMERSIBLE LEGEND
Nessie does not have to stop her movement when entering a water space. When completely in water, Nessie may double her remaining available move allowance. Add 2 to Nessie’s defense when she is completely in water.

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (UPDATE) Nessie, my firs

I noticed that Miniature Market had the wrong photo for Nessie (I think you're right, they pictured Grendel who can also be a nice piece to consider). From what I found, there is no real stock photo of Nessie to be found so most sites didn't show her or put up the wrong pic. That's why I posted 2 pics in this thread to give you something to work with.

I so excited that you've agreed to take it on. I've always loved the ridiculous legend of the Loch Ness Monster and now I'll get to play with it.

Tell me what you think of my custom ability suggestions. When you get the Horrorclix card, you'll see why I chose Double Attack, Carry and the Snack Bite options. I just made them more Heroscape official. The actual stat numbers were derived from looking at all of the Heroscape dragons and then considering that Nessie would be weaker on land but tougher to deal with in the water. I then took a guess at cost by lining up the dragons and determining who was more powerful and who was less. I also peaked at your Hellboy and Hi's Namor to try and get some balance when fighting them.

I hope I did it right... and can't wait to see what your card will look like.

Nessie

VILLAINS
Brine Witch
Hecate

Hey, I appreciate you doing this! Unfortunately, due to me frequently updating the cards, some of the links are broken. But have no fear! Just go here:
Index of my HELLBOY for HEROSCAPE custom Army Cards
And you will find the most recent version of all of my Hellboy cards... soon to include the brand new Nessie card!

Speaking of which, I hope you don't mind if I add her to the Hellboy Universe. She just seems like she will fit in so well, especially since Hellboy has the Giant Killer power and there are currently no Huge figures in the series. Plus, thematically she just fits right in anyway. Add to that the fact that there are already several other Hellboy figures that have water-based abilities, and we have a winner!

Based on the Nessie research I just conducted [yes, I always do too much research before starting a new custom], I have a few minor changes to propose before I get going on her tonight.

1) I think instead of Sea Monster for species, a good alternative would be PLESIOSAUR. I just think it'll look and fit a little better on a Heroscape card, plus it is the most scientifically-sound theory on what Nessie might be if she actually exists... a divergently evolved plesiosaur.

2) Instead of Beast, I think MONSTER would be a better choice. Mainly because she's The Loch Ness Monster! ;)
I know this cuts out a tiny bit of possible ClassicScape compatibility, but you still have the official Tricky for her personality [which is perfect]. One of my other customs, Frankenstein, is also a Monster, and I may do a future custom with some kind of Monster bonding.

I totally agree with you on using the 'Clix card for ability naming and ideas... I use them all the time [in addition to my library of nerdy reference books]. It's too bad that not all Clix came with a card.

Speaking of the powers on Nessie's card... do you not want Snack Bite to be Bite-Sized Snack [and have it only affect small and medium figures]? Or is the idea that she can take a nibble off of anyone and get some life back?

Man, I can't wait to get off work and go home... so I can get crackin' on Nessie! Making customs is to me what trimming banzai trees is to others. 8)

You don't need photoshop - check out my GIMPtute in my sig. It has everything you need. You'll be creating customs, no problems. ;)

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (UPDATE) Nessie, my firs

whitestuff is the Gimp Guru!

I use PhotoShop, but I still found many of the techniques in his tutorial useful when I was first starting out. Great stuff, whitestuff!

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (UPDATE) Nessie, my firs

Garada - I'm good with the changes. Beast was pulled from official scape and "Sea Monster" seemed almost necessary but I really did consider plesiosaur and think you've hit it on the head. Go ahead and replace "Sea Monster" with "Plesiosaur" and then switch "Beast" to "Monster".

As for the Hellboy label on the card... of course you can. If you haven't noticed, I feel an attachment to your sudden addiction and wanted to assist you as much as a I can. Give me a Hellboy label.

On Snack Bite, I just thought that "Bite Sized Snack" didn't sound right for Heroscape so I changed the name. Then, I forgot to limit it to small and medium (my original intent). But now that I think about it, I'm torn. If you killed a huge figure by taking out a chunk, shouldn't that be the same as completely eating a smaller figure? But I'm OK if we limit it to small and medium figures if you think it's better... I'm really on the fence and can go either way.

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (UPDATE) Nessie, my firs

Whitestuff - Does GIMP allow me to make official Marvel looking cards in the fashion of Grey Owl? Or do I have to reinvent the wheel? I'll gladly try GIMP if it works well with amateurs.

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (UPDATE) Nessie, my firs

With Garada tackling Nessie, I've decided to dive into the second paranormal custom for Hellboy's world. By combining the Dzu-Teh traits with those on the Horrorclix card itself, I hope I've captured a fun and unique common hero for the world of Hellboy-scape. By the way, I'm not sold on Gigantopethicus because it sounds too scientific. Like the Dzu-Teh, I was thinking with simply going "Sasquatch" on that line.

(I'm still not on Photoshop or GIMP yet, so bare with me on the format for now... and as always, let me know what you think).

SASQUATCH

GIGANTOPITHECUS
COMMON HERO
HUNTER
TRICKY
MEDIUM 6

LIFE: 5
MOVE: 5
RANGE: 1
ATTACK: 4
DEFENSE: 2

Points: 85

NATURE'S CAMOUFLAGE
If a Sasquatch is adjacent to a tree or bush, opponents’ figures must be adjacent to that Sasquatch to attack it with a normal attack.

BIGFOOT THROTTLE 13
If a Sasquatch ends his movement adjacent to a tree or bush, instead of attacking you may choose any figure adjacent to that Sasquatch. Roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 13 or higher, the chosen figure receives one wound.

TOUGH
When rolling defense dice against a normal attack, a Sasquatch always adds one automatic shield to whatever is rolled.

If you are using GreyOwl's png files then it would look exactly the same. In fact here is a little tip - if you import all of the png's (borders, panels, fog [if you want fog that is]) into one file (so you can just turn layers on or off as you need), set up place holders in the text areas (right font, sizes etc) and save it as a template (in XFC format [or is it XCF] that you never save over the top of, it will save you a lot of time in the long run.

What's that swimming in the water? Is it a log? An optical illusion? No! It's the Loch Ness Monster, ol' Nessie!

For HellboyScape:

Nessie_v1p0.jpg

And a weird sorta Classic/Marvel hybrid [because I didn't have an Aquilla card], but it looks close enough at a glance. I kept her occupation as her originally written 'Beast' to preserve a bit more Classic feel. Yeah, I know there's no superstrength in Classic, but Nessie probably is super strong! I can change it though:

I'm going to give Sasquatch a try tonight... wow, Hellboy for Heroscape is growing and growing. I'm also planning to do a Golden Army common hero using some MageKnight Golems [can't think of the exact name right now, but they look a lot like the Golden Army from Hellboy II] and maybe a Unique Elf to go along with them. If you saw the film you know what I mean!

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (3/24) Nessie & Sasquatc

WOW - I wish this darn system allowed me to give you more rep Garada. I guess I have to get around the site a bit more and recognize some other great posts before I come back to you.

Awesome job, I love our Nessie (I like the Hellboy version a tad better but my son likes the classic one).

I've been thinking and we probably should change Snack Bite to "Each time Nessie destroys a small or medium figure..." It gives me the visual of Nessie grabbing the entire figure in her mouth and chowing it down. With Huge figures, she probably would be more concerned with the kill itself and not taking time to stop for food.

Feel free to make the change... and thanks for the credit on the card, my "name" in lights.

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (3/24) Nessie & Sasquatc

Per Necro's suggestion in my thread, I'm changing the wording on Snack Bite. I also like the visual of her gulping down a figure. Yowmp!

And hey, you wrote her, so it's only right that you'd get credit for it! Basically, if someone stumbles upon it out of context, they should know who made it.

By the way, BIG shout out to GreyOwl for all his awesome hard work making the card graphics. The custom community here wouldn't be the same without his contributions.

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (3/24) Nessie & Sasquatc

Nessie's getting an update and Sasquatch will soon be making his debut. This Hellboy set is coming along. My next attempt is a bit more obscure and may need a lot more feedback before it makes its way into Garada's collection, but here it goes.

Nesie and Sasquatch were Horrorclix, this Thorn Crawler is a Mage Knight piece (I'm not sure about the height because I haven't gotten one yet). I tried to do a little research on the Mage Knight piece special abilities and incorporated that into Hellboy-scape.

REL-WARC-THORN

DEMON
UNIQUE HERO
DEVOURER
TERRIFYING
LARGE 7

LIFE: 6
MOVE: 6
RANGE: 1
ATTACK: 2
DEFENSE: 4

Points: 125

WOUNDED SMASH
When Rel-Warc-Thorn attacks, he receives one extra attack die for each wound marker he has.

RAGE REACH 2
When Rel-Warc-Thorn attacks, he may add 1 to range for each Wound Marker he has, up to a maximum of 2 extra spaces.

BARBED ENGAGEMENT
Unfriendly figures must roll 2 attack dice when leaving an engagement with Rel-Warc-Thorn.

CARRION DISTASTE
If a friendly figure is destroyed while adjacent to Rel-Warc-Thorn, Rel-Warc-Thorn must immediately move to an empty space, 2 spaces away from the destroyed figure. When Rel-Warc-Thorn moves due to Carrion Distaste, if he is engaged he will take any leaving engagement attacks.

**UPDATE/EDIT - As Garada pointed out, a common hero must have a Life of 1 for playability. If that were the case, the Wounded Smash and Rage Reach obviously wouldn't have worked. Therefore, I went with a Unique Hero take and gave my demon a name. I also patterned updated wording Wounded Smash after Krug rather than the original modified Hulk's Rage Smash. I hope this makes it better.

Sasquatch! [and Nessie fixed]

Wowee Zowee, it's a Sasquatch!

Sasquatch_v1p0.jpg

Something I realized as I was making the card last night was that he's a Common Hero but his life was 5. Unfortunately, Common Heros can only have 1 life [or else keeping track of multiple commons life would be a nightmare]. So I gave him 1 life and lowered his cost to 45 to compensate.

HOWEVER... I also made a variant card, a Unique Sasquatch called... BIGFOOT!

Bigfoot_v1p0.jpg

He retains the 5 life, and I went ahead and gave him the 3 defense you originally had listed. I also made his Throttle a tiny bit easier to pull off. All of this just to show that you don't mess with the leader of the Sasquatch! Actually, one idea I had was to print out both versions and glue them back to back... that way if you only have 1 sasq, it can be Bigfoot, otherwise, if you have multiples, flip the card over and BAM!

BTW, I also fixed Nessie's Snack Bite per Necro's suggestion. I like it a lot!

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (3/24) Nessie & Sasquatc

Also, I'd love to do the Thorn Crawler! I may not have time tonight, but I'll try!

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (3/24) Nessie & Sasquatc

Awesome on all fronts. I love the Bigfoot distinction. I knew you were the right man for the job.

By the way, if you're interested, I found this .jpg of the Aquilla card.

I don't know if it will work with your program of choice but hopefully it helps.

... and I'm guessing by the punctuation used in your agreement to take on the next one, you like the Thorn Crawler as a Hellboy card.

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (3/24) Nessie & Sasquatc

I updated the Thorn Crawler above to make him a Unique Hero.

Hey Garada, do you think we need to change "bush" on Sasquatch/Bigfoot to "brush" to fit with the official terrain released thus far? I kind of wanted to incorporate all possible plant life as a hiding place and point of sneak attack for our mysterious monster and therefore went with the general term "bush". It leaves it open for those custom terrain creators who make their own bushes. But now I'm afraid that it might leave debate over "brush". Am I over thinking this? Does it need to be "tree, bush, or brush"?

Let me know your thoughts.

Rel-warc-thorn

I found some time last night to slap Thorn Crawler, Aka REL-WARC-THORN together. Good job I got your email before I went to lunch!

Rel-Warc-Thorn_v1p0.jpg

I must say, he is your 'Most Awesomest' write-up yet. Smash & Reach are a great combo. I realized when I saw the 6 life and realized that the 2 best powers required him to be able to take wounds that he HAD to be a Unique Hero.

The funny thing is, when I noticed that he would have to be a Unique Hero, I made a note that you'd have to create a more unique name, something more Lovecraftian. Rel-Warc-Thorn is perfectly evil-sounding.

Keeping him a Unique Hero is a great idea anyway. For one, I only have to buy a single mini [my wallet thanks you], plus a nice mid-priced Demon will come in handy for Hellboy games, especially if anyone is doing a campaign-style game... Rel-Warc-Thorn would make a great 'mini-boss'. Not only that, but in mixed games, my Klarion custom has a 50% d-20 chance of getting to take a turn with any Demon before his turn. Cool!

I cleaned the wording on Barbed Engagement up to match the wording of A Coward's Reward... it's the same power! Carrion Distaste is awesome, I love characters with disadvantages and this is a cool one. By forcibly disengaging and risking wounds, you are also gaining the possibility of boosting your Smash and Range. So sweeet!

Oh, one last thing I did, when I was 'de-pluralizing' the wording in the power, was called it an 'it' instead of 'him'. I kinda like it being a horrifying, genderless demonic terror.

Also, Rel-Warc-Thorn looks a bit like my Giant Centipede [another great HorrorClix figure] looks like its little brother.

I'll probably clean up the art a bit with the first round of revisions.

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (3/24) Nessie & Sasquatc

This is getting good. If we weren't in different time zones, the edits could even be faster.

By the way, did you look at my other potential edits listed above? I cleaned up some wording. "Normal Attack" was not needed as it only has one type of attack, therefore a senseless distinction. I also would like to go with Wounded Smash (from Krug) rather than the Hulk's "Rage". It looks better, it's shorter, and it only adds one more attack die capability.

I love your change to Barbed Engagement and the choice to go with "it" rather than "he".

Re: Matt Helm's Commission a Custom (3/24) Nessie & Sasquatc

Great catch on the wording of those 2 powers, I have made the changes. The cool thing is, with the text a bit shorter on them both, I was able to increase the text size to my preferred standard, 7 point. Sometimes I have to cheat and make the text a bit smaller [I try not to go below 6.5 and would NEVER go below 6... I'd re-write the whole darn card instead]. Readability is #1!

I also cleaned up the art a bit. Hope you like it!

What's next? 8)
