George R. R. Martin (as well as other recommendations)

I took a little break, but will be starting "Swords" tomorrow. I can't wait.
I have really been enjoying this series. I can't wait for the HBO show, though I'm not really sure how it'll work.

Check it out. GRR will be in town. Looks like they're looking for gaming too.

Jormi, if I get the word, would you help me with a Madison event? We could check out GRR Martin in our down time.

I can't think of anything that would be on my schedule that far in advance, so I would be definitely down for it.

Glad you like the series so far Joah, it only gets better. I can't wait until he gets another one out, after reading the four books right after one another, I'm kind of jonesin' man. In the meantime, I'm going with Nether's recomendation of the Dresden Files series. I'm halfway through the first book and picked up the next four in the series today :D

Duuuuuuuuuuuude, what's up with all the cows on that oddcon site. I mean, they got some kind of fetish or something? :p

It would be cool if you got to meet GRRM at the cowcon, have him sign his new (fifth) freakin' book in Song Of Fire And Ice for me, or tell him to kick it into gear and stop the whirlwind tour and get his arse back to writing. :D

Hows about you come and get your copy signed?
What are you, five hours away?

And yes, sometimes they get a little "cow crazy" around here.

My wife is into cows (not in that way you perv) so our kitchen has got cow crap all over. Nicknacks, pot holders (not that kind either) oven mitts, salt shakers etc. At least I maintain the DCZ (Decowized Zone) at the border of kitchen/dining room. So far so good. :)

Five hours isn't too bad a drive, but I am seriously booked with work for quite a while and barely have time to cut my grass or scratch my _ _ _ . Starting this coming week, I'll likely be working 6-7 days a week for quite a while, either out in the field or in the office. Heck we even had to postpone our vacation to the Dells until maybe next year

Oh well, enjoy the oddcon and give GRRM my regards.

Aarrggghhh!!!

There's too much stuff I'm waiting on - sometimes the the internet can be a bad thing :D

Oh well, I can always enjoy the first 4 books while GRRM puts around, visiting cons, watching professional sports, doing everything I would probably do if I were a world-renowned author who's making good money and has his publicn at his beck and call.

See, he KNOWS how it ends so he has nothing to worry about.

Anyway, sorry about that... really good series... can't wait... blah blah blah...

Weirdest quote of the day.

Well..living in the midwest, you're bound to have some cow crap laying about, ours just happens to be in the kitchen.

I was just checking out the iTunes store and they have a free audiobook interview with GRRM. It's like 38 minutes long and I haven't had time to check it out, but will later. Just thought I'd give people that are interested a heads up about it.

Cool. I've been keeping up to date with his little "Not a Blog" on his website, but that interview should be pretty nice to hear.

He did another one recently on "Second Life", and the transcripts can be found on his website as well.

R(obert) J(ordan) says that book 12 is the last one even if it has to be 2000 pages but we'll see. He originally said book 6 would be the last one I recall. I just hope he doesn't die before he finishes it because he really is sick.

Actually, Jordan said it was originally going to be 3 books. That's way back where there was only one book in the series. That's when I started reading them. Like I said, I stopped reading at the book after Dragon Reborn.

But back on topic of GRRM, I hadn't heard anything about an HBO show until I returned to this thread today. Are you guys serious? <Heads to Google>

Yeah, the producers of said show were on the "Second Life" interview with him - wheels are definitely rolling, and it sounds really cool.

I met Jordan on the UK release of the third book. "6, maybe 7" was his promise then.

Reading the "Saga of Seven Suns" sci-fi at the moment. What with peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy and Pandora's Star duology, Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs series, and now this, there's some very good sci-fi about.

At this rate, GRRM is never going to get to the second trilogy. I consumed the first three books, felt a little let down by Feast, and now no longer hold my breath for Dance with Dragons. I did this once with Jordan, I'm not doing it again.

Ditto.

I'm looking for some good fantasy reading recommendations in the style of George R.R. Martin. No offense to anyone who has a great book to recommend, but if you haven't read George RR Martin then I honestly am not that interested. I may miss out on a few great books by doing that, but for now I'm looking for what I consider to be fantasy novels unlike anything else out there.

If you haven't read George RR Martin, pick up A Game of Thrones. GRRM breaks all the rules of fantasy novels and fiction in general. He is not afraid to kill a character even main characters. Since everyone is expendable you're on the edge of your seat the entire time.

I've only read the first book so i don't have all the info yet, so take this with a grain of salt. My summary is as follows. Brutally slow. Many (not all) boring characters. And of all the books I have ever read (alot), it has never taken me so long to finish a book. Maybe the next few will move better, because I was amazingly underwhelmed. I thought "The Wheel of Time" series moved slow, but that was more captivating than Ice and Fire part 1.

To each is own. I guess all the political intrigue is what makes it so boring for me. I hate politics in my world let alone a fantasy world. I know I probably should'nt read Book 2, but once I start something, I have to finish it...even if it takes me 20 years!! :D

I started the first book and had to put it down because it was too slow for me. After about a year or two, I tried it again and stuck with it and never looked back. Now I'm caught up with the series and waiting for tne new one.

It's not a hack and slash only type series , though there is plenty of that stuff. The intrigue and the unexpected twists are the genius of the series, not to mention the awesome characters and their development.

I found the first book to be the slowest and hardest to get through, after that, I couldn't get enough.

I only read the first book, as well, and I was thoroughly pissed off when I finished it. I like my books to end "happily ever after," that's why I read fantasy novels in the first place. This series is too real, the characters are too cruel. It takes me to a world that I don't like, where everything is twisted and wrong, and at the end of the book, everything and everyone is worse off without even the slightest chance (it seems) of ever getting better. It's too depressing for me.

The realistic nature of the series is the disturbing and genius of it. It reflects what life might have actually been like back in the middle-ages as opposed to the romantic view of that time that is often presented. Life was hard and cruel back then (and it is now as well in different ways) and GRRM brings it out quite effectively. While I really do enjoy this series, I wouldn't want everything that I read to be as emotionally involved.
