George R. R. Martin (as well as other recommendations)

It would be nice if there was a running calendar thing. As time progressed then they could periodically flash the current date on the screen (i.e. [Month] [Day], [Year]).
Actually, that reminds me in a roundabout way. Was it only the first episode where they named the locations when we first saw them? I'm very familiar with the books, and I don't find it confusing, but it seems odd that they would do that for only one episode.

It was just the first episode (actually, I only remember seeing "Winterfell" on screen).

As for showing a calender, Westeros doesn't have our seasons, and there is never any mention of months as we know it, so I really don't think that would work. I don't really think it is necessary either.

Best episode yet.

Agreed. Good call on the Hound vs. Mountain. And you never know. We may see The Blackfish yet. I found the following while looking around for Game of Thrones info.

Blackfish Delayed
Over at “Not a Blog”, George R.R. Martin runs through several of the actors cast in roles related to the Vale of Arryn—Lysa Arryn, Robin Arryn, and Ser Vardis Egen. More notably, he touches on the fate of Ser Brynden Tully, the Blackfish. George explains it best, so we’ll quote him:
“... alas, his appearance has been postponed. Even with such a huge project as ours, there are budgetary constraints that require some characters to be cut, combined… or deferred to later seasons. That’s what is happening with the Blackfish. The plan, I am told, is to delay the introduction of the Tullys (Lord Hoster and Ser Edmure as well as Ser Brynden) until the second season. Brynden’s part in the events of A GAME OF THRONES will be filled in part by Ser Vardis Egen, and in part by Ser Rodrik Cassel.”
So, if the show gets a second season, we’ll be seeing the rest of the Tully clan.

The above was from July of 2010. So we should see him in Season Two.

^I was just going to mention this. It's an understandable cut. The books will always be best, but I'm still in love with the show.

Amen to that. It's rapidly becoming my favorite show. Pushing aside Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. (It helps that neither of these shows are currently on, but still.)

HBO's production of A Game of Thrones has finally motivated me to start reading the series (before I see the show :D).

All it took was the prologue and I'm totally hooked.

You're going to freakin' love it! Game of Thrones and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are the top things I recommend whenever the opportunity arises. If only they were combined...

Buffy the Kingslayer

The wife and I really used to dig Buffy the Vampire Slayer when it was on TV. It was quite funny, especially Spike.

While I saw the first episode of Game of Thrones when it was aired, I don't have HBO and will wait to by the DVD release. I can't wait. The books are awesome and I'm in the middle of re-reading them.

Fantasy Flight Games has a Game of Thrones: Living Card Game that from what I hear is very very good. I'm jealous because I don't have have people near me that would be interested in that game, otherwise I'd be on it like flies on poop. I did get FFG's Lord of The Rings: Living Card Game and I really enjoy that. It can be played solo or co-op and I know people that will play that one and I can play it solo whenever I like. The Game of Thrones game isn't solo or co-op as it obviously wouldn't be thematic that way. You need to have other players to enjoy the great dynamic of the books.

I'm going to get the Game of Thrones LCG soon, I saw it at my FLGS. I have at least one person who will play this game with me, but I've heard it excels at 3 or more players.

Yeah, that's what I heard as well. Hopefully you can find a third and fourth player. I've read a lot of good things about it. Let us know how you like it. :)

I've got the Game of Thrones card game, and I think it's great. Especially if you're willing to commit to picking up some of the expansion packs.

In case you're not aware, the attacking is very interesting. It's sort of like magic in the attack phase, but you can choose three different types of attacks: military (a brute force attack), intrigue (spying and causing people to discard) and a power attack (vying for political power). You can attack with each different power once. That means that you have to decide who to commit to fights. If you let the attack go unchallenged then your opponent gets power tokens from the defending players house.

Plus at the beginning of the round you reveal one of the limited number of plot cards. You decide the order. Basically this determines who goes first, how much money you have to buy [mana-like lands] which provide gold to put units on the field, and there are other effects like where you have to pay money to be able to attack your opponent. It keeps it interesting and adds to the theme.

The GoT LCG is MUCH more interesting and fun that the LotR LCG (which I was very excited about).

This is a boiled down version of the game. Check it out!

I like the LOTR LCG a lot and I'm sure it will get better with Adventure Packs. It provides a nice niche for a solo and co-op game for me. However, I can see how AGOT LCG would be more fun as it's interactive with other players as opposed to playing against the Encounter Deck. :) I'm envious of those that have play groups that will play it.

So...what did everyone think of ADWD? Spoiler-free of course....

I was pretty satisfied. Sure, there were some big cliffhangers, and the narrative was choppier than I might have hoped, but I still thought it was superbly well written.

I thought it was almost as good as the first 3. For me, Feast for Crows was a bit of a let down, and lacked a lot of the intrigue of the first three. I don't know if it was a lack of favourite characters or what. It was still a very good book just falls short in comparison to the first three.

I can't do this spoiler free...

Spoiler Alert!

I tried limiting myself to two chapters a night, but there were times I flat out ignored that. I definitely tried not to read two chapters from the same POV in the same sitting.

I have been trying to read just one chapter and then do something else for a while. Last night I read 2.5 chapters in a row though:)

I responded to your comments within the spoilers in italics.

Spoiler-free though...I read the series for the third time before reading ADWD, and I enjoyed the fourth book a lot more this time. I think its biggest issues are pacing, and the lack of my favorite characters (like you said). Putting it together with ADWD, I think it works a lot better. I still think ASOS is the best book in the series, and it will probably stay that way, but let's face it...despite the issues that stem from the split in publication, the fourth and fifth books are still head and shoulders above anything else out there.

I'm still reading ADWD but I can already tell you that I think he made a mistake breaking books 4 & 5 up the way he did. Should have just kept is chronologically divided. Didn't like rereading Gilly and Sam being sent away from the wall from Jons' perspective. For me that happened long ago and Sam is already there. Also knowing what happens to Davos from the Queens perspective in book 4 made reading his chapters feel like a waste in book 5.

Oh, and "Where do whores go?" might be my new favorite line. Just how do I work it into a conversation???

I actually liked seeing that scene from both Sam and Jon's POV. It was interesting to see what they were thinking, as well as the things they each almost said, but didn't.

It did take a but of rethinking to remember that you were reading about events that happened at the same time as the beginning of book 4. I think that rather than a split, they could have been combined in one book. Its about 500 pages into aDWD before the events over lap. A really long Feast for Crows would have been a better option.

I didn't find Davos' chapters a waste in this book. In fact

Spoiler Alert!

I agree with what you said in the spoiler section. I thought the same thing while reading Feast, it has become his MO. What I meant by it being a waste is the lead up chapters to that moment. When he is on the little island, I already know he makes it to the mainland. When he is on the mainland, I already know he will end up in chains. Those facts were revealed in Feast. Those chapters would have been fine had they been included in Feast, which is why I wish he would have split it differently. At over 900 pages for ADWD, the two books really could have been 3.

Well, now that both have been released, perhaps we'll see another edition where the narratives have been combined...either as one long book, or two books split chronologically. Although I don't know how GRRM would feel about that...

In the past GRRM has half jokingly stated that if you didn't like his decision to split the books, when both were released, you were welcome to cut them up and rearrange them to fit as one book. It would be interesting if he would post an "official" order of the chapters chronologically for those willing to do that, heh.
