George R. R. Martin (as well as other recommendations)

He's The Hound, but, if memory serves, Joffrey refers to him as "my dog" and calls him "dog."

That's because Joffrey secretly wanted to be a rapper.

Just because Joffrey does it doesn't mean we all should. If Joffrey jumped off a cliff would you jump off a cliff? I didn't think so.

I'm thinking of so many "just because Joffrey" jokes right now, but I don't want to spoil the books for those who haven't read very far.

I won't be buying Joffrey's rap album, but I will illegally download it, so I can enjoy the music without putting more gold in the Lannister's coffers.

It was great again. The episode started a little slower (I still found it fantastic, but I am thinking for people who haven't read the series). But my wife seemed to genuinely enjoy it and she hasn't read the series. She was devasted with the death of Lady, and was really certain it wasn't going to actually happen. She is also building a hatred for both Cersei and Sansa.

No free HBO this weekend so you will all have to let me know how it goes.

I'm in the same boat. :(

For people that didn't read the series, they will be devastated more than once, especially if they go a few seasons.

Yeah, hating Cersei and Sansa comes natural. Though at least toward the end of Clash of Kings there's a sliver of compassion for Cersei when explaining to Sansa the difference in what she got and what Jaime got in life.

Yeah don't get too attached to any one character as many of them suffer or die at some point.

Another great episode. The only negative for me was Catelyn finding Cersei's single, blonde hair up in that broken, windy tower (with the wind whipping her own hair at the time) days or more after the fact. I like the way it was handled in the book much better. I guess the screenwriters thought having Tyrion's knife in the assassin's hand would add a layer of complexity that the average television-watcher couldn't handle.

Yeah, the whole process on tv was a little too CSI: Medieval for my tastes. But things are bound to change, and the whole 'who hired the assassin' winds up falling flat, even in the novels.

Also, given the point that the series is at, the knife could still turn out to be 'Tyrions'.

I can't imagine they can skip over the entire knife belonging to Tyrion.
Did like the entire assassination attempt scene. It was pretty much how I pictured it when I read the book.

Someone reminded me that they don't realize the knife is Tyrion's until they get to King's Landing and Littlefinger tells them.

The news we've been waiting almost 6 years for: http://grrm.livejournal.com/212603.html

He's gonna have a giant monkey in Dance? I didn't see that coming. I guess the Dragons have to fight something, but I always thought...huh...?

(muted, whispered explanation)

Huh?

(More whispered explanation)

Ah.

Cool! What a great day!

I didn't expect half of what actually happened in the first 3 books... And liked less than a third of it... And yet... book 4 is on my bookshelf (along with too many other books)

Why is it that I like so few of the plot twists but can't walk away from the series???

I don't know. Speaking for myself I like the fact that it keeps me guessing.

Spoiler Alert!

I gave up...

but I'll probably un-give up after he finishes the series.

~Aldin, who maybe shouldn't un-give up after the HUGE disappointment that was the end of the Sword of Truth series taught him that just because an author writes well and has a story doesn't necessarily mean he wants to read it

I responded to your spoiler. (don't press the button...big spoiler!!)

Not as much 'excitment' in this episode, but I enjoyed the pace much better. So much introductions and info to be covered in the first two episodes, that they felt a little rushed. This one felt like it had longer scenes rather than quicker scenes thrown together.
I liked it.

And the knife did turn out to be Tyrion's. ;)

Why haven't we seen any more from Ghost in the past two episodes? We saw him when the dire wolves were found, but he got lots more muzzle time than any of the dogs but yet he's nowhere to be seen.

Am I missing something?

Also, my first casting complaint is that Littlefinger didn't seem very expressive. His mouth moved and his eyebrows kind of went up and down a little, but other than that his face was pretty expressionless. Again, I might be missing something from the books that I haven't read for years.

I wonder if the actor is playing him that way to reflect the mystery behind his machinations and motivations. He's definitely in it for himself, but he's always putting up whatever front seems appropriate at the moment.

There was a brief shot of Ghost in episode two (you could see him in the wide shot when they made camp on the way to the Wall), but I missed him last night.

And Littlefinger isn't exactly as I imagined either. For some reason I pictured a shorter man.

My biggest casting complaint so far is Ser Ilyn Payne. He doesn't fit my mental image at all...

Littlefinger is short in the book. On the plus side the guy they got portraying him (Aidan Gillen) was great in The Wire.

I totally agree with you on Payne. The guy didn't seem fearsome enough. Just kind of old and crotchety. They describe him in the book as "pock-marked and beardless with deepset eyes and hollow cheeks...only a few wisps of hair remained to him...but those he had grown as long as a woman's." Still, I feel like I'm splitting hairs (and Payne doesn't have enough hair to split. Ha! Get it! See. Cause Payne doesn't...cough...never mind.)

Nice one. I agree though, I feel like I'm nitpicking. If these are our biggest gripes with the show, then that's good. Nothing will live up to the books, but they're doing a pretty damn good job.
