GenCon 2024 Event and Army Discussion

Has anyone already have an answer to this? If I pre-ordered through Renegade when they first opened, can I let them know that I want to pick it up at Gencon? I did not see a way to do this.

If you've already placed a pre-order, you need to message Renegade customer service and tell them you want to change it to gencon pick up.

Otherwise, there is a code to put in during checkout

Just to be clear, it looks like the main event changed the format to uniques only. I believe it did not have that restriction during the wish list phase.

I don't think it changed from the last we heard on this board last week with Thursday being the only non-unique event.

So the Saturday Morning 10:00 event is AOA only? How do you play in it if you have not bought figures yet? Can I only play in this one if I pre ordered and picked up a master set and a Battle box? I know that Friday and Saturday afternoon are 400 points classic uniques only, but am confused about how to approach Saturday morning.

You need to have the figures to play, so I think you have a few options…

1. Preorder through Renegade and schedule Gencon Pickup.

2. Buy a set at Gencon.

3. Hope that your preorder gets delivered to you before you have to leave for Gencon.

4. Borrow figures from someone who is doing option 1 or 2.

Thanks, Boromir. I will certainly not count on the delivery before Gencon. Tiamat and I are only there Friday and Saturday. Guess we will have to figure out a Friday pick-up and do a carry around.

Just paint them well enough that they can’t tell ;)

No way man! Renegade is playing me to be "That guy" at all the events and rat people out LOL

IMO I think it sucks donkey balls. I am sure there is some lame ass excuse but it you want to get newbies excite about 2.0 let them use 3d prints.

Companies pretty much don't let you use prints in official events unless of course they sold the stl for it.

Doesn't really affect casual game nights, locally run tournaments etc. Just something games usually have to deal with for big events like Gencon and Adepticon. In fact, if Heroscape events come to Adepticon, you can expect there to be a painting requirement, which is something imposed by that con.

I guess I could see them not allowing 3D prints IF they were still selling the older items, but when the the items are out of production and there doesn't seem to be plans to do reprints, it just doesn't make sense to me. They don't lose any sales since they aren't selling the older units. It actually might hurt their sales of the new sets since it could alienate people who have invested in reprints - although since it is only for their "official" tournament so far, maybe not. Most games are run by hobbyist and I've not seen any of them ban reprints.

As an aside, I only have one 3D print that I picked up a ScapeCon and it is pretty good - can I tell the difference from the original when set side by side? Yes, but it doesn't affect game play - There are only some cosmetic differences (e.g., base doesn't have sticker) not the shape, size, etc.

In my experience the current availability and production doesn't matter, and official tournament packets will end up spelling out the requirements for customs and prints. Some companies I know will allow a custom creation to be in an official tournament if a certain percentage of its matter came from their product, so people have kit-bashed things before.

These decisions likely involve their ownership of the IP and the fact that even if they don't have near future plans to do something with it, might in the far future and will make determinations based on how they want their IP represented on the table at an official event.

The fact that they had to get permission from Hasbro/WOTC for D&D Scape to be legal at the tournament falls in a similar category. Why would WOTC care about a product they aren't selling anymore and people already have being used? Because at some point Hasbro/WOTC might not want that brand to be seen as associated with this brand at official events. Obviously that didn't happen this time, but will be something official events likely will have to dance around in the future.

Personally I could give a Flying **** if some kid, at my age you are all kids, shows up with some 3d printed 4th mass or axe grinders. I'm there to have fun and I think my opponent should too. Now if you show up with Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls and tell me she is Charos, I'm not buying that ****. Note Mojo Jojo would be a perfectly acceptable proxy for Laglor, as long as you have custom made and easily identifiable General Dice

Yeah, I get it. A line has to be drawn somewhere, and that is a safe line to draw. As already mentioned, it's just rough because the product isn't available anymore.

I am still glad that they are including classic units; they could have only held events for AoA units if they so wanted.

As someone with primarily prints, I feel the need to point out that the 3D print rule is only for official events... if those are the only events you plan on attending, you'll be missing out on the best stuff!

Man I walked into a hornets nest…

I’m only playing in the Thursday event because I have other stuff on Saturday. 500 points with no A+ restrictions, but at least an 18-figure limit. It’s gonna be a rats nest in there…

I think I’m happier to play this one than a unique-only event though. Common squads make Heroscape the most fun IMO, and I think have the most strategy attached to them.
