Gencon 2019 Results

Well met!

14. Sir Dendrik: Vipers x4, Venoc Warlord, Krug 4-2

Yo yo yo I went 5-1, not 4-2! Blasphemy.

I'm psyched to finally have some of those sweet GenCon dice. Also I can now say that I beat dok, which is some serious street cred.

I had a blast this year--thank you guys for a great time, and for enduring my lack of social skills. I'm already thinking about what army I want to bring next year.

Congrats Sir Denrick! I noticed no “lack of social skills” at Islandscape. You just quickly and quietly crushed us. No trash talk, crude jokes, etc. A perfect gentleman.

I've enjoyed Sir Dendrik's's sense of humor for years; it just usually doesn't come out in the middle of his games. Check out any of his stuff in the old Summoner Wars forums (he's Esper88 there).

You guys are silly. The top players are Craig Van Ness, Rob Daviau, and Stephen whateverhislastnameis.

Edit: And 4th is Bobby Fischer.

Congrats to Nathan for taking it down!!!

Nathan!!!!!!!

(Infectedsloth won)

Congratulations Nathan.

Thanks guys!

I had a great run this year, 14-0! I don't think I'll be able to duplicate it, but it was rush while it was going.

This debate is kind of silly, and (IMHO) kind of disrespectful to the two people who actually played for the Main Event championship.

Thanks for having my back @Dad_Scaper, but I'm not offended.

I played @kevindola at my first tournament way back in 2011. He was actually my first ever lose. Since then we've clashed both online and at Illinois tournaments. He's a very skilled opponent. I consider him, @dok and @Matthias Maccabeus to be the undeniable top three right now.

For people who don't make it over to the online scape area of the forum, you may find the online player rankings thread interesting.

For clarification purposes, I’m above dok. I mean everybody already knew that but maybe for the one guy that didn’t.

Veggie and I just finished up our HoB Uniques finals online. I ended up with the W.

You can't forget about some of the old greats as well. I know the metagame has changed, but @spider_poison would catch on in a heartbeat. The brothers @ManTrainChooChoo and
@Mattstertruckrally also deserve top nomination for their consistent high performance.
The Schaub brothers are definitely some of the best (definitely best in Ohio), wish they still played, but I think they’re still busy with http://Cohio Games.

But it is hard to say because not all the great players get to Gencon, some only online while others only at smaller tournaments and events.

Bad news: I only got results slips from the 16 players that made day 2. No result slips from the rest, so no records. Anyway... here's the non-qualifying armies I have. If people want to chime in with records, or Heroscaper IDs, or the name on the card that had no name at all or missing armies (I know @Deroche is missing, for one), please do.

Update

Didn't see swordforhire with Arkmer, Sonlen, syv, ashra x2.

~Dysole, informationally

I do think IS was playing the best Heroscape of anyone at Gencon last weekend. He didn't lose a game and won some really tough ones (pulled out an incredible win vs. Dysole with a single Nakita vs 7 squad figures starting in his own startzone, beat Matthias Spiders vs Heavies).

Top 4 is a bit silly of a way to think about it given Heroscape's strange cultural state as a discontinued game that we get together to play. But also no one was really thinking about Heroscape skill that way. Caps was mostly just complaining that he was matched against Heroscape celebrities in Day 2 who are always tough to beat :p
Well, he had the matchup vs Ken. Spiders and Wyverns destroy the splash armies we create, because the whole point of splash armies is a gradual positioning game with different pieces. Spiders are actually a really hard counter for those armies (Ken had told me that he was running them and I tested them, those games aren’t even close).

But otherwise, yeah. He was definitely on top of his game this year. Last year was Matthew’s year, this year it was Nathan’s. Ken is still probably the best player at GenCon, especially given that he plays even less than myself or the Ash’s play (I play about 10 games outside GenCon each year, Ken plays about 0).
I didn't really have a splash army, though. I had 2xRats, 2xHSBs, Raelin, and Brandis. Most of that army has 4 defense *outside* of Raelin's aura. A tough matchup for spiders.

I played them poorly, though.

Right, I was talking IS vs Matthias.

Dang, I don't know how I thought you were talking about me...

Infectedsloth had a great year at GenCon this year. No doubt. Congrats on all the dice, man!
Don’t worry, I’m not trash talking you bud. As I mentioned, glad I have validation for the Brandis secret tech hype train!

IS’ army is pretty bad vs Spiders, while yours isn’t. Heavies do not have an easy time when they can’t sit in auras, whereas your 4-defense figures don’t really care, as you mentioned.

As an aside, I tested Spiders vs Romans this summer. Talk about a hilarious non-game... I feel like Spiders have a 90-10 matchup against Romans. They eat them alive.

In the first pic, tag me standing on the front left about to play Nathan @infectedsloth (my only loss - I had to leave after 3 games) - he won the Main event tournament defeating last year's winner Ken @Matthias Maccabeus in the semi-finals - he is sitting on the left next to me.

I’m on the right of Nathan I’m that first photo after suffering my only loss of Day 1 at the hands of Ken. :(
