G.I. Joe Coming to HeroScape?

On the Renegade Discord, @MegaSilver mentioned that G.I. Joe coming to HeroScape was teased at GenCon. Who was there and what was said?

I think this would be great! I love the Marvel set and saw a lot of potential in continuing to cross over IPs in HS. It was very novel at the time, but with Fortnite, Ready Player One, and the like, the time may have come for this to be more acceptable to the IP holders. Renegade’s Transformers license would also be a great addition (especially if the HS minis transformed!).

Have there been any customs based on the G.I. Joe. RPG minis? (I found this old thread on an incomplete mod project, but nothing recent.)

Just: Yo Joe! Was at the end of a slide.

GI Joe is the one IP I've always wanted to Scape with, though, at least for me, it will be a stand alone version of the game. In other words I won't mix it with regular Scape (assuming it's tested to play with it). Some will think that's silly, but I just don't like an established IP mixed with classic Scape.

I was the same with Supers (me not being a Supers fan notwithstanding), didn't like them being mixed (also wasn't recommended by the designers).

Yes, I know, D&D. For some reason that works for me.

I have a hard time seeing a Transformers version of Scape. You can't just have the robots, need to be able to transform. But does than mean every model has 2 versions (robot mode and alt mode)? I leave that up to the folks who are much more creative than I. :)

That's the beauty of Heroscape. You can have it be as mixed as you want. If you wanted a purely fantasy based version you can nix all the soulborgs etc. Even within C3G there are things I don't really like mixing in with my regular supers but other folks do so there's something for most people.

I'm sort of the same with Star Wars. I know HOSS was intended to mix in with Classic but my personal full intention was to have them be their own thing :D

But did want to ask...when did the designers say Marvel wasn't recommended to mix with Classic? I know C3G says up front that they never tested C3G designs with some of the interactions with Classic...but the original Hasbro Supers were tested with Classic.

I hope that it doesn't have any really cool setpieces that I'd want on my maps, because I have neither nostalgia nor even basic familiarity with the franchise.

Ooph, I'd have to go for a deep dive to find those posts. The 'to mix' or 'not to mix' was definitely a hot topic back in the day. At some point some of the folks who helped design the Marvel units said (paraphrasing): You can mix Marvel with Classic Scape but it's not recommended. I think the Marvel/Classic cross playtesting was very limited.

@nyys I'm with @japes on the mixing - Star Wars can't mix, everything else can! D&D is the original IP theft crossover, so it's a natural fit. Also, HS started out with generic fantasy character and tropes and that's mostly what D&D is.

@Nukatha I don't have much G.I. Joe or Transformers nostalgia (I was a little too old but admired my younger brother's collection), but the designs of both are classic. I image they could have awesome set pieces. I like what more IPs bring to HS overall. Yo Joe!

C3G has a bunch of G.I.Joe cards made. Take a look at Wave 46

How do I find that? If you know the specific post in that 100 page thread, could you reply with that link? (Click on the number at the top right of the post to get that URL.)

Would be interesting to see how vehicles are handled, if at all.

We have all the releases in spoilers in that thread, but its a bit intimidating if you're not used to it yeah. Here's a direct link!

Vehicles are awesome in C3G at least :D

I did some work with that old thread ...(art and maybe some testing) but I can tell you the author of that thread was also one of the main designers along with Fret above that worked on the C3G versions that Fret posted the link for above.

EDIT: Ahhh...looks like LP already hooked you up there.

That what I remember from those days as well.

On this new site I seem to be having trouble posting the entire Wave 46, but here is at least Snake Eyes

Here are the C3G 1.0 vehicle rules and yes, G.I.Joe uses vehicles (such as the tank)

Some of these rules are updated in the new 2.0 C3G, but G.I.Joe has not made it there yet.

Very cool mods! Two questions about it though: 1) Where's Cobra? 2) No squads?

@nyys Transformers with a two-hex Huge robot and a one-hex Large vehicle (heights as low as 2 or 3 for a sports car) would be a fun way to do it! Swap them out at any point during your turn for their different stats and better cover. Be a bit more expensive though.

Original Marvel was tested with Classic. I remember seeing some of it. Someone just reminded me a few minutes ago about a Hulk test vs a ton of squads.

There were definitely folks here saying they wouldn't recommend it. I know with some of classic's auto destroy powers it would be a bad idea to bring in something like Hulk that's most of your army and lose him on a d20 roll :D But officially Hasbro has always been pro mixing the official stuff.

But Hasbro would have no gain by saying that. Why would they put out a product and say...don't play this with the rest of the product...they want to sell as much as they can

I think we mostly ignored the transforming and abstracted it with a few powers like the jets strafing fire or some such. Figuring once they were in the battle ... being a jet isn't as useful on a battlefield the size of a Heroscape map :D Not really room to have a dog fight.

I did think the designers that did the C3G Seekers had a very clever way to represent the Jets streaking in. I had no part in it so I feel like I'm ok bragging about it for them :D

HoSS is intended to be compatible with classic Scape, not necessarily something to be mixed, but possible. Part of that was ease of playtesting, since most Scapers would have at least some classic figs. When I get to play, I rarely mix.

I have Joe nostalgia, but it's for the 12" figures. 😀 When the small ones came out, I hated them. That said, after seeing some of the C3G designs, I wouldn't mind seeing them added in.

Would love to see what they come up with and would love the minis. The ones I saw at Gen Con were either a little big or a little small

One of my wishes for heroscape was always contemporary and near future units. More over with AoA I'm missing humans and historical units, so some GI figs would be more than welcome in my table.

I think Killian Vane III is historical (and human), but I agree. Love my Romans and ancient Japanese units!

Yes, the 10 official Marvel units were tested with Classic, implying the original designers intended the Marvel side of the game to be at least somewhat compatible with the Valhalla side. How extensive this testing was, only the designers know. Regardless, their results seem fine - if you go by spider_poison's old Power Rankings, out of those 10 cards 3 of them are A's (Captain America, Silver Surfer and Venom), 5 of them are B's (Abomination, Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man and Thanos) and 2 of them are C's (Dr. Doom and Red Skull). Three above average, 5 average, 2 below average. Seems like a pretty balanced distribution to me.

Truth had an audio interview on the old site with the designers talking about the Marvel set right before its release. Craig van Ness said he "highly recommended the Captain America/Raelin combo."

As a fan of GI Joe since 1982, I would love this. But it would be kind of amusing, since Renegade already has two different GI Joe miniature lines (for the miniature game and the RPG). Maybe they could repurpose some of those? I don't know the scales offhand.

The truly terrifying part is that Renegade also has the licenses to Power Rangers and My Little Pony...

The scale for the minis is off as I mentioned before. One is too small and one is too big.
I think you would be under selling the Power Rangers as a squad.
