Favorite Movie(or Movies)

Wages of Fear
Alien
Blade Runner

Alien and Blade Runner are ultimate classics. I had to wiki Wages of Fear. I just put it on my queue. I did see the remake, however (Sorcerer).

Here are a few I liked off the top of my head.
Gummo
Mulholland Drive
Zardoz
Excalibur
Donnie Darko
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Lord of the Rings.
2001:A Space Odyssey

Clint Eastwood westerns
Tarantino flicks
Chinese kung-fu flicks
I love sci-fi and fantasy but 99% of all movies of the sort are crap.

The new Casino Royale was pretty good.

Every so often, I watch portions of Excalibur with my sons. though because of the violence and nudity, they don't see much of the film, they love it.
It's timeless and each scene is classic, but my favorite is
Uryens knighting Arthur.

Did you ever get the chance to see Wages of Fear?

Just watched WALL-E last night, and even though its a kid movie, I enjoyed it very much. Definately one of my favorite Pixar movies.
That movie made the little sensor in my brain that love cute things just short out. Adorable movie. "Define: Dancing." D'awwwww.

Aside from that, what I like about WALL-E is that WALL-E is beat up the whole movie, and it's played for laughs. It works, you laugh at him getting thrown, electrocuted, burned, etc., because he just gets up and comes back for more. But then near the end, he gets hurt badly, and suddenly, it was never funny at all.

Yeah, I might sound like a little kid saying this, but I'll never get tired of Pixar. The story lines are great, the humor and the animation are top notch. IMO, it's much better than DreamWorks animations.

You don't need to worry about sounding like a kid, ABOM. The desire to sound grown-up on these matters is a childish notion, I think. And I also think that everybody will say that Pixar, as a whole, is better than Dreamworks, really.

Aliens 1 and 2

This weekend I bought all four Alien DVD movies at about $6 each.
When I watched Aliens, it was amazing to see the added footage! Never knew about it and that it was added into the movie.

The colonist footage was interesting, but I could have done without.
The robot sentries footage was a shock!
The game Space Hulk seems to have been inspired a lot by Aliens. Wonder if the Overwatch mechanic was partly based on the robot sentries in the film? Was that footage available or known back then?

Apparently one of the scripts for Alien 3 was supposed to have even more alien vs. human battles than Aliens. Too bad they decided to instead kill off all the main characters and only have one alien. >_>

"Nothing is more childish than trying to be an adult." ~ johnny139. Maybe.

I've been wanting to see WALL-E for a while now. It seems kinda arthouse, but, well, you can't go wrong with Pixar, can you?

I think that was C.S. Lewis...but you're close. :p

Wall-E is a great movie. I especially like the first third or so that plays like an old silent Charlie Chaplin film (set in a post-apocalyptic city, that is).

I'm especially looking forward to Toy Story 3. I hope they are able to keep this sequel as strong as the first two.

Listing favorite movies is always tough, because there are so many I really enjoy for many different reasons. Some of my favorites include (in no particular order):

Braveheart
Remember the Titans
Rudy
That thing You Do
Saving Private Ryan
Apollo 13
The Color Purple
Lord of the Ring trilogy
Star Wars (I like them all)
Napoleon Dynamite
Forest Gump
The Wall (Pink Floyd)
No Country For Old Men

Yikes, I could keep going for a while.

I find myself watching HBO's Band of Brothers a lot. It's probably my most watched set of DVD's. Not truly a movie, but I think it qualifies.

I have a lot of favorites they are as follows: Monty python-any one of the movies
The Rock-a awesome shoot em up in Alcatraz
The Matrix-a ground breaking action movie with a great but confusing plot
Saving Private Ryan (or anything Else by Spielberg) -mind-blowing war scenes and great characters
Forrest Gump-just an all round good movie

Army of Darkness - plot holes as big as semitrucks but the best horror comedy of all time. All hail Bruce Campbell. Drink every time he says "Baby".

Boondock Saints - Simply excellent

The Usual Suspects - Best plot twist EVER.

The newest Batman movies ... Finally Batman movies that do not suck.

The Day After ... Old but makes you think. (Not to be confused with "The Day After Tomorrow")

Dune and The Children of Dune. Think Machiavellian Luke Skywalker.

My top ten:

1. Star Wars, A New Hope

2. Star Wars, Return of the Jedi

3. Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back

4. Lord of the Rings, Return of the King

5. Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring

6. Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers

7. Star Wars, The Phantom Menace

8. Star Wars, Revenge of the Sith

9. Star Wars, Attack of the Clones

10. The Patriot

Honorable Mentions to Braveheart, Fanboys, Dark Knight, and the Spider Man movies.

A friend of mine and I were talking on the way to work and we concluded that you can tell a lot about a person by his 5 favorite movies and why they like them. So I thought I would play.

1. Princess Bride - The classic heroes quest, the romance, the witty sarcastic humor. All in all, a great flick from the 80's

2. Lost Boys - A great guilty pleasure movie. It is a film about vampires that does not take itself too seriously, but still creates a character arc for everyone.

3. Up In The Air - I travel a lot, so I was attracted to the premise. When watching it I was impressed with Clooney's acting as well as the writing. It is refreshing to see a story where the male worker is treated with respect by Hollywood.

4. Return of the Jedi - A great arc, exiting story, compelling music. To this day I still want to experience the felling of anticipation of "what is coming next?", an ability that writers today seem to be unable to master

5. Lord of the Rings - Jackson version. A great epic well executed. You can really get wrapped up in the story and characters, and feel like you are part of something bigger...that you care about.

Honorable mentions: Across the Universe, Dr Horrible, Free Enterprise, Tombstone, Nausicaa, Transformers, The Movie (1985), ID4 (guilty pleasure), Highlander, Aliens 2 and Predator 1.

That was an interesting exercise...I enjoyed it.

1. Office Space - Hilariously quotable movie about software engineers in a cubicle farm. By far my favorite movie ever.

2. Gran Torino - Race-fueled drama that espouses the traditional values of hard work and sacrifice despite the changes in modern life.

3. Up In the Air - Made me think a great deal about career success versus personal success, especially since the movie left it "up in the air".

4. Starship Troopers - Old-school Scifi Movie with action and Denise Richards. What else is there to say?

5. Black Hawk Down - Action filled movie with some exploration of the morality of military intervention and personal loss.

Princess Bride is definitely a great movie - but I feel like there's so many movies that are great it's hard to pick the best.

I agree that you can tell a lot about a person based on their top movies - just comparing ours it seems that you watch movies more to get involved in an alternate world/story whereas I watch them as commentary on the world I live in (or at least try to take those messages from them).

As I started to put the list together, I realized that I couldn't get this to only 10 movies.
  1. Monte Python and the Holy Grail (top of my list)
  2. My Cousin Vinny
  3. Caddy Shack
  4. Stripes
  5. Goldfinger (the best Bond)
  6. The Godfather (1 and 2)
  7. Casablanca (great classic movie and a great romatic movie)
  8. Star Wars (the original)
  9. Jaws
  10. Jurassic Park (the original)
  11. Forrest Gump
  12. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (quirky movie, but it is fun for all ages)
  13. One Flew over the Cukoo's Nest
  14. Rocky (1 - 3) (Rocky 1 and 2 are classics. While Rock 3 gets campy, it is still great fun.
  15. The Terminator (the original)
  16. Raiders of the Lost Ark (the original)
  17. The Sixth Sense
  18. Enter the Dragon (maybe the best martial arts movie)
  19. Home Alone (great to watch with kids)
  20. Romancing the Stone (if you have to watch a romantic movie, and you already saw Casablanca, this is really good)

OK, my top ten, in no particular order...

The Empire Strikes Back (actually, this one is probably my favorite)

The Two Towers (despite departures from the book, easily the best of the LotR films)

Spiderman 2 (Doc Ock gets my vote for best movie supervillain ever)

The Big Lebowski (my favorite Jeff Bridges role of all time)

The Cowboys (one of the Duke's better performances...and the climax is a bunch of kids carrying rifles...try to make that movie post-Columbine!)

Tombstone (best 'modern' western, period)

Spaced Invaders (a cherished childhood memory...a must watch!)

Toy Story 3 (who would've thought Buzz and Woody could evoke an emotional response!)

The Longest Yard (original Burt Reynolds version)

Back to the Future (any of them)

An honorable mention goes to Captain America, which, to me, is right up there with Iron Man in regard to the kind of quality comic book-translations we've seen since Marvel took over production of their own properties in cinema. I can't wait for Fox and Sony's licenses to expire!

Wow, I forgot Spiderman 2 and Tombstone
S2 did indeed have one of the best comic book villains of all time as far as acting goes. Tombstone has some of the best quotes of all time http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108358/quotes my favorite was anything by Val Kilmer. His delivery was great

Tombstone has some of the best quotes of all time
Yeah, my friends and I sometimes lock others out of the house when they step out to smoke, then demand a movie quote (from a specific movie, chosen at the moment the door is shut) to regain entry. Tombstone is one of the most common (and easiest) to pull quotes from.

Oh, and "You're no daisy..."
