Dominion.

I have Dominion, Alchemy, Intrique, and Seaside all, so I'm only missing one expansion. I came up with an idea how to randomize the deck but still have it stay playable. Anyone that has combined all these knows that you can end up with some combo's of cards that just don't make sense and have nor purpose. Instead now I do a partial random, partial picked card kinda thing. For an example in a 3 player game: Deal out 4 cards to the table for a base set and then 10 more cards to each player, setting the rest aside. Each player then picks 2 cards and places them face down on the table, putting the other 8 away based off the original 4 cards. Now you have your 10 cards that are still random but much more likely to be useable together. Of course this can change to tastes, could do more random with 7 cards on the table and each player just picks 1, or however you want to do it.

Also with original plus Intrique you can realisticly play 8 players on one table even though the book says 6. Just add 1 more draw pile for each player over 4, also add 1 more to be depleated for every 2 people. Adding Seaside and/or alchemy you can even really go up to 10 people as long as you make sure that some of the extra cards are different types of victory points. In this case I would drop the rule about running out of Provence cards ending the game, just treat them like normal supply cards.

Finally since I have all of these, I change everything so I have everything in alphabetical order and in just the 3 big boxes. I use the Alchemy box just for the randomizer cards and Seaside place mats. Anyone that has that set probably had the same problem about storing those that I did and this solved that problem for me.

Dominion is a great game, Probably now my 4th favorite.
5th: Kingsburg
4th: Dominion
3rd: Descent
2nd: Smallworld

2x Dominion last night. Trounced the family for the first game.

2nd game, my wife bought an Estate because she only had 2 copper and forgot about the moat. I teased her about it once her turn was over.

She won, 43-42-24. Darn Estate :(

Played two games of Dominion with Intrigue last night. Ive been getting my wife to play this a lot more. Its a game she really likes but doesn't enjoy the shuffling. Last night it helped out that I had everything all set up when we got home.

Of the two games we played, one of them ended up being my most fun experience with the Intrigue cards. Our setup was: Pawn, Steward, Shanty Town, Feast, Remodel, Minion, Torturer, Mine, Trading Post, Harem.

My ending deck was: Minion x3, Shanty Town x2, Pawn x2, Trading Post, Steward, Silver x3, Gold x2, Harem x6, Province x4, Duchy, Curse

I had a lot of choices with my cards. There was numerous times Id have to take a second and play through some of my choices in my head before making the final decision. My favorite play was Pawn choosing action/buy then playing Shanty Town while sitting with 3 xSilver/Harem. Minions were mostly used for coin unless I was able to play one as my last card in hand. Trading Post was what really helped the deck fire. I believe I won mainly because of how early I was able to get Trading Post to start working for me.

I just recently discovered Dominion and gave it to my family in the States for Christmas. I haven't gotten to play with any expansions yet (except online, but not all the cards are there), but I'm looking forward to trying out Prosperity and Alchemy when I get back. Amazon had an action where you got the base set and those two expansions for a reduced price.

We're playing with just the base set at my school in Germany, and we've discovered a ton of ways to mix it up even with just the base deck.

One variation is to use all the cards in the base set, but only as many as there are players (4 players - 4 moats, 4 markets, etc.) I think this is by far our favorite variation.

We also stacked them in piles according to costs, shuffled them, then laid them facedown. You could choose a price to pay and then try your luck on which random card you got. That was fun too, but then the focus was more on gold and provinces because of the risky factor of buying the other cards.

Another thing we tried was making it to where only one of each card in play was available to buy until every card had been bought at least once. That made it interesting too because the exclusivity increased and if a player wanted something that was already 'sold out,' they might have to buy some less-than-ideal cards to get to it.

I played a LOT of standard Dominion (mostly on BSW, but plenty face-to-face). But apart from the Intrigue cards that made it to BSW, I've not played much Intrigue, very little Seaside, some Alchemy and no Prosperity. I didn't get bored with the game - I just put it to one side until I found a carrying solution that could handle more than 35 Action cards (the limit on my shop-bought carycase.

This week should see me finish - after about 6 months of work - an oak carrying case. Almost ruined lots of work last night when I discovered that you really, really have to drill pilot holes if you're screwing into oak (because otherwise you shred brass screws, and if the heads shred before they are fully in, you've got a HUGE problem). But all that's left to do now is to screw the top half on square, then add the catches and handles.

I have two photos of the work progress here (together with pics of the prototype, big enough to hold just the base game):

The finished case will be big enough to hold everything up to and including Cornucopia (if you don't know, I'm not authorised to tell you), but no expansions past that. So I'll have to stop buying (but 130+ different actions will be enough, won't it?).

I've also been supplying people with perfectly-sized sleeves. I think I imported almost 100,000 card sleeves from Korea (and have just 2,000 left).

That's a beautiful box! But how do you find the card set you're looking for without labels?

The slots are separated by about 6mm, and the cards stand vertically. As all the cards have their title printed across the top, it's simply a matter of looking down into the box at approximately 45 degrees. Much better than the usual "tabbed dividers" solution.

Better pictures of the finished box:

Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!

Still needs some trimming on half a dozen of the slots (not *quite* wide enough, so some elbow grease with a small file required), I want to put on some sort of restraining strap to prevent the lid opening by more than 95 degrees, and I want to try to use my bandsaw to cut some fine veneer that will hide the magnets used on the compartments in the top right.

Which I should have done today, instead of just lazing round the house.

Wow, this is a beauty. I wish I had the patience and skill required to do something similar. Kudos on a stunning case.

In all honesty I don't think I'd over-emphasize the "skill" part. Everything I've done I have learned either from the woodwork lessons I had at school aged 11 and 12 (here in the UK we don't teach youngsters useful stuff like woodwork any more), time spent on the internet and actually *trying* stuff over the last 12 months or so.

A good 80% of the end result is all about going slowly and carefully (the old carpenter's maxim being "measure twice, cut once", because Foxtrot Uniforms are hard to fix), and being prepared to be patient with the finishing - lots of coats of Danish oil with lots of sanding before and during. I spent a lot of time on this (having graduated from pencil boxes with sliding lids only a few months before) but I'm really pleased with the end result.

I've done all the fettling now (apart from a strap/chain to stop the box opening too far - still trying to work out how to attach one when I made no allowance for it in the design), and have used it a couple of times too. Having all 100+ actions arranged alphabetically makes selecting the required ten for a game that much easier. Though IF I was doing it all again, I'd probably make a few changes to the layout (as well as making the whole thing 20mm shorter).

My next project is trolley/butcher block for my kitchen. Oh see how quickly my projects become mundane once 'er indoors gets a say in what I make!

I just played my first game today. Bought it hoping that 50 bucks would be well spent and it didn't disappoint! This game easily reaches my top 5 list. Even if you are hesitant on getting it because of price it is well worth it. Can't wait to get some of the expansions.

Just started playing this 2 weeks ago and I love it. Great, fun game. I also discovered the online game and who did I run into there... Necroblade! It was nice to play with someone from this community there (although he trashed me pretty good :( )

Scapers are everywhere!

I have two questions. With 80 dollars, which sets should I get? How do you play online in english?

See, the more interaction the better, though if you have no defense cards the game can drag on.

I wouldn't recommend the Big Box simply because Alchemy is probably the weakest set - it doesn't mix well because you have to add a resource card for many of the kingdom cards to work.

Regular + Intrigue is really fun though as they blend very well with random mixing.

Anybody know what the Walled City card is. I suck at browsing BGG. I saw it over on Isotropic. Rumor has it that it's a new promo card.

It is the new promo card (available at Origins, GenCon, and later from BGG) celebrating the ten year anniversary of Carcassonne winning the Spiel des Jahres. (Carcassonne - Walled Village... get it? :D )

Can someone explain the value of the Loan card from Prosperity to me? I guess if you want to trash some copper late in the game, it's nice, but really, is that worth having a treasure that's worth 1 coin instead of (at the same price) silver that's worth 2? Or am I missing something?

I feel similarly about the Chancellor card from the original set. Sure, there are times where I know my deck is cold and shuffling up is an advantage, but it's hard to see many situations where that's worth making the 2 coin action-dependent, instead of just buying a silver and always having the 2 coin.

Why would you buy the Loan late? I always buy it first to thin out my coppers.

Try the Chancellor / Stash combo.

So, it is just to thin out coppers, then? Is this really worth it over just having more silver? I suppose it depends on the rest of the cards in play.

Is stash in one of the other expansions? I only have Prosperity. It did occur to me that Chancellor/Counting house could be awesome, especially if you also have a Bank in your hand, but getting all of that (along with a Festival or something to make it work) at once takes quite a bit of luck.

A lot of cards really depend on what else is available, but thinning coppers is a pretty big deal.

Try a counting house / festival / coppersmith combo some time. It's pretty sick. I remember buying 3 Colonies at a time with that.

Stash/Chancellor is fun, but not terribly strong (and notably weaker in Colony games). Still, it is about the only thing Chancellor is good for. dok, you hit on using Chancellor to dump your deck when it's down to garbage...but it's hard to determine sometimes and you still have to draw Chancellor at the right moment. Getting good at forcing the reshuffle when gaining 'engine' cards and not doing so when buying green makes Chancellor better...but still not usually worth it (incidentally, he would also work with a Counting House combo...but you need yet another action).
