D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-25*

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-19*

Personally I think D3 was introduced as a wave to increase the dungeon crawl theme of the current Scenarios, rather than the warfare theme of previous core 'scape. Characters such as the Ogre Pulverizer and the Horned Skulls fit dungeon theme games, but can be used in a war setting, if you ever feel like fielding multiples of dungeon fodder against your opponent's Q9. :D

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

Updated again with the Ice Troll.

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

Is it me or is that a mini troll?? It doesn't even look like it needs a DW base.

Yikes...

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

The troll is so short! It seems to be a bit bulkier than the Feral Troll, though. It's the same size as Raelin? That makes them about the same size as the average American, wouldn't it?

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

One of the D&D experts in one of the other threads said Ice Trolls are supposed to be small, for trolls. Can't remember who it was, probably buried somewhere in the Wave 3 navel-gazing thread.

I think the Kyrie are *slightly* larger then the average American. I would guess the WoA (or KMA or AE) would probably be better American analogs.

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

It makes sense. A smaller body wouldn't have to produce as much heat to keep itself going. Not to mention food would be scarce in colder climates, so the troll probably evolved that way. Or am I reading into it too much?

Your reading into too much;)

I think so. I as a long time player of D&D and other fantasy games, you learn the default answer to most questions is "It is magic"

In D&D, things have resistances and immunities that are based on "magic." Gargantuan White Dragons are immune to cold just as easily as a little mephit.

His stance is why he is on the new base. It would be a stretch to fit him on a classic base and theres no way he would fit on the new small/medium base.

My opinion is that this figure should be medium and on a classic base. I think that the new bases have forced this guy to be a large. This is the first sizing problem caused by the new bases. I hope MoH is bigger or we will be seeing a pack with one large and two medium figures.

I agree, he defiantly doesn't look "large".

Thanks for the comparisons Hogg, I have been waiting for something like this for a while. I am waiting eagerly for Moletnclaw.

oh, and:

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Hogg again.

:/

That ice troll figure looks great! I really like him. I wasn't too sure about him in other pics but in your pics I love the sculpt! I think I like the D&D paint job a lot better though. :-(

In another thread (Ice Troll pre-discussion I think), I mentioned that I encountered Ice Trolls alongside regular ones in Baldur's Gate II, and the Ice Trolls were really tiny, definately no bigger than my party members while the regular trolls were pretty big by comparison.

BGII was 2.0 though, and I heard they became more of a large creature in 3.5, but apparently it was mainly in bulk, and they remain a very smallish form of troll.

There also used to be "Splitting Trolls" that started out Feral Troll sized, then split into two ice troll-sized trolls when killed.

Splitting Trolls, eh? Methinks I smell the second room in a dungeon crawl.... Although, the point totals wouldn't match up. You would lose a 90 point figure, but gain two 85 point figures in return. You could always use your imagination and make them 45, though.... :D

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

I'm not a big fan of what I am seeing. While I'm not trying to say that an Ice Troll should be 10 feet tall (never having seen an Ice Troll), I'm just not excited about this wave. To me, the Ogre Pulverizer looks like a Happy Meal toy. The Mezzodemons also don't look like HeroScape figures and I can't figure out how they are ranged figures.

I may just get a full set and maybe a few Bugbears and Orcs.

But a smaller body has a larger surface area:volume ratio, so it loses heat faster. ;)

Thanks for the pics Hogg. I've been wondering about the Ice Troll's size.

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

Ice trolls in D&D are smaller then there brethren. Often right on the line of medium and large.

Everything looks good.

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

D&D minis figures run various sizes but sizing issues throughout their run as a product have always been a problem. Some figures are really small by comparison to others which are insanely huge. There is a difference in people in real life but some of the differences go way off. I think the overall scale for D&D minis is slightly smaller and these pictures do a very good job of showing this fact by comparing them to classic 'scape figs. The Death Knights look kind of dinky next to 4th much less anything larger.

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

Dang, I really hope they do a bit of resizing... the baby death knights seem kind of silly.:D Also the ice troll is very small to what I expected.

Resizing would mean new molds, new molds mean spending more $$$, more $$$ means less profit, less profit means they ain't gonna do it.

So save your hope for something else. ;) If they'd resize, they might as well make us some new classic sculpts....

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

I actually don't have much of a problem with the size of the Death Knights. Undead creatures magically kept together without skin or various muscles and other parts should probably not be much bigger in size to the average.
Perhaps with bits missing they should be a little smaller. Of course neither should they have to be sitten on a toilet.

As for the size of the Ice Troll...after being shown the globs of paint on bases that some have called goblins... I'm not to surprised by it. Disappointed - yes - surprised - no.

Find the large figures in this picture:

You know what they say about trolls with big hammers?

Spoiler Alert!

Re: D3 DDM comparison pictures *Updated 10-21*

Alright you've finally convinced me on this one. I love the Ice Troll sculpt, but he should be medium. Unless it's for immunities and not size.
