Cwidje's Custom Creations

After a decade's absence, my creativity has returned. I plan to first revise my old Speed Custom Contest entries to be more flavorful and balanced, with new designs to follow. I'm targeting the range of "playable in VC Delta but not busted." I expect to miss regularly, but iterations are a key part of any design. I also plan to focus primarily on Historyscape, since our benevolent overlords plan on neglecting it.

Speed Custom Contest Entries, Circa 2013

Glad you're posting these, thanks for entering the contests

I like the Bull Teraxxian. Territorial Dispute seems pretty powerful, he might need a bit of a price bump but only playtesting could tell for sure.

The Enraged Spirit is a cool idea, it gives the Samurai some thematic filler. Seems like they could have more than 0 defense considering how much they cost.

Demented dedication causes all kinds of turn interruption craziness right now though, and it can theoretically trigger after a Samurai is killed by Lava or Wannok at the end of the round, which is rather odd. I think it would make more sense to word it like the repulsors EMP power, to limit the amount of crazy corner cases.

Mabe something like this?

'After a Samurai you control is destroyed by a normal or special attack and an Enraged Spirit is placed on the battlefield, roll the 20-sided die. If you roll a 15 or higher, the attacking figure must immediately end its turn and you may immediately take a turn with that Enraged Spirit.'

Cool fig! I have a somewhat similar idea with my Souls of Vengeance. One thing I hadn't considered, but could also be an issue with Eternal Servitude, is Zombies. If a zombie destroys a samurai, what gets placed there?

A potential fix I'm working on is, instead of replacing the figure, place the spirit on a previously empty space within x spaces of the destroyed figure.

I really like the idea of a Common Hero for this type of unit. I just may borrow that...

I hadn't thought about the Zombies problem... :ponder: When in doubt, a d20 roll-off is my go-to solution.

I like Reckless Reconnaissance and I like Diversion, but I really really dislike Frenzy on this card. It seems really jarring and doesn't make sense to me, thematically. Frenzy has been used before on the Venoc Vipers and the Aubrien Archers; in both cases it implies a sort of raging passion, which doesn't fit the sculpt or other powers--Recklessness is not the same thing as nearly animalistic rage.

Perhaps an "Overextend Attack" type deal... :ponder:
That's a step in the right direction. I was thinking of something involving movement and attack, possibly followed by receiving wounds and/or being destroyed.

I'm pleased to see you posting your contest entries. As a judge for the speed contest I was excited to see so many different designs come through.

Bull Teraxxian
I like how restrained the design is; despite the cost the stats are reasonable or even low. Great personality too. Useful set of abilities overall, though Territorial Dispute is a bit questionable. The original designer's rule of thumb was that attack dice are only rolled for attacks (though that rule wasn't hard-and-fast, and it forced Lolth's Wrath to be a special attack when it probably shouldn't have been). Thus it would be a bit cleaner with a d20 roll instead of attack dice.

Enraged Spirit
The concept here is strong. I like units that start the game off the battlefield, and you have a unique mechanic to bring them on. Demented Dedication is interesting, but at the very least it causes a turn stacking problem. That is, if my first Tagawa Archer kills your Kozuke, you replace it with an Enraged Spirit and take a turn, where it kills my Tagawa Archer, which I then replace with an Enraged Spirit and take a turn to kill a different Samurai... At this point all of those units are currently taking a turn. If I then kill your Goblin Cutter with an Enraged Spirit and you Scatter, how long does their no-hit-zone ability last? Can my next Tagawa Archer attack one? The story gets all the more complicated when you add special attacks into the mix. If you kill Pelloth after he deals one of three hits from Lolth's Wrath, can he continue to deal wounds? Turns-within-turns is messy territory that the original designers avoided.

Agent Jenkins
Reckless Reconnaissance is a really cool power, and it combos nicely with Diversion. Diversion is a very scary power; both Kravs and Nakita would love it. That's probably handled by the high price tag, however. I don't see this guy being of much use outside of an Agent build; too expensive.

Whitetooth Raiders
Making these guys into Undead is a surprising but not unwelcome direction. Nice reuse of Blood Frenzy -- it really brings out the shark theme, as does Water Strength. Cursed Blood-Oath is fun, but it has some problems. If you place it on one of your opponent's three 4th Mass Army Cards, how many times would you roll for Blood-Oath? By the strictest rules, at most 4, since each 4th Mass card only handles 4 figures. Less so if that player was placing dead 4th Mass on that card. You would need some (mildly complicated) common card language to extend this effect.

Krycis X-23
I like the simple design. He would be terrifyingly strong a lava map; I highly suggest changing Chain Blade to place figures on adjacent same-level spaces, as other move-opponents powers do (Chain Grab, Talon Grab). He's still worth the points with that change; that Life/Defense combo is solid.

Life Sister Joana
I like the combo of abilities you used here, though I fear it's just not potent enough (especially not for the points). It's already painful enough to spend a turn to use Bringer of Life, but the turn spent attempting Rejuvenation is going to be probably a lost turn. Blanks are just too hard to roll. If you made it skulls it might be useful, but even then the turn cost is steep.

Harbinger of Death
Again, I like the concept of the unit that does not start the game on the battlefield. Makes it very limited in draftability, but that's ok. I really like how potent you made this 1 Attack/2 Defense unit, and I really like the tough decisions your opponent has to make in whether or not to attack it.

Jo-Rok-Ba
Accelerated Metabolism is cool in concept, but it runs into problems with powers like viking Spirits. Where does the figure go, and does it provide a bonus? You should use Metabolism Markers instead. He looks like a real terror, but 6 Life/3 Defense won't last long on a melee non-bonding hero. He has a lot of attack potential but he won't last long enough to make use of it. I suggest pulling back Accelerated Metabolism (max 1 per attack) and dropping his cost.

Dhaunaste Barriar
I like the name. Infectious Plague is really interesting, but has some problems. If you place it on a common squad figure's army card, when does the adjacent roll happen? It is no longer associated with a figure but rather a number of figures (all of them, depending on your interpretation). Putting this on, say, Goblin Cutters would decimate a melee army. You should limit the marker to only Unique Heroes. It feels a bit odd to me that you want to infect your own figures (it's too much effort to infect an opponent's, and it really doesn't gain you anything to do so), but he's a villain.

The Forest Musician
Call of the Wild is the key power on this unit. (The other powers are cute, but not 140pts worth.) And it's really powerful, though it will probably never actually hurt anything. It pretty much just means that your opponents will do all they can to avoid standing next to trees. Which, depending on the map, could provide a huge tactical edge, or nothing at all. Interesting as a niche draft unit, but not much beyond that.
