Re: It's Over
Finished up with OG-Blaha today.
Interesting draft pool. Here's how the draft went:
I knew this game would largely be decided within the first Round, and more specifically the 1st initiative and who won it.
That is, if he wins he can hit my SZ from height on Turn 1 and likely get 2 kills on Templar before I get a turn...then follow it up with a Turn 2 getting 2 more shots off in my SZ. On the flip side...if I win, I get my Templar out in front, onto height/shadow and limit the damage he can deal, and if I survive chase him down with my charging assault.
I won Initiative.
This was massive. It's not game decisive as the dice still have to go your way, but getting my Templar out in front meant that I for sure would get at least 1 attack off at Syv if he took shots at me. And OG went all in on Syv. So, I got into position, lost only 1 Templar and sent in 2. I decided at this point Syv's value had just gotten a bit lower since I'd be able to keep him engaged while I reinforced...so I decided to just keep 1 Templar attacking Syv while the others charged into the Startzone and began smashing Stingers. Considering Round 1 was all Syv...I figured it'd be a good thing to get into the SZ and start tying up the Stingers before they could develop into the map. Additionally, I get extra defense when attacked from Adjacent squad figures...so I felt it was necessary to engage as many stingers as possible to keep him busy while I continued to reinforce. And it worked. I was trading 2:1 most of the time which really gave me a solid lead. I was able to stay on height and defend a LOT of attacks which allowed reinforcements to develop and then crash in throwing 6 attack dice on stingers. problem was that his final squad did work and cleared out a whole squad of Templar before the end of the Round. So in the endgame it was 2 Stingers, Retiarius, Eldgrim vs 3 Templar, Ice Troll, Rhogar. Overall I felt pretty comfortable, but I really needed to win initiative to avoid the Stingers just clearing up the templar and then potentially blowing up my heroes before they could activate. Luckily, I won that initiative switch which killed the stingers (stealing an OM) and then charging down Retiarius before he could get a turn.
It ended up not looking as close considering I had both heroes full health and a whole squad of templar left...but it was a super close game and very narrow margins for error. Great game OG!
