C3G Comics Guide and Theme Review

In celebration of the new Trinity release and the Trinity themselves, a small change-up for this one.

Above you'll see the results of the polls and all the designs (including the two new Batman cards and the new Wonder Woman card).

For this round please leave one vote on the best piece of media with all three of DC's most popular heroes, preferably working together. The votes will be added to all 3 of their threads in the iconic must reads.

Then if you want, let us know your favorite versions of each to run together, so which design of each makes your favorite Trinity army or leaders of a bigger JL army.

I haven't read a Trinity centered comic yet. There are moments in the DCEU that are sheer awesome/epicness, but I can't recommend either of the movies as a whole, so I'll have to say the Justice League animated series for me.

A team I now realize I have to try out is Superman (Justice League), Wonder Woman (II), and Batman (Justice League - II). And they even come out at an even 1,000.
They are each probably my second favorite design of each character. Superman ties them together with his Trinity power, a little loosely but still. He is a very on theme Superman. Wonder Woman in full warrior mode looks really fun, I'm sure she can really bash some heads. Low cost, calculating Batman is fantastic. Being able to play the nerve pinching, outsmart the opponent Bats for under 200 is great.

It's hard to top the Justice League cartoon for sure. That show really nailed its characters. And JLU afterwards of course!

That looks like a fun version of the Trinity army. The first Justice League versions of each is a classic 1000-point army, though on the weaker side. Batman (Utility Belt), Superman (II), and Wonder Woman (I) also seem like a solid 1000-point trio though they lack any direct synergy.

Cheating a bit, but something I'd like to try some time is Wonder Woman (I), Superman (JL-II), and Batman (Outsiders) with Lois Lane in there to round it out for 1000.

One thing I think is neat with the Trinity is we have so many units for them that you can really mix and match in a lot of combinations. Hoping to eventually see a Justice League Dark version of Wondy that goes with Occult Batman, for instance (I believe MrNobody has plans).

Aquaman is near the top of my list of characters to get into, of course I used to dismiss him when I dismissed most of DC as a kid (I doubt any hero has been the subject of more jokes). I've hardly read any comics with him in them, but I am excited to get into the lore and all the underwater realms. I hear there is some pretty good stuff.
I can credit the Injustice games with getting me onboard with him being an awesome character (I'm pretty sure the developers went out of the way to make him one of the most hardcore characters in the game). I also liked the Aquaman movie.

For designs I'd say I is good, II is better, III is epic.

Nothing I can think of for another Aquaman, although I would love to see a giant sea monster of some sort for the Atlanteans to command. I know Namor has Giganto.

Aquaman (III) (aka JL Aquaman) is fire. Love that design.

I don't have a lot of great comics experience with the character, unfortunately. Most stuff he's in seems ... fine?

Biggest thing I want is underwater terrain. :-D

Dang, no love for Aquaman lol.
I'll mention real quick that I've heard Geoff John's New 52 is a pretty good starting point for him and showcases Aquaman being a badass, so that may be the best bet for new readers, but I haven't read it yet so I can't say for sure.
I'm also curious to read the Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dan Abnett runs.

Well I'd probably just say Transformers: The Movie, since I haven't read any of the comics. The main thing I remember is the movie features Unicron, the awesomely terrifying Galactus-type destroyer of the Transformers franchise.
My other rec is that one episode of Armada when Optimus combines with Jetfire.
Looking these up, I guess this explains why I was familiar with some amalgamation of Hot Shot/Hot Rod in my head way before I'd even heard of Bumblebee.

For designs, I'll probably have to give it to Soundwave, but there are a bunch of cool ones.

Future stuff: Starscream. Unicron (probably done in whatever way Mogo and Ego get done, like a story card/army card that corresponds to a map hopefully). Ironhide, Ratchet, Hot Shot, Hot Rod.
Oh, and of course Grimlock.

Transformers: More than Meets the Eye / Lost Light is probably the best work of Transformers fiction I've read at least.

Last Stand of the Wreckers and its follow-ups are also top notch IMO.

I like Transformers: Generation 2. Like it's probably not objectively very good, but it's so gloriously 90s.

Transformers vs Gi Joe is worth reading just for how Ratbat-crap insane it all is. Most of the other Gi Joe crossovers have been ok-ish but nothing special. The Dreamwave one is nigh unreadable due to it's terrible artstyle so... if you like to see train wrecks there's that I guess. Dreamwave was one big train wreck as a company really.

I've been meaning to check out King Grimlock since Grimlock as Conan sounds like a hell of a concept, but I fell off of keeping up with things after the IDW reboot. The new mainline comic just didn't do anything for me.

Most of the Crossover comics have some merit just on being weird "can't believe this is actually happening" things.

Agreed on all counts.

For Black Widow, I'd recommend the 2014 solo series (Black Widow Vol. 1: The Finely Woven Thread). I haven't finished it, but it's a really fun book. It has her doing what she does best, going on missions and trying to make up for her past.

My introduction to her was as the "The most dangerous woman in all of Europe" in Marvel 1602 (probably my favorite graphic novel).
She was cool in the first issue of the 2010 Heroes for Hire, which had Misty Knight recruiting various street level heroes to do various jobs depending on the issue. That'd be a really cool Misty design actually.
She also has some fun classic adventures with Daredevil, but I'm running out of recs here.
I remember she was in the first Marvel knights series but remember nothing about it.

I also loved last year's Black Widow movie, exploring her past and her cobbled together spy family. It was also pretty grounded until the end, which was refreshing as I like solo hero stories where the world isn't always at stake.

edit: my favorite is the 170 point generalist unit.

For Hawkeye, Fraction and Aja's run. It's pretty well known, but I'd recommend Hawkeye Vol. 1: My Life as a Weapon to anyone getting into to comics as it's simply one of the best I've read. I also loved the duo's work on Immortal Iron Fist which is what led me to this series. The characters are real, the art is amazing, and you still get the comic book hijinks Marvel is known for. The whole thing is collected in Hawkeye by Fraction & Aja: The Saga of Barton and Bishop.
Also, if you read all of that, or even if you didn't, definitely read Kate Bishop's Hawkeye solo series.
Other fantastic comics with your favorite archer (at least a version of him):
- Old Man Logan and Old Man Hawkeye set in an apocalypse where the villains won and there are almost no heroes left.
- Marvel Universe vs. The Avengers, which is part of a fun series detailing everyone succumbing to a virus which turns everyone into cannibals (i.e. Marvel zombies but not). It says the Avengers, but really it's just Clint. There are two more about Wolverine and The Punisher.

My favorite is the og 150 point design

Hawkeye is a really fun character in Al Ewing's New Avengers run, some of my all-time favorite Clint moments there. Feels like it reconciles the Fraction Hawkguy take with the more traditional spin on the character.

I'm also big on his stint leading the Thunderbolts in Busiek and Nicieza's Thunderbolts runs.

Not sure I have a lot of really solid Widow recs.

Late, but I also heavily endorse More Than Meets the Eye.

I think Sinestro Corps War only involves Yellow and Green. Rage of the Red Lanterns is the first intro to the Blue Lanterns, and it’s a great read. After then you’ll see Ganthet and Saint Walker pretty regularly in Blackest Night then New Guardians. I love that entire run and would recommend it all in order (the whole Johns-Tomasi era is peak Lantern Corps, for me).

The Green Lantern animated TV series also involves Saint Walker and Ganthet to a lesser extent, and is a great adaptation of the universe.

Ah, touche. I get confused about what was introduced in which story between Sinestro Wars and Blackest Night. Any Corps fan should really read both regardless.

Yeah I'd probably say the Blue Lanterns start in Rage of the Red Lanterns.
Then Agent Orange and Blackest Night.

Saint Walker is definitely my favorite.
An uncommon Blue Lantern to fill out the standard lanterns would be cool, and maybe a central battery.

One of my favorite DC characters. Like a lot of DC heroes, I still haven't read much of him, but I've heard good things about his last few recent series.

My main rec is for sure Justice League/Justice League Unlimited.
It was cool to see him in Snyder's JL movie, but he was only in like two scenes.

edit: My personal favorite is the classic 300 point army mover.
