Amherst NHSD battle report thread

I'll go ahead and start a battle report thread. It isn't really detailed, but it's a start.

I went 1-4 with Kato, 2 sets of both squads of Ashigaru, and the Tagawa. The glaciers and trees really caused a problem with my order marker placement. I was more worried about the 1 defense for both Ashigaru squads than line of sight on Kato. Ended up both line of sight AND 1 defense really caused problems for me.

First match was with Tiberius and a Arrow Grut army with Raelin 1. The Ashigaru's glass jaw had them falling all over the place. Mimring was brutal. The Tagawa went down too quickly. I enjoyed meeting and playing you Tiberius.

My second game was against my son. (I traveled all that way to get beat by my son?! ) He was playing the first army I was thinking of playing, Skahen, Carr, Krav Maga, and 2x Microcorp. Long story short we ended up starting the last round with a lone Yari adjacent to one of the last two Krav Maga on the board. I got initiative, but couldn't kill the first. I went down on my son's first attack. My son ended up 1-4 as well, but he finished ahead of me on points.

I can't remember the name of my third opponent . I think he isn't registered on the site. I could be mistaken. The only one I recognized when I got there was Shieldcrusher, and that was only after I mentally added the viking helmet. The only thing I remember right now about his army was it had Skahen. We took a break after the third round. I picked up what I thought was going to be my only victory in a basketball game. That reminds me. I ought to ice my knee and get some ibuprofin. That floor didn't agree with my knee.

My fourth was against Shieldcrusher. My third game facing Skahen. Those 10th Regiment of Foot are annoying. It was a fun game. Ended up with Kato stuck on lava at the end of the second turn with one wound left and three 10th Regiment figures adjacent trapping him there. I was thinking that he was going to get stuck there and go down from the end of round lava damage roll, but one of the 10th Regiment's finest finished me off. It was a fun game. There were some timely die rolls both ways on that one. I had a lot of fun on that game.

Scorpion5, sorry to be the one to pick up my lone win to force your defeated status. I was starting to think going winless would go well with my title. I definitely had some lucky rolls that came at pivotal times. I about crapped my pants when you rolled engagement strike when I moved my last Tagawa Samurai adjacent to your last Nakita. That one could have easily gone the other way. Ended with the squad of ninjas against Kato.

I had a great time. I wish I had more time and/or lived a little closer to you guys. I'd love to get more games in with you guys.

Agent Minivann, it was great to meet you and your son, we should totally switch avatars as you look more like mine and I look more like yours.

Anyhow, as Agent Minivann pointed out, he was my first match on an ice board, he was using an ashigaru army with Kato and Tagawa samuri as muscle. My army was Krug, Mimring, 2x arrow gruts, 3x swog riders, isamu and raelin. There was alot of synergy in both these armies but 1 defense doesnt cut it against a fire line special for 8 hex rows. I was able to fly mimring over and start blasting groups of ashigaru with decent rolls, and my arrow gruts where able to individually pick a few people off. Finally the samuri came out and killed both Mimring and Raelin (with some losses). Eventually Krug and Isamu got involved and managed to mop up the rest with a game ending Isamu assassinating Kato from height.

My second game was against ManTrainChooChoo and his heavy grut army on highways and dieways, the roades really helped his army out too. He had Grimnak, Nerak, Zetacron, Raelin, and 3x heavy gruts. He was all melee but solid defense and synergy and his damage output was higher than mine, with the exception of Krug who seemed to be whiffing rolls for me (9 dice, 1 skull!). Mimring was able to kill quite a bit and was a real threat, taking down Grimnack and a couple of gruts. Krug killed raelin and a few more gruts. A swog and some arrow gruts killed Nerak. Zetacron never got into it and didnt have to. I lost this one as the rest of my forces were overrun by the superior stats of the heavy gruts.

Next was to turret rocks against Michelle and her agent/minion of Utgar army. I liked her army alot, it had Agent Skahen (a first for me to face), Nakitas, Zetacron, and 2x minions. I started off with Mimring as usual and managed to fry a couple of Nakitas that she grouped up. I was rolling well again this game. Then I took a few shots at Zetacron but his 4 defense held against the dragon. I charged Skahen who had advanced up to try and use her special abilities but moving in took away her stealth dodge and she fell to the dragon shortly. Then the dragon finally got in Zetacron's face and ate him too. It was a slaughter up to this point. I had a grut kill the last Nakita up on the height of turret rocks, and the dragon turned his attention to the minions who could only kill one or two since thier defense was so good. Finally Krug came into it and after taking a few wounds started eating minions. She killed Raelin and my dragon and wounded Krug and killed a few gruts. I was 2-1.

Next up was me versus Jacob J P on another ice board and my first Q9 fight of the day which was surprising since over 50% of the armies had one. He was using Q9, Kaemon Awa, Raelin and rats. The orcs could pretty much ignore the rats. I moved Mimring out who got trashed by Kaemon Awa and Q9 pretty early with only dealing some wounds to raelin and Kaemon. In came Krug, my real chance of winning this match up, hoping to march him over, take out what was left of Kaemon and go eat Q9. Unfortunately, I hurt Kaemon (who had high ground) but whiffed on the roll I needed to kill him costing me an extra turn there which cost Krug his life. So I was stuck trying to kill Q9 with some arrow gruts, I managed to kill Raelin and do 2 damage to the armored foe by the end of the game but not enough ooommph to get it done. It came down to that roll with Krug vs Kaemon and it didnt happen. I was now 2-2.

Last match was against Anthony on my third ice board of the day. Closest game ever. I lead off with mimring against his Q9 and stinger and raelin army. Mimring is mowing down stingers like crazy and tries to wound Q9 but with only 1 skull, that isnt happening. I get into his start zone with Mimring and start trying to wipe out large rows of stingers, but due to some substandard rolls and raelin's help alot more survived than they should have. Eventually they managed to drop the dragon, and then I made a mistake with Raelin and got her into a fist fight with a stinger who had height. She ended up lasting longer than I thought she would but not long enough. After messing around with swogs and gruts for a while and deciding the raelin protected stingers where too tough, I sent in Krug to kill raelin and then Q9, which he actually did and then was killed by stingers. My swogs and gruts managed to pick off his remaining stingers and that left a swog, grut and isamu versus Isamu. His Isamu was a dodging fiend. Luckily so was mine as it eventually came down to Isamu vs Isamu and he was the first to fail a dodge roll. I ended with a 3-2 victory, about what i was expecting. Got some really nice flocked terrain with fallen pillars as a prize and got grok riders as an extra prize from the roll off.

Nice report, Minivann! It's amazing how much those LOS blockers can hinder Kato and Co., especially on the competitive maps.

EDIT - also, nice report Tiberius! It appears you and I are up at the same time doing the same thing.... the early bird gets the worm!

Here's my battle report - complete with dice statistics! I decided I wanted to keep track of how my dice were actually doing, to see whether or not I could blame my performance (good or bad) on my dice rather than skill or some other factor. Anyway, I played:

Major Rat Frenzy 2.0
Major Q10
Aubrien Archers x4
Rats x2
Otonashi

I thought it to be pretty well balanced, though I would've rather went with the Q9 version. But, my friend wanted to use Q9 and Isamu, so I went with Q10 and 'Nashi.

Game 1 - Michelle (Minions x2, Skahen, Nakitas, Zetacron on Embattled Fen)

Michelle is one of the other Y'town players, which was all but inevitable since we had 8 people there. Her army was a hodgepodge of solid units and this made for my closest match of the day. My rats did their thing early, though I lost 2 to Engagement Strike. I lead out with Q10 to counter Smoke Powder, and he pretty much made short work of most of the Agents. Once the Minions started coming, Q10 fled to the other side of the Fen, trying to pick off Minions from 8 spaces out. The Minions endured though, and killed a bunch of Aubriens, eventually wiping them all out. Q10 continued picking them off though, and it came down to one Minion vs. Q10 at full health. The road allowed the Minion to catch me, but his attack was blocked. I broke engagement and ran away like a pansy machine and shot it down. Great game though! I rolled defense like a champion in this one... I shudder to think what would've happened if I didn't...

Win, Skull % - 54.54%, Shield % - 58.82% (!), Initiatives Won - 2/10, Frenzy Rolls - 1/6

Game 2 - Weesel99 (Kaemon, Raelin, 10th Foot x4, Isamu, Otonashi on Ice Blossom I think)

I played Lucas at last year's NHSD, and he rolled me. This would be no different. He flew Raelin to the turret in the middle and his 10th followed. It took my Rats 2 turns + a bunch of Scatters to catch them, but they were eventually tied up. My Q10 started trying to kill Raelin, but wasn't having much luck. I tried to pick off whatever 10th soldiers freed themselves from engagement, but eventually the rats fell. I brought out my Aubriens, but I guess the battle already seemed lost to them - their Frenzying spirit just wasn't there. I got completely rolled, crushing any chances I had for a decent finish. My dice were about average, except Frenzy, and I won most of the Iniatives, so chalk this one up to bad play by me, good play by Lucas, and maybe the map.

Loss, 179 losing points, Skull % - 46.88%, Shield % - 34.5%, Initiatives Won - 5/7, Frenzy Rolls - 0/6

Game 3 - Zach (Cyprien, Sonya, Iskra, Rechets, Marcu, Stingers x3 on Highways and Dieways)

This map is usually great for Rats, but I had a crazy Stealth Flying vampire to deal with. I led with Q10 with the idea of avoiding both Lethal Sting and Chilling Touch, and he led with the Esenweins. I got many, many, many attacks on Cyprien and Iskra (before Rechet summoning), and couldn't kill them. Iskra rolled 3 skulls everytime she attcked a Rat, getting back a life. She got the Summon finally (5th try I think), but the Rechets didn't have much impact. Cyprien flew around, eating rats and an Elf or 2, until Q10 FINALLY killed him (it took much too long). I still thought I was in good shape, but that's when my dice started to fail, and he blocked 2 skulls regularly with 3 defense Stingers. Somehow this game just got away from me - I'm not really sure how (unless you count that the Aubriens, again, were disheartened. No Frenzies). Good game from Zach, and I was 1-2.

Loss, 350 losing points. Skull % - 46.35%, Shield % - 29.63%, Initiatives Won - 7/11, Frenzy Rolls - 0/12

At this point, I was really mad at my Archers, who had only Frenzied one time in 23 attempts. That kinda hurts your chances.... I decided I wasn't even considering putting a marker on Q10 until I had Frenzied a couple of times. Also, it's worth noting that my friend Tony and I got rolled in a 2-2 basketball game against my friend Adam and Agent Minivann. Minivann has some mad skillz, and my jumper was about as bad as my Frenzy rolls.

Game 4 - BrownsFan82 (Skahen, Nakitas, Krav, Raelin, Gorillas, Isamu on Ice Blossom)

I told Brownsfan that I thought this map was lopsided to one side, and suggested we roll the D20 for that side. He graciously gave me that side without the roll, though it may have been his undoing (but maybe not). I led out with my rats and, against conventional wisdom, my Aubriens. Even though Q10's special would've beaten Smoke Powder, I kept my word. The Rats survived forever, rolling great defense, and my Aubriens claimed the middle turret. They actually Frenzied a couple times, but I think all of that (and more) was cancelled out my Brownsfan's insane Smoke Powder rolls (probably 60-70%, no lie). However, arrows got through eventually, and the Aubriens killed the whole board, thanks to my Rats staying around forever, and Brownsfan's lack of a Special Attack.

Win, Skull % - 47.87%, Shield % - 33.68%, Iniatives Won - 3/7, Frenzy Rolls - 4/18

Game 5 - No David, No (Braxas, Q9, Krav, Eldgrim on Fire Isles)

I was a bit unsure about this matchup, but not too worried since he didn't have Raelin. However, my dice were about to atone for the prior couple of games, especially the Aubriens. As you'll see, my dice were insane this game, and No David's were terrible. Braxas came out first. I tied her up initially with Rats, then charged Otonashi to get a hero engaged to her, and the extra 2 attack dice. Go Otonashi! Q10 and the Rats felled Braxas (Q10 rolled 4/4 skulls his first attack and Braxas whiffed - that helped), and the Rats killed 2 Krav with elevated attacks of 2 skulls. The remaining Krav and Q9 took care of Q10, but the Aubriens, having tasted victory in the last battle, had the fire in their eyes. With 2 rats still engaged to the Major, they had no fear. The first round they got a Frenzy, and poked through a wound on Q9. The next turn, they got another Frenzy and poked through another one. Then one, unafraid of the lava, ascended the high ground and rolled 2 skulls, and Q9 whiffed. Dead robot. They charged down to Eldgrim and cleaned him up, with another Frenzy along the way. Yay dice.

Win, Skull % - 73.58% (insane), Shield % - 42.47% (nice), Initiatives Won - 1/3 (lost the first round, which is good), Frenzy Rolls - 3/6 (finally)

Final Stats - 3-2, 529 Losing Points, 15th or 16th place. Overall dice stats:

Skull % - 51.14%, Shield % - 38.57%, Iniatives Won - 18/39, 46.15%, Average Iniative Roll - 9.575, Frenzy Rolls - 8/47, for a disappointing 17.02%

I was above average for the day on attack and defense, and below average on my D20, so about even. However, my dice swung from game to game, and my worst dice game by far was 3, which I was looking for an explanation for, so there you go. Also an interesting note - my two losses were the only games in which I won Initiative more times than the opponent - maybe it's good to go last? :D Thanks to southwest ninja for organizing a fantastic event, and Shieldcrusher as well for running it, it was a blast! Hope to see everyone November 29th in Youngstown!

Agent Minivann your 3rd match was against Ben, or better yet brownsfan82.
That sounds more like it. Now that you say that I was thinking of the guy in the Browns shirt that was sitting next to me during round 2. I asked him if he was brownsfan, and he said he wasn't a member here. Seeing his army posted is starting to bring it all back. I got beat pretty bad.

Round 1, my first HS Tourney game.
Nervous? No way! :D
Excited? Yes!

I played a great guy, Josh Baker who brought:
Major Q9
10th foot x2
Krav Maga
Gorillinators

My army went down fairly quickly by his Gorillinators and the 10th.
I tired to hide Raelin behind the ice but he came around and targeted her first taking her out early. From there it was difficult to get Sonlen into place for Healing my Big Green.

Round 2
Next up Mike Phillips with;
Major Q10
Major Q9
Raelin (oldschool)
Laglor

Mike moved up Q9 and Raelin, I moved up the dragon and Raelin. I took out Raelin early then started to pound Q9 into the dust. It wasn't easy. Finally I was surrounded by spare parts and facing Laglor's reload with a few wounds to go before death.
The final battle came down to my three stingers and Laglor. Lucky roll and I won (my only win).
Thanks Mike for a great intense game!

Round 3
Next up, Lori and those blasted Blastatrons!

Big Green surrounded and picked apart post haste.
Good plan Lori!

tourneymap3.jpg

Round 4
raudulfr shieldcrusher (or boB if you prefer ;) )

Agent Skahen
Krav maga
10th foot x4

Sorry no PIC. sniff.

The Krav were a great on this map. They moved to the middle quickly and took up positions that were hard to get to (for Big Green anyway). Big Green went down with a full belly of Agent Skahen!

Great jorb!

The bigger, stronger kids, who knew how to Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive and.... Dodge.

Okay, so here's my battlereports.

round 1 vs. Craig. I lost
round 2 vs. Jaret. I lost
round 3 vs. Darin (my friend who has played maybe 3 times previous to this tourney). I lost
round 4 vs. Dennis (who beat me in round 1 last year at Canton) I lost
round 5 vs. AgentMinivan. I lost
prize table: I WON!!!! two booster packs and Agent Skahen. It was no surprise that I actually won the LAST prize available from the table.

Note to self: maybe play test the army prior to the tourney??? or at least don't use 3 squads that you've never played AT ALL in the tourney??
Regardless-it was great to play and meet many other players!
