Figure Storage Foam - Would it be worth $25?
In at least 3 other threads, I mention my figure storage concept, with foam etc... this is what I was talking about. I gave up working on this because I acquired a bunch of tackle boxes and was happy, till I noticed that my figures were still getting bent up the way I was putting them in the tackle box... so I went back to redesign my figure storage concept.
THREAD EDIT: I ran into problems, like an insanely high quote on the foam... so I might as well buy my own CNC foam cutting machine for what they quoted me. If I can sell about 90 sets of this foam for $25 a set... including shipping with in USA, then this will pay for almost %75 of the machine. Would about 5, 4 foot long strips of this foam be worth $25 to anyone? I know people pay $100's for that break away cube foam... but I am not sure this is worth $25 to heroscapers... even though it is a cool storage method. You would have to cut the foam to fit your box... be it cardboard box, plastic storage drawers, or a canvas carry bag... I may sell a size to fit large boxes, that would be about 5 figures deep, ![]() and another size that would fit the large square snapware bins at about 3 figures deep. ![]() ![]() Last edited by Draconious; December 6th, 2008 at 10:53 PM. |

Re: Figure Storage Box 1000 - Should I sell a few of these?
It's cardboard? No, thanks. For that price, I'd want something more durable.
And you bring up a good point about most people not having 1000 figures... |

Re: Figure Storage Box 1000 - Should I sell a few of these?
Well I have looked for plastic boxes of similar size... and that would make this thing cost about $100.
Also, the foam will also be sold seperately, so you can use it in whatever box you have. It has to fit 1000 single based figures because for every 2 double base figures you put in it takes the space of 5 singles... and since dragons are so large, they take up the space of about 5-10 figures... So really it is meant for someone with about 500 figures with room to buy a few more sets. |

Yeah if it's stronger than cardboard I'm interested.

I was thinking of spraying on a plastic coating to harden it a bit... but this stuff is over $120... although its way more than I need so maybe I can get less.

Re: Figure Storage Box 1000 - Should I sell a few of these?
Can't you just make one that is smaller to accommodate a smaller collection? 1/2 or 1/4 that size? 1 of each Unique and 1 of each common is only 266 figures, so something that holds 500 would probably do for most people.

Re: Figure Storage Box 1000 - Should I sell a few of these?
Remember dragons and double spaced figures take up more than 1 figure of space.
The foam can be applied to ANY box... just cut it to length. So the box is not really the product, the Foam Figure Strip is. I just figured if I sold it with a box, and some card protectors or something... it might sell better, to those that dont want to plan how to cut the pieces so they fit their box. Idealy, there is a Radio Control Car bag out there with drawers that slide out that are just deep enough for the foam strips that would be totaly awsome to use for these... however the RC Bag is 50 to 100$ depending on the size... ![]() http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXRUF6&P=7 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXTTD8&P=7 This is another possibility... http://www.shopbrodart.com/shop/cb/p...aspx?pgID=1831 However the card board box I will be using is actually far stronger then it looks. Only reasons I do not want plastic myself, is punctures will eventually make it look like crap and water may damage it, reason I want to do a coated box. There was going to be a smaller box next to the big box, in the render above, however at the last minute I realized a 4" deep box is not quite enough height to fit the cards where I planned to, so I have to reshape the smaller box... It was about a 250-300 figure box... I am still looking for a box that works as a %50 size box. Not many like this are deep enough, so the foam strips may need to be cut in half height wise as well wasting even more space since only 1 double space figure will fit where 2 were supose to. I would buy one for my warhammer guys, and my scape. What program do you use to create that 3d image?

AutoCAD... and looking for a job doing it...
Are the warhammer bases the same dia/thickness as heroscape figures? The concept of this foam is that the foam grabs the heroscape base, but it can work for other figures as long as their bases are similar in size... the foam will give if its a little bigger (Which is how the dragons will fit). They cannot be much more than 1/32 of an inch smaller though, or they may not stay put. I forgot this... The large 100 figure box can be reduced by moving the inner left end in about 6 or 7 inches... leaving space for a dice tower or a large area do just drop the dragons and their wings in... the large figures do not really need to be mounted in the slots since their parts are thick enough to prevent bending, with the exception of Torkul, and Grimnak Last edited by Draconious; November 22nd, 2008 at 09:46 PM. |

Re: Figure Storage Box 1000 - Should I sell a few of these?
Added the smaller box I mentioned to the image.
Aapparently the next box up was only an inch longer and inch taller... all that was required 5.5" deep, fits the cards (in sleeves). ![]() Too lazy to draw the lid... looks like the bigger box's lid. Last edited by Draconious; November 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 PM. |
