Repaints by hexplex? Updated 10/7/08

After poking around the site for a couple of months I have decided to take a stab at doing some repaints. I have not painted nor attempted to paint a miniature since I was 12. The last one I did was my Minotaur for a AD&D campaign. It turned out horrible! The next year we started playing this new card game called "Magic." And so here I am 16 years later.

Initially it was difficult to decide which fig to paint. I'm so neurotic about all my collections and didn't want to mess anything up, so the chosen figure would have to meet three criteria:

1) In need of aesthetic help.
2) Not so detailed that it would frustrate me in to quiting.
3) I can easily get another one.

I chose DŁnd.

I had so much fun that I've taken on a few more projects.

Agent Skahen

While painting this last night I realized that I need; smaller brushes, thinner paint, a magnifying glass, and some new x-acto blades.

D&D Mini for Custom

The fig is a Boneclaw Impaler from D&D Against the Giants. I'm working on a card.

What do you think? I would love some constructive criticism. Thanks for your time.

Nicely done! Definitely a different feel to the figure.

Re: Repaints by hexplex?

Pretty good work! I would think the most complicated paint would be Dund's head, other than that as you said it's not that much detail. My only suggestion I can think is to think about orbiting his eyes, give it some depth rather than a ping pong balls glued onto his head look. I'd probably do more with them as well, giving him either a highlight or two.

The eyes do need a bit more to them but I like it.

Re: Repaints by hexplex?

I like it, maybe you could make the eyes black or red. (or whatever color you want)

just some ideas.

Thanks everybody for taking a look and leaving some critiques. I agree that the eyes need something, I'm just not sure what. They're the source of that crippling stare so I want them to be hypnotic.

I've added some new stuff to the first post. Check it out!

I think with the Dund fig either yellow or bright green would make the eyes pop out and draw your attention to them. Just my suggestion.

These look very nice, great job

For Dund's eyes, I think using a light green or yellow wash might produce an interesting effect, sort of like his eyes are glowing.

Re: Repaints by hexplex? Updated 10/7/08

The lich looks really good and Dund is excellent, well done.

Painting eyes can be a bit tricky, but I think she'll look OK on the battle field. We're looking at a 200-400X magnification here, that is merciless. The smallest mistake will show up exaggerated too.
If you'd want to do something about it though, try to get a black dot (pupil) inside the white first and then 'shave' of some of the white from the top and bottom, making it more elliptical instead of round.

I picked up a 20/0 spotter yesterday after work, so pupils are forthcoming.
