As this was our first game ever, we wanted to focus on learning the rules and having the "epic" battle promised. We chose a large map which looked like a lot of fun. The set-up was challenging for the first time. We had to rebuild a few times, and even broke a few water tiles (which had previous damage). Glyphs were randomized from the entire collection I had and proved to be a bad idea.
On this map, we thought it was pretty obvious where the power was: the island. Four glyphs, highest ground on the map, cover available, and clear views to 90% of the map if you had range.
Venom and Spiderman both dashed towards the island with their webs. With initiative, Venom made it to the first glyph on turn two. With a squad of enemy snipers moving in, I was hoping for something useful. Instead, randomizing the glyphs gave me an artifact. Worthless. Thankfully, the one sniper in range was easily dispatched.
On turn 3, Venom continued his quest to find a useful glyph and hold the high ground while reinforcements moved into position. The second glyph was Range +4, which, while useful, didn't help Venom. Jraz08 made his first big move of the game and stormed the island with a squad of Snipers and Spiderman. The Snipers uncovered two glyphs (another worthless artifact and initiative +8 ). Spiderman got the jump on Venom and was able to defeat him for the first time in history.
My reinforcements were finally in position. I didn't have the island, but KMA, Q10, and Raelin were together in a great place with high visibility. I now had control of the most useful glyph (defense +1) as well. These units did not move much the remainder of the game and made the once powerful island a death trap.
JRaz needed something. I had power position on my side, so he tried to do the same on his. He began moving toward the ruins/glyphs on his side. I sent Su-Bak-Na and the Stingers to meet him. We had a mutual scare when one of his glyphs was the Massive Curse. We both got lucky and all units survived. Su-Bak-Na closed the gap, and after a series of bad rolls, Jraz lost Spiderman, Raelin, and Shiori. Things were looking bleak for him.
I became too eager to engage, and rushed towards his starting point. He still had a hero waiting to move who could turn the tide of battle. After an hour and a half of game play, Captain America finally made his first move. With all three order markers and his special attack, CA made short work of Su-Bak-Na and several stingers.
Q10 was creeping around the island towards JRaz's starting point. His special attacks were able to finish off Kelda and his final snipers before Captain America could come to the rescue.
At this point, Jraz was down to his final hero, while I had Raelin, KMA, several stingers and several vikings. Even though I felt like I was in a dominant position, I knew a few bad dice rolls would be all he needed to get back into it. All of my units were in one large group, and CA's special attack could easily rip through them.
Jraz approached around the east of the island, using the valley as cover, and was able to finish off the stingers. Dodging heavy fire from the KMA, Captain America valiantly charged towards Raelin. In a last ditch effort, he swung...and missed. Exhausted, he wasn't able to dodge the bullets, and fell at the feet of the KMA.
Final Thoughts: Even though the result didn't really matter, JRaz should have won this game. I feel he drafted better for the terrain of this map. He turned over 5/8 glyphs, all of which were fairly worthless. 6-7 times in a row he rolled no successes, on attack or defense. He capitalized on my aggressiveness with Venom and Su-Bak-Na. Luck wasn't with him. His only major mistake was keeping Captain America out of the equation for a majority of the game.
The map was a poor choice for us. It was way too big for 2p and us using larger armies didn't change that. We did have a blast and learned most of the rules, though, so it was well worth the effort.
