I use ESUN PLA+ from Amazon. It's a little more flexible than regular PLA and seems to print better.

I've used ABS for some items, but it usually gives me a bunch of trouble. ABS it better at higher temperatures (like in a car). I've also used clear PET. It's best for items that touch food and water because it's pretty much the same material as water bottles. My son used it to make an insert for his nalgene bottle.

PLA. It depends on your printer but in general ABS isnt very good for tabletop terrain in comparison. You have to run it quite a bit hotter and still I had adhesion and warping issues. The other types of filament can work but PLA is probably best for tabletop terrain. As far as brands go, I hear good things about hatchbox but me personally have gone through over 50 lbs of melca brand and 3d solutech brand 1.75mm pla and have only had issues with about 2 of the 25-30 rolls. You're about to have some great fun.

Re: Index of 3D Printed Stl Files

One more question - maybe a 2-parter. Is Slic3r the best program to interface the printer and computer or are there other options that work as well or better? Also, am I correct in thinking that I would only need Blender if I'm going to design my own or adjust an existing design?

I have two 3d printers. One uses Repetier with Slic3r. Slic3r turns the .stl file (or .obj file) into a g-code file that tells the printer what to do. Repetier controls the printer (it doesn't have a display--I run it through Repetier), so it takes the g-code file and controls the motors on the printer.

My other 3d printer uses CURA. CURA does what slic3r does--turns an .stl file into a g-code file. Then the Ender 3 display computer takes that g-code file and controls the printer. I think I like CURA better, but they both work.

To design/modify 3d models, I use Blender (or CREO if it's an engineering file). Other people like TinkerCAD, Meshmixer, or Zbrush, or other programs. Blender has a steeper learning curve, but it's free and it has a lot of capability.

Creality Ender 3. Amazon's Woot! site had them on sale yesterday for $160. Figured that was a good enough price to finally get into printing. What's nice is that my wife kinda wants one too to print stuff for her daycare class.

Re: Index of 3D Printed Stl Files

NP but I would have bought one for sure at that price. $230 is still not bad.
I had never even heard of Amazon Woot! before.

Amazon Prime Day Ender 3 $169.99

About $10 more than what I bought off of Woot!

Re: Index of 3D Printed Stl Files

Ender 3 is what I have. I had just printed off a Baby Groot for a client and the very next print the bed seems to have warped.

But, just got a glass bed replacement in today! Facebook has a several great Ender 3 support groups.
