Battle at the Border (4/19/08) Battle Reports
Everyone feel free to post your battles, I'll put the standings and stats in this post as soon as I get a chance.
Congrats to our winner To Serve Man. EDIT: Stats and Standings (note: the software, if you got a bye, awarded a win with no points, also at the end of round 4 when we were forced to break we had 7 drop out, but added a 38th player - Emu - so there would be no bye for the final round) Click here for links to all the maps that were used. Only one truly remarkable game for me - I won, though I feel really bad about it.
It was a match against Phineas - I was playing a Frenzy army, with 3 squads of aubriens, 3 squads of venocs, venoc warlord, isamu, and theracus. Phineas had a counterstrike army - mostly (if not completely) samurai. I've never seen such bad luck in my life. Phineas completely whiffed almost every defense roll (with all skulls most of the time), and I frenzied over and over and over. The game was over in 20 minutes, and I was down 2 squads of venocs, and a single archer. When the game goes that poorly for someone, you can't help but feel bad - especially if it's you doing the pounding! Oh well, that's how the dice roll!

I had a game like that at the Florida Frenzy against himsati's (oddly enough) mostly samurai/Einar army. I rolled reasonably well and he rolled (I think we counted) a whole 3 shields all game (all on the same roll). He was a very good sport about it, though, and I had a game of poor rolling myself. As you say, that's how the dice roll.

One of my matches to remember was the 3rd round vs Mosby. We both fielded Nilfheim and Krug! The difference was that he had Q9 and Isamu while I had 3 Arrow Gruts and 3 Swogs.
We played on Road Rampage and both headed for the bridge. At 1st I brought up some Gruts and Swogs, but once his Nilfheim entered the frey Krug charged in. Krug took a few wounds and then took out Nilfheim and was followed in by a Krug on Krug smash fest. My Krug had height and eventually got to 7 wounds. His Krug couldn't stand the 10 attack die onslaught, which left him with Q9 who did manage to take out Krug, but my Arrow Gruts were too many for him to handle The road helped getting my Swogs up quickly to back-up my gruts, plus I had the Comman Attack +1, so was generally getting a few Attack 3s and a few Attack 4s on Q9. My Nilfeim didn't make it into the frey. The match would have made for a good head table narration (a la the World Series of Poker  )

Here is my battle Report. I ended up going 5-0.
My army was 4th Mass x 5, Marro Warriors, Morsbane and my sidebar was Raelin (Rotv) and Isamu 1st Match- Match 1 was against Dylan. He had a frenzy based army that had EOV, Aubriens, Gwyn, Venocs, and Venoc Warlord. His army went down pretty quickly, he never got more than 1 frenzy in a turn and with only 2 squads of each common it was over quickly. Our match lasted probably 20 minutes and I had around 370 points remaining. In this match my Marros ended up killing almost his entire army. My 4th Mass and Morsbane pretty much just chilled 2nd Match- Match 2 was against Dan. His army had Theracus, Dan, Major Q10, Marcu, Guilty and ... (I forgot the rest) This match also was over very quickly. We started on the Map that had a large bridge high in the center of the map. He started by flying Dan to the Center with Theracus and having Dan take shots at my army. My marros did most of the work and this was my game where Morsbane on his 1st attempt rolled a 20 and autokilled Q10. Although ironically soon after Dan rolled a 20 to autokill my Morsbane. His biggest mistake was never activating Q10 and relying on Dan early on with his only 1 attack per turn. This match lasted 20 or so minutes only. This game my 4th Mass did not even get in a single attack, they just hung out in my starting zone all game. Matches 3-5 will be up later, probably tomorrow 3rd Match- Match 3 was against Nyys. I knew going in that I'd be facing a tough opponent who also was 2-0, and I was proven correct. Nyys was fielding an army Romans x 2, 4th Mass x 2, AE, Marcus, and MBS. This is an army that has won past tournaments so I knew it would be a tough battle. When preparing for the Tournament the 1 unit that I most feared was the AE, they were the entire reason why I brought Raelin. With my mixed 4th Mass army, a 1st Round Drop/Initiative Win/Grenading could beat my army before I even got a turn. This was the only match the whole Tournament where I chose Raelin over Morsbane. As feared his AE dropped 1st turn and he also won initiative. He played it conservative and did not drop all 4 next to my start zone so he only was able to grenade with 1 or 2 of his AE. Thanks to Raelin I survived the grenades without a loss. His AE did very minimal damage before I took them out, giving me an early lead. I next focused on taking out Marcus and MBS in order to avoid his boosted troops and reducing the amount of attacks he got per turn. My marros and a few 4th Mass died taking down the heroes but overall I was still pretty comfortably ahead. The tide changed though when he moved up his 4th Mass and they began to mow down my own minutemen. His 2 squads proabbly killed 3.5-4 squads of mine. Thanks to my lead I was able to sustain heavy casulaties while slowly eliminating his ranged units. I knew that even if I was left with 1 4th Mass I could take down his Romans with 4 Move since they would be unable to get adjacent. Ultimately I was left with 3 4th Mass vs 2 of his Romans. I lost 1 due to being careless but the last 2 made quick work of his Romans. 4th Match- Semi Final Match was against Monkeyclops. He had an army of 3x Arrow Gruts, 3x Swogs, Krug, Nilfheim. I was not very concerned with the gruts/swogs but knew any army with Krug and Nilfheim would not be easy. The map we played on was Divided Highways which I did not like since all the roads made his already fast army ridiculously quick. He began by sending out his Swogs/Gruts and I sent out Morsbane and my Marros. Having 2 expensive unique Heroes he wanted his Gruts to take down Morsbane. Early on he was able to capture the movement glyhp meaning his Swogs were commonly moving 13 spaces and his arrow gruts were up to 11. He was able to get 2-3 wounds on Morsbane from the Gruts but my Marros were able to quickly able to kill all 3 Swogs, making the Gruts little more than a nuissance the rest of the battle. The Round ended and I put my 1st 2 order markers on Morsbane to make a dash for his start zone to try to pull off a negation. By getting the road bonus plus his range of 6 Morsbane was able to get into position to negate Nilfheim, unfortuantely my 1st roll was a 15 which was heart breaking to miss by just 1. His next turn he attempted to finally kill Morsbane but a 2 shield defense roll allowed him to remain at 1 life. My 2nd order marker was also on Morbane and this time he did not fail as he rolled a 16 to negate the White Dragon. I was quite confident at this point with basically 5 squads of 4th Mass vs unboosted Gruts, Krug, and a negated Nilfheim. I was feeling pretty confident at this point until Krug proceeded to smash through my army killing around 3 squads of 4th Mass by himself. Finally Krug went down and it was 2 squads of 4th Mass vs a healthy but negated Nilfheim. Nilfheim killed a couple but with only 1 attack per turn he was out of his league. I ended with 1 full squad of 4th Mass left. Match 5- Championship Match My final Match was against Ollie. He had 3x of Deathreavers, DW9k, Nakitas, Dund, and Isamu. Like me he had Morsbane but he decided to leave him out. The map was Arctic Highways, a map that we both seemed to dislike. Each starting zone was within 6 spaces of a glyph meaning we each easily got one on our 1st turn. Additionally, whoever won initiative was able to easily claim 3 of the 4 glyphs. I was very glad to finally play against an opponent with the Rats. Anytime someone is willnig to clog up half of their total start zone spaces with units that are almost no threat to kill my troops I am all for it. He sent out his Rats while I sent out my Marros and 4th Mass. This was little more than target practice for my troops and the Rats were dropping semi quickly. My main focus was on his Nakitas. They were the only real way he had of attacking me multiple times in a turn and therefore the only real threat he had to my army. He had the +1 unique attack glyph meaning the nakitas were lethal when they attacked but they also dropped very quickly. After his Nakitas were down he brought out his Deathwalker. His Deathwalker died against 1 attack die although things were looking bleak for him even before that happened. With a 300+ point lead I figured it would be fun to negate his Dund but sadly this was the only match where Morsbane did not pull his own weight. After a few failed negations I decided to just end it and used the 4th Mass to kill him. Ironically Dund ended up doing the most damage to my army.
