I'll third the War Mammoth idea, we need something to beat those damn castle doors down!

I can see why some don't like the unpainted aspect. The unpainted AotP figures look "cheap" next to painted HeroScape figures. I bought AotP sets with the plan to paint the figures, but they are still sitting in the boxes.

So, with that said, I needed a nudge to get back into painting figures. Early in HeroScape my son and I did several repaints of existing figures to make customs. The picture below shows some repainted 4th Mass and Grimnak (never cared for the gray dino - green or tan look better in my opinion) we had custom cards for - repaint was before 10th Regiment was available. We used artist acrylic paints, but I'll have to look into the Speed Paint people are talking about.

My stance on tournaments was less a stance and more a concern/goal.

I think it’s very important that we the established hardcore community make it a goal to allow new players to enter tournaments with what’s officially available and not several years out of print. I’m for multiple events that allow more units but I think whatever the “main event” is it should be exclusively 2.0 units and whatever gets a reprint down the line assuming that everything goes well.

I just don’t want people to learn about a heroscape tournament and feel cheated because they entered blindly and learned that if they wanted to compete they needed thousands of dollars worth of out of print figures (or access to a 3d printer if that’s allowed).

And on the topic of blank/modular point values, I’m personally against it. For people who own everything it’s can encourage diversity in play, but it can really wipe out casual players. It’s tough to be slowly buying into a game and when find out that the army you were working towards has been changed or made functionally unplayable. It can really kill interest in playing at all.

If people need to get the old figures in order to compete than the designers will have failed at their goals. They are trying to walk that fine line between making new stuff that is competitive without making the old stuff obsolete. VC did it quite well since the game went out of print. As did the original designers (with a few exceptions) for, oh, 13 waves or so?

I mean unless the new set is very powerful it would be unreasonable to assume that every figure in it is an A or B tier unit, it would also be unreasonable to assume a new player would be able to tell which units are good enough to play competitively. In a pure 2.0 setting they will get crushed due to inexperience most likely and see that they had undervalued certain units and overvalued others, or perhaps missed certain synergies. In a mixed unit setting they’re likely to feel that they lost because they played against a bunch of old armies piloted by experienced players but they’ll likely view loss as a problem with the guys they brought more than an experience gap.

I’m not against using old units, I just think we need to brand the new 2.0 scape as what everyone plays and what you should expect to play. 1.0 units should be for “side event” stuff for fun. It’s still there, we still play it but we try to nudge new players towards the new stuff if we can. I think the power level of new units is largely meaningless because it’s a lot more about appearance than it is practical reality. We just try to avoid situations where either people get excited for units that are out of their price range, or feel that the hobby as a whole is out of their price range.

Now it might be fine to do primarily mixed tournaments if new players make connections with old ones and have routes to get their hands on old units without having to buy them on the secondary market, but I imagine that’s not how things will work early on. I just don’t want to risk new player growth by making the hobby seem more intimidating then it has to be.

It has nothing to do with Hasbro, Avalon Hill, or the War Council. I hope that the War Council makes Heroscape 2.0 the battle for all, for all time; not the battle for this particular, limited way of playing the game.

Seriously, it is a beast of our own making and the parameters are always subject to change, interpretation and different applications across different events and event organizers.

Ironing out the way tournaments are run at this particular event or that particular event in the new era is definitely a secondary consideration, at least imho.

To piggy-back on this suggested unit... I really hope they have an "Old Man Drake" unique hero unit planned to release at some point, the obvious next step in the Sgt. Drake Alexander mythos. Grizzled and battle-hardened as the "battle of all time" has taken a heavy toll on him physically, his soul calloused from all he has witnessed in Valhalla, and all he has lost... yet still he presses on, fiercely determined to see the end of the war. For he has long since forgotten the life he had before being summoned through the wellsprings, and, purpose fulfilled, he has no desire to see life after the battle has finished.

I agree with this sentiment completely. Heroscape is played 98% of the time at home games. The tournament scene represents a very small fraction of the Heroscape community and is mostly comprised of unsponsored events by local tournament organizers. These concerns should be taken up with your local community.

I'm sure if AH was to sponsor a tournament they would figure this out but I can't imagine that in year one we're going to see Warhammer type participation anyway.
