Re: HoSS Online - Season 1: Sign-Ups until July 20th, 2014!
A few thoughts to the Metagame:
I find the lack of Hero killer power for squads interesting. The squads are set up to be good at wiping each other out, and there are quite a few heroes on both sides to support them doing it. There are a lot, lot, lot of support characters here that boost the bread and butter infantry - support characters who, due to their being heroes, are hard to kill using the infantry. The Rebels will be better than the Stormtroopers and taking out the supporting Imperial heroes, but in exchange the Troopers might well be better against the Rebel Infantry. The "artillery" heroes look interesting - low to no mobility, but interesting choices and risks. The Rebel Heavy Gunner and the E-Web Gunner ought to be good against the infantry, while the Atgar Cannon offers a rare chance in HoSS to throw down more than 5 dice, at that at a very impressive range of 9. The catch? The Heavy Gunner gets 1 attack of 2 if he moved, the Atgar Cannon can't move at all and might blow a fuse, and the E-Web cannon might blow up and kill a pod of troops with him. Vader looks like a monster, and a figure a fair few armies will feature him as a (the?) centerpiece. As far as a good answer to Vader goes, I'm not sure. Han und Chewie are about the only ones with the attack power to count on to get through Vader's defense, but being heroes makes them very vulnerable to Force Choke. Boosted Rebel Squads might do it (pods based around Leia?), but they're more vulnerable to Stormtroopers Vader might have in tow. 2 Wampas take up the same amount of points as Vader and, if they're careful, can land an attack of 7 on him when they go in. As for the independent cards, I don't imagine we'll see too many. Jawas and Greedo don't make a lot of since, especially with so few droids (unless someone goes with Jawas as a counter to any Q9s that might pop up). I think A-Zulmun and his Raiders will suffer from being melee figures in a world of range, and they are further hurt by the fact that the SW squads are good against squads and there are the anti-squad gunner heroes. Another interesting aspect of the Metagame is probably going to be the AT-STs. They present some very new, very interesting things to consider, especially considering engagement rules. They are pretty mobile and can ignore enemy troops as long as they can find somewhere to stop at the end of their turn (unless someone parks a Bantha in the way!) Being heroes and having an autoshield against normal attacks will make them pretty close to impenetrable for squads, and they'll be able to run through a map and quickly target any supporting officers/heroes before cleaning up the squaddies. However, if they run into an Atgar Cannon, they are going to have some real problems (no autoshield, -1 defense die for every skull rolled, and they might be facing an attack as high as 6. An all-red roll means instant death for a chicken walker), which is really interesting, because the Atgar Cannon seems to be a pretty poor choice otherwise. Vader is a threat here too, being able to choke and then beat the crap out of an AT-ST. All in all, I'm waiting anxiously to see what happens. There is definitely a rock-paper-scissors aspect concerning a lot of units, and compared with Classic, some rather large holes left unfilled by the HoSS (which makes playing with them much cooler and more like the movies, but might be interesting when you can pick one classic guy). A successful army will need to have a solution for Vader, perhaps calling on a Classic Hero Killer to do it. Some of the Classic Heroes would be really nasty due to the focus of HoSS (Braxas, the Hero insta-killing monster who doesn't have to worry too much about the weak HoSS squads?). I think the format hurts the HoSS offer a little bit. Something that allowed players to bring 2 armies would greatly increase the chances of leaning a little on the terrain-based abilities of the Tusken Raiders, the Snow Soldiers on both sides, and the Death Star Troopers. As is, those guys will have an edge if they land on the right map, but run the chance of being too expensive if they land on the wrong planet. There's a ton of potential to see creative and interesting armies, especially if you call up a specialist from Valhalla (Ne-Gok-Sa - Mindshakle: the original Jedi Mind Trick). There's also potential to do some really weird, but not necessarily completely ineffective things (drafting Mittens and 18 Probe Droids to play a fast army of suicide bombers, building up a protected starting zone with 11 Atgar Cannons and not having to worry about blowing one up because you've got 10 others, R2 running around behind Q9, Marcus and Leia leading the Rebels, Tarkin riding Theracus around, the possibilities go on and on). Jugger It's like football with swords or LARPing without the geeky stuff. In other words, it's awesomely perfect! |

Re: HoSS Online - Season 1: Sign-Ups until July 20th, 2014!
Great analysis, Tai-Pan. I agree that squads have trouble with heroes in this format - though Rebel Troopers backed up by Leia and a Rebel Captain should do well against anything but Vader, AT-STs, and squads that outrange them (Imperial Officer + Stormtroopers). I agree that this tournament will be a lot of rock-paper-scissors.
The main threats one should be able to handle, IMO, are the Rebel swarm, Stormtroopers, Vader, AT-STs, and a Tusken swarm. For Stormtroopers and Rebels, you need a strong hero. For Rebels and Tuskens, you need multiple attacks per turn. For AT-STs, you need a special attack. For Vader & AT-STs, you need a couple good hero killers. Vader doesn't really have a counter - he's going to do some serious damage to your army no matter what. There's no way you can recruit every necessary counter for your army, but you should have a plan for each of those threats regardless. I hadn't really thought about threatening classic heroes. Braxas does seem like a monster in this format, but her low defense leaves her more vulnerable to squads than the other dragons. Nilfheim would do good against a lot of HoSS figures. |

If the point total had allowed it, I would have loved shades of bleakewoode x3 as my classic bring in. Great counter to Vader and could handle well the low defense low attack squaddies.

Signed UP. I had about 3 different hilarious ideas floating in my head, one of which was mentioned above with Mittens and a ton of Probe Droids. I have finally settled. Whya is July 21st so far away?!
Are the HoSS figures for use in online play right now, or do they still need to be uploaded? |
