Herodice (The Heroscape/Heroica inspired game)

My son and I invented a game. He calls is "Dice Heroica", I call it Herodice.

It is a simple, inexpensive game that can be set up and played in about 10 minutes.

HeroDice
The game requires:

• 3 White D6 (wizards)
• 3 White D4 (archers)
• 2 White D8 (knights)
• 2 White D12 (king)
• 3 Black D6 (wizards)
• 3 Black D4 (archers)
• 2 Black D8 (knights)
• 2 Black D12 (king)
• A standard chessboard

Game setup
Place the dice on the chessboard as shown below.
All dice are placed with the largest number face up to indicate health.

Game Play
Each player picks a side. A player places a white dice in one hand and a black dice in another out of sight of Player 2. Player 2 picks a hand. The color corresponding to that side shall be Player 1. The losing Player shall be player 2.
Movement

1. Player 1 selects a die on the board and rolls the identical die to determine movement
2. Player 1 moves the selected die up to the number rolled at one square per number rolled.
   1. Dice can only be moved horizontally and vertically, not diagonally
   2. Dice cannot move through any other dice
   3. If player 1’s die is adjacent to any other die, (vertically or horizontally)
      Player 1 may attack.
3. Player 2 selects a die on the board and rolls the corresponding die to determine movement for
4. that round.
5. Player 2 moves the selected die up to the number rolled at one square per number rolled.
   1. Dice can only be moved horizontally and vertically, not diagonally
   2. Dice cannot move through any other dice
   3. If player 2’s die is adjacent to any other die, (vertically or horizontally)
      Player 2 may attack.

Attack

1. The attacking player rolls an identical die to itself.
2. The number rolled is subtracted from the health of the attacked die.
3. The attacked die is adjusted so the resultant number from the previous step is face up.
   1. This is the die’s new health.
   2. If the health is below 1, the die is removed from the game

Each die has special abilities to increase combat effectiveness

• Archers (D4)
  Instead of moving, archers may attack any die within 4 squares (horizontally or vertically). After moving, archers may attack any dice within a straight line up to 4 squares (horizontally or vertically)
• Wizards (D6)
  If a 6 is rolled during movement, the wizard may choose not to move and instead deal 6 points of damage to any dice within 6 squares (horizontally or vertically). This damage does not have to be in a straight line
• Knight (D8)
  The knight can attack any die within 2 squares from itself (horizontally or vertically). This damage does not have to be in a straight line, and the knight can attack over another die
• King (D12)
  Instead of attacking an adjacent die, the king may roll the D12. This number is added to the health of the adjacent die up to the maximum health of the die.

I like it! I have a couple of questions. Do the Archers get to attacks then, as it seems like they get one before a move and one afterwards, both of them ranged. This seems too powerful, although they are a 4-sided die. Also, the King's power is not that clear.

Does the game end when you completely destroy the other army, or just the King? I also wondered why you don't have more players - maybe a couple of pawns/peasants that are 2-sided coins but maybe a power is they can have 4 extra move or something (like chess pawns or Stratego scout).

Seems like a mix of of chess, Stratego, and summoner wars, but I never played Heroica so maybe like that too. Quick, easy, and fun game though. I could totally you selling the game to like Disney so they can make a cheap but unique franchised boardgame.

The knights get to attack instead of move, and then attack. They can only get two attack per turn.

The king can heal instead of attack, so He has a dual purpose

The game is over when the entire army is destroyed.

I kept it simple.

If you want, each player can have three coins that they can place on the board to act as obstacles.

If you have any suggestions on wording, I will gladly consider them.

I added a new character...the elf (D10) and tweaked the wording in the rules to make it a little better.

I managed to get all of the game for approximately $16.00 (D4's are expensive)

Very nice game! Reminds me of Lionheart which is kinda of a Stratego/chess mix. You might check it out.
