Original post:

About a year ago, I stumbled upon 65 LOTR customs for Heroscape at www.BoardGameGeek.com in their download section. The author did a fairly decent job (though I subsequently modified the stats and abilities for the ones I use). The customs were contained in 5 zip files, named: LOTR_HS_1.zip, LOTR_HS_2.zip, etc. I still have the files and wanted to share with the Heroscape community, so I decided to contact the author to ask permission. Well, after an extensive search, I’m fairly certain the files are no longer online; consequently, I’m unable to locate the author.

So I suspect I should not post, but I’m not certain. It would be a shame if I were the only one to benefit from them.

So what do you guys think? Is there any official guidance regarding this sort of situation?

If you post his original cards and give him credit it shouldn't be an issue...but you will need to get Contributor status or become a Site Supporter to upload them here.

The problem is I don't know his name or userid. The zip files only contain the customs. I would have to attribute to Unknown.

Well if you want to get into licensing, do you know what he released them under? Public Domain and Creative Commons are the two safe ones. Both you can modify. Creative Commons you should site, but you could say Board Game Geeks.

I love birdies and butterflies and rainbows and unicorns and glitter.

His point is he doesn't want to post someone else's work without permission ....nothing to do with licensing.

Re: 65 LOTR Customs

Need to alter that link to www.boardgamegeek.com You've got an "s" after games and that's throwing it off.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/11170

Works a bit a better...go to page 2 and 3 of the files section for the LotR material...which I had overlooked. Thanks for clueing me into it.

Cool! You found it. There's also a link where I can contact him. I'll do so and see if he is willing to share them here.

Well if the work was under Public Domain, he wouldn't need to use permission is just what I am saying.

Re: 65 LOTR Customs

Ummmm.... we're talking about a guy who created customs for a trademarked game (Heroscape) based on Tolkien's copyrighted work. Sure, the Tolkien estate probably doesn't give a rat's behind, nor does Hasbro, but what he's done is technically illegal, unless he has written permission from both parties to create these customs, so he has no rights to be violated, nor can he have any sort of license on his customs. As Ona pointed out, it's merely an issue of wanting to be a nice guy and give someone credit for his creativity.

Re: 65 LOTR Customs

Thanks for sharing this CK!
I was looking for some more of these to go with some others I had found.
You mentioned you had to tweak these. Would you be willing to share your LotR Customs as well?

Work hard, play harder!
