The Book of Saylind the Kyrie Warrior

The Book of Saylind the Kyrie Warrior
Jandar's Oath - Collection 3 - "Heroes of Nostralund"

If you cannot see the Army Card graphic, check Hasbro's Unit Page for stats and special powers, plus "character biography" and other non-game unit info.

Character Bio: Ullar recognized the fearless nature of Saylind, and he rewarded her with one of his most prized possessions: the Spear of Summoning. With this spear in her hands, Saylind may try to summon any ally on the battlefield to her side. This weapopn makes Saylind a very
dangerous opponent indeed, when combined with the Kyries' natural ability to fly. Many of Utgar's minions have found themselves outflanked with more than one enemy in their midst, and nowhere to run. With this spear, she can also summon a huge dragon like Charos. (Hasbro)

-Rulings and Clarifications-
  • - SPEAR OF SUMMONING : Activating Powers on Summoned Units Card
When Saylind uses her Spear of Summoning to move a figure with a special power like Carry that says “Before moving”, can that power on the moved card take effect?
No, the note of “Before moving” on powers like Carry refers to the normal movement of the figure. (Hasbro FAQ)

    - SPEAR OF SUMMONING : Self Summon
Can Saylind use her Spear of Summoning to summon herself?
No. Saylind, and her Spear of Summoning would need to stay on the board in order to determine adjacency with the newly summoned figure. Saylind cannot summon herself. (Hasbro FAQ)

Saylind is highly underrated. Sure she involves a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief to convince yourself that she IS in fact a woman (lousy man-hands), and she requires more finesse than other characters, but she can be a great strategic "wildcard" in the eyes of your opponent.

Flying Saylind close to the front lines, while leaving behind a variety of heavy hitters in your starting zone, can give your opponent hives wondering which heavy hitter you're going to summon to the battle. Will she bring up Jotun, who will tear through your approaching swarm army? Will she summon Kaemon Awa to take out your encroaching Ninja? Or will Q9 be dropped in to wreak havoc on your KMA?

And if you have in your army Syvarris, Dead Eye, and Kaemon Awa, Saylind is a much better choice than Theracus for getting all 3 up to a quicker high ground position. After Saylind summons one of them, she doesn't have to fly all the way back to the starting zone to summon the next... Granted, your rolls may suck in summoning, but the odds are with you sufficiently that she'd still be statistically faster than Theracus in positioning multiple characters on the battlefield. (Theracus tends to be more of a one-shot shuttle, typically being relatively unused after the first drop).

In small battles of 400pts and less, she's not likely to fit in. But in many 500+ armies, finding room for an 80pt "wildcard" that keeps your opponent guessing about your strategy/tactics (just who the heck is he/she going to bring over there?....) makes her well worth her cost... and don't forget that she can fight when needed!

I agree that she is underrated. I use her in the same sort of situations as Kelda. Large maps with high value figures in my army....she whisks them out of danger and has time to do it due to the immense geography between her and the enemy.

I've been working on a 3 fig 500 point build with her using Braxas and Charos. She grants both DISENGAGE! and can move them up to 8 spaces away (using the front space as an adjacent space for final placement).

Braxas getting swarmed, SPEAR her, Charos getting shot up, SPEAR him. Saylind in trouble, back up is on the way.

For a 400-pt army, how about this?

110 Acolarh
080 Saylind
100 Syvarris
100 Warriors of Ashra x2

390 TOTAL

Harrass with Syvarris, but keep him back. Saylind should start adjacent to Acolarh, to give her 8 spaces of flying. When ready, charge Saylind towards the enemy lines, teleporting in warrior women and/or Acolarh whenever the d20 hits. Once your warriors are in contact with the enemy, they should last a good long while (due to their Defensive Agility + Acolarh). After the dust settles, use any survivors to clean up.

We haven't used Saylind in months, but some of the things we've learned playing her in the past:

* Saylind's 6 movment and spear are a blessing on maps with high, heavy snow terrain.
She can head out early and start summoning ranged figures who have a more difficult time with traversing the terrain conditions.
As well, those summoned units have engagement protection early in the game now that they are high up and surrounded by the hindering snow.

* Drafting her with Raelin can create a hybrid Kyrie warrior - one with 5 defense (for Saylind of course), a Disengaging (Raelin...), Defensive Aura with movement nearly anywhere on the board.

* Using order markers 1 and 2 on Saylind hopefully ensures she's teleporting someone in a round. If not, try again on the second marker or bring an additional passenger along for the ride.

Love the absense of a size restriction on the spear's summoning power

To go with this, in my most recent battle Saylind was able to transport Syvarris to the top of a mountain where he could shoot down my opponent. When the opponent finally made it up to engage me, I had Saylind transport Syvarris to another mountain. Needless to say he was very upset.

Feedback: We could all use a little more

For the synergy offered shouldn't it say that the Mass 4th line benefits from her valiant nature...?

PoF used her in a game recently. He tried to summon an almost fully wounded Braxas about 8 times! Each of them failing, ending up in my Marro Warriors killing Braxas. Man was he pissed.

I've been using Saylind a lot more recently and she has been kicking butt with her summoning. I always try to use her with Charos. I think the combo works pretty good. Fly her close to a group of enemies, summon Big Green, and next turn fly him right into the middle and engage as many guys as you can. Booya

Teamski is surprisingly tart
Saylind is useless on tournement maps, obviously. However, on a large map with decent height, she can turn the tables in a big way. I used her once with a couple squads of Monks. I summoned them onto a castle and they kicked the crap out a slew of Marro Drones along with an escorting Su-Bak_Na. They literally rained hurt all over the place.

Saylind's summoning is one of my all-time favorite abilities. If used right, you will make the Airborne Elite look like a joke!! I still want to field the Charos/Kelda/Saylind combo that was mentioned a couple years ago.....It would be fun to send Charos in, Summon, heal wounds, repeat!!

-Ski

p.s. That was the longest it has ever took me to make 1000 posts. I'm losing it, hehehe....
