Mad Wookiee has a series of posts called the Cartographer's Toolbox. I recommend reading through that.
Beyond that, build some of the other maps you find on the site and analyze how they are put together. If you are wanting balanced, Tournament style maps, read through some of the BoV thread especially the reviews by the judges. These will give you some insight on what makes a balanced map. |

To add to what mac122 has said, I'd also suggest coming up with a rough draft of your map on paper first. Just so you can get an idea as to how you want it to look. Then I would start to build it in Virtualscape. Once you have it looking the way you want it in that program, build it for real and see if it meets your expectations. I've found that actually building it helps me to decide where (if any) glyphs should be placed and where LoS blockers should be placed.

I would actually suggest that you start with physical builds. Work your way slowly into VS until you feel comfortable with it.
