Unique Draft or Pre-Built Armies?
I've noticed some brief discussions here and there about drafting an army at game time vs. bringing pre-built armies as two options.
What's the most popular type of game? Draft or Pre-built? For me, we always play draft games, which, IMHO, is half the fun of the game... 1) you never know what army you'll be playing with until end of draft, 2) you can counter-draft if necessary, 3) you can pool HS resources in terms of units available, (saves lots 'o $) 4) adds element of excitement, surprise, frustration, and of course, sinister glee when denying an opponent his next obvious choice. What do you guys generally play, and why? "The Democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." ~ Thomas Jefferson |

Almost always draft, unless we want to see how particular armies do against one another.

I play both.
Usually at our Dallas get-togethers we use pre-built. We have so many figures (ninthdoc) that drafting wouldn’t make any sense unless we limited play to one set of unique per game. Pre built makes it easier to get games in quicker and work on specific match-ups. Pre-built is also how tournaments are run. But I always play a draft game at my home and at my bro's place. We roll with single unique per game and it does make for very enjoyable draft games. I didn’t vote as I play both about equal. |

We always draft. The only thing we don't do is screw the opponents; ie drafting someone's Hero after taking their squad or vice-versa. The daft is the last chance to be civilized, and then the gloves (or mittens) come off!

i voted as "pre-built" but my armies are typically not pre built persay. The way i do it:
We build the field. We determine army size. Each player then creates their own army out of their own pieces (IE: Spent your own money on it; i am the only one in my group that has Minions, so i am the only one in my group that may use minions). Then we determine starting zones, and set up armies, roll for initiative and play the game. |

We always draft before each game and put in the draft only one of each unique.

I always let my kittybear build her amy then build mine, so we've never really done the draft thing, we did maybe once, just took longer, I'd rather just be able to design a army then play. Sometimes I figured out my army first on paper, it just depends.

Drafting is half the fun of the game for me. When pressed for time, we have done random prebuilt armies.

Lately its just the GF and I so I like using the Suprising Tart Heroscape Draft Wizard to pick my armies.
Drafting is great fun though, especially if you play only one unique per game. Opens up a lot of drafting strategies. Also, I added a third option to the poll. |
