Re: X-Wing

Weapons Guidance is a whole brand new upgrade card category that only arrived in the TFA: Starter Set.

Yes - Push the Limit is awesome, especially on Soontir because he gets a Focus when he gets a Stress; I like to give it to as many pilots as possible ( also Engine Upgrade if the ships don't already Boost )

Yes - 60 - 90 minutes is probably about average, but don't expect the games to go quicker just because you and your friends are getting better at it. If you experiment with a new list you want to try against a Top Tier List flown by an experience player, it can be over pretty quickly (20 - 30 mins.) However two evenly matched players with decent lists might both start out with 4 ships, both loose two of them early within 40 - 50 mins., and then a lucky / unlucky dice roll will leave two damaged ships trying to chase down that last damaged opponent's ship for an extra 45 mins.

Yes - Set Up Time is also an important consideration. It can be very frustrating to be ready to play and then have to watch your opponent shuffle through several decks to find the right pilots and upgrades that he/she is in the mood to fly and then have to keep re-calculating to get the points to come out just right. Most tournaments here in the Garden State (we've been able to coordinate the events of almost twenty FLGS so that there's minimal overlap) ... require participants to walk in ready to play with their list prepared and ready to hand in. And they still have to set a timer to keep it to 50 - 75 minute rounds with partial card scoring if necessary.

Yes - I agree with Caps, that if you want to play a "Drafting Style" format then definitely alternate picking the Pilots (with their appropriate ship), because as you've recently discovered the 8's & 9's with upgrades tend to really dominate the lower pilot skill numbers, unless a bunch of them can be kept in a disciplined swarm, which requires some fancy maneuvering. But I'd recommend a 2 vs. 1 match instead to keep the Imperial vs. Rebel theme as much as possible.

Re: X-Wing

Ordered a bunch of ships from CoolStuff earlier this month. It was supposed to arrive on the 9th, and supposedly it did--at the wrong place. Long story short, FedEx wouldn't refund CoolStuff for misdelivering the package but CoolStuff is reshipping it to me anyway. Moral of the story: FedEx sucks and CSI is awesome!

Re: X-Wing

I am very sorry to hear about your misfortune @capsocrates and do hope that everything gets sorted out. However, I'm afraid that we may be seeing much more of this type of irresponsible behavior in states that legalize the Demon Weed. (~~lol~~)

Re: X-Wing

Unrelated to X-Wing, but yes, FedEx SUCKS. We tried to use them a few times at work but stopped after about the third time they either lost or took three days to deliver an "overnight" package.

Hope you'll be enjoying your new toys soon!

Haha, not sure who repped this not knowing what "alpha-stirke" and "blockers" are, but I'll explain!

An alpha-strike is an all-out first strike in which you try to deal overwhelming damage and eliminate as many enemies as early as possible. Usually it's a one-time thing at the start of the game and you lack longer-term sustainable damage.

A blocker is a lower pilot skill ship that's used to move into the path of a higher pilot skill enemy. They will bump your ship and lose their actions, usually setting them up for deadly shots from your other ships.

Re: X-Wing

Ah, that makes much more sense. I thought a blocker was like a defensive linebacker, keeping the enemy from getting at your ships. Didn't really make sense given the game's mechanics.

Re: X-Wing

I got out of 40K and Magic about a year ago because it was getting expensive and made the mistake of getting into X-Wing a weak ago. bought the F/O starter, tie, tie advanced, interceptor, bomber, x wing, a wing, b wing, and just placed an order from MM for over a hundred dollars. I'm hooked and cant wait for the FLGS championship to get a C3PO.

Sweet!

Also, be glad that it's still cheaper than either of those games!

Well MS, I think that will depend on how long you're into this new game and how large a collection you want to amass.
CC, I feel sorry for you, climbing out of one money pit just to throw yourself into another one (~~lol~~). But don't worry. You're not alone. Yesterday I also sent $125.oo to FF via MM (*AGAIN*) for more X-Wing crap. There should be a 12-Step recovery program for guys like us. I know how it will go . . . #1 - stop swimming in D'Nile:

"Hello. My name is John G. and I'm a sucker gaming miniatures. It started when I was very young. I had a plethora of toy soldiers. And then someone showed me how to use dice for stochastic combat resolution and I was hooked. Now it's turned into a full blown addiction. I need help, but my family doesn't understand because they go to the Atlantic City casinos several times a week. What should I do?"

Someone who left 40K for X-Wing's already done the math on FFG a while ago. The cost for ONE competitive 40K army could buy most of an X-Wing collection.
