The tournament was truely awesome (regardless of my wins) and thanks to BiggaBullfrong and Heroscaperdude too.

Here's my battle report.

Utah Monthly Tournament (January, 28 2017).

-500 Points, 50+ unique Hero required, 24 hex limit

It was my first tournament and I felt like a newbie (seeing as how I started playing Heroscape in November of 2016). But no one held that against me and everyone was welcoming.

Round 1 – vs. Ortimus

First round – Drop Failed. Used Knight bonding and overreaching attack to get Eldgrim on a glyph (movement) and moved Knights toward glyph area. Ortimus moved Iskra toward glyphs and summoned Rechets. (I was hoping for a fail there, but alas). He used Rechets to knock out Eldgrim and take initative glyph. Last Rechet engaged knights. Knights take care of one Rechet, retake movement glyph, and wound Iskra.

Second round – Drop Succeeds and I took it. Placed Airborne Elite on height to target Cyprien. I made a huge mistake by putting them too close. Ortimus got the initiative. I got one free round with Airborne taking potshots at Cyprien from height. I only managed to put 3 wounds on him. Another mistake – I should have moved them away from him so that I could have had two free rounds with them. He freezing touches 1 the next turn and eliminates another, healing two of his wounds. I don’t do much as he flies away to attack Krav Maga.

Third round – He knocks out a Krav Maga, the other two hold out as he repeatedly tries to freezing touch and attack them. While he is focused on the Krav Maga, I surround him with knights and Sir Gilbert. The Krav Maga keep rolling high defense while the Knights and Gilbert knock out Cyprien.

Fourth round – I start moving everyone to height. Krav Maga/Knights take out Iskra and remaining Rechets.

Fifth round – Big mountain top battle against shades. I risk an engagement swipe to move Sir Gilbert down the mountain and take out Sonya Esenwein.

Time called. He has all of his shades. I have 5 knights, 2 krav, and Gilbert, I win on points. Knights/Sir Gilbert the clear MVPs of my team. They were able to rectify the mistakes I made with Airborne. Krav don’t kill points worth, but drew Cyprian’s attention and managed to roll high defense dice long enough to for the knights/Gilbert to get him. Ugly win, but still … a first tourney win.

Round 2 – vs. Taylor/BiggaBullfrog

His Army = 3 x Capuchen Gladiators, Crixus, Sparticus

I don’t remember the game very well (BiggaBullfrog may have to file his report). It was a very small board which favored his army. The bigger deal was that I made a lot of mistakes. I tried to do too much at the same time (control both glyphs and height). I spread myself too thin too quickly. I should have used my ranged squad against his all melee army, but I didn’t (I probably could have run-and-gunned with the Krav pretty well against them at the beginning). I also didn’t get the drop for the Airborne until late in the game. I placed them way too close to his gladiators and when I didn’t get initiative he beat them all in one round. I should have placed them close to his starting zone and taken out Sparticus.

The dice really favored him in his attacks and I only got the initiative once. But honestly, BiggaBullfrog would have won anyway. He played an absolutely flawless game with the Greeks. My first tournament loss. (As Han Solo aptly said "Great kid! Don't get cocky!").

Round 3 – vs. wjscaper

Board = Badru’s Valley

His Army = 5 x venoc vipers, venoc warlord, fen hydra, Brave Arrow, Isamu

Round 1 – I got the drop. I positioned the airborne elite on height on both sides of the board. When I got initiative too, it was just too tempting. I almost never use grenades with Airborne Elite, but this time I did. I grenaded his starting position (and venoc vipers get no defense rolls). I took out 9 of his vipers with 2 grenades (one grenade was a dud). The one mistake I had made was placing my fourth man too far away to throw his grenade (imagine what could have happened with a fourth grenade in the mix).
He rushed up the hill with some vipers but only took out one airborne (also sent one to the defense glyph in the middle of the board). I took out some more vipers with airborne and even Eldgrim as he went to the glyph. By the end of round 1, 4 out of 5 venoc squads gone.

Round 2 – He eventually took out the airborne as we both moved toward the center of the board to fight over the glyph (He needed that defense glyph and I couldn’t let him have it). He used Fen Hydra and Venoc warlord to take out an entire squad of knights. Wjscaper rarely possessed the glyph however.

Round 3 – Run and gun with the Krav on height against the Venoc Warlord while they battled the last squad of knights and Sir Gilbert. Took out the Venoc Warlord and wounded the Hydra.

Round 4 – Wjscaper finished off the knights with Fen Hydra (and even Gilbert only had one life left when it was all over), but used Krav Maga from height to finish off Hydra. He conceded the game at that point (we were near time anyway).

The D20 was helpful here as it gave me initiative in Round 1 and I only ever had to face 1 frenzy attack from the vipers. If the D20 had not been kind to me, the game might have gone quite differently.

2 – 1 after 2 rounds.

Round 4 – vs. The Dewk

His army = 3 x Marro Drones, 3 x Marro Stingers, Su-bak-na, Otonagi

I don’t remember the order of the rounds. Early in the game, we went back and forth with knights and drones, Krav and stingers. I was able to take the defense glyph and special unit attack glyph early and hold them with knights (the defense glyph the entire time). The Dewk was able to take height and eliminate my Krave Maga Agents effectively. We were about even during the middle of the game, without any clear momentum for either of us.

Then I got the drop. Placed on height to see what I could do. And I got initiative. … (I love the Airborne Elite’s ability to–sometimes–completely change the dynamics of the game.

I was able to retake the special unit attack glyph, clear the heights, and eliminate all but one of his stingers. He moves Su-Bak-Na to get rid of my defenders near the special unit attack glyphs (Dang he’s a beast). I’m able to use the two remaining airborne elite (from height) to destroy Su-Bak-Na. He concedes the game to spare us both the indignity of me chasing Otonagi around the board.

Overall record 3 – 1. Tied with The Dewk in terms of record, but the computer puts him in first based on the other people he beat. So I took second place. The Dewk – ever the gracious host – lets me pick first from the prize table.

Thanks all for the fun!

Food for thought = Somehow we should figure out a way to do a clean-up group so that the host/hosts aren't stuck putting everything way.

It's been a week since the tourney, so it's time to get a report pounded out!

500 points, required 50+ points hero, so I packed up x3 Stingers, x3 Drones, Su-bak-na, and Otanashi (who gets a tricky bonus from Su-bak-na! What synergy!).

Game 1, Badru Valley, Heber fielding x3 Venoc Vipers, Venoc Warlord, Fen Hydra, Marro Warriors, Zettian Guards

This was Heber's first time playing Heroscape. @DewNoHarm had helped him build an army about half an hour before. But I knew Heber was a veteran board and tabletop gamer (seriously, the guy has tens of thousands of dollars worth of games), so it wasn't going to be an easy win.
Round one he rushed across with Venocs, while I positioned Drones on the center glyph (defense) and Stingers on height. My marro killed more Venoc than he killed Marro, but then again, my dudes are worth more points, so it was pretty even.
Round two was better for me, as Heber elected to put two of his order markers on Zettian Guards, in order to match my melee/range combination. This proved to be a mistake, as none of my guys were killed, and I was able to kill all but 2 vipers, making it a bad idea to put order markers on them.
Round three the Hydra came out to play. It gobbled up a couple of drones, and resisted my counter-attacks... until order marker 3. Stinger Drain + Height = Dead Hydra (I rolled 4/5 skulls for one Stinger, and the Hydra only rolled 1 defense. The second Stinger finished the job.)
Round four the Marro Warriors and Warlord put up a bit of a fight, but trading figure for figure only works if the Marro Warriors successfully regenerate, which they were unable to do (out of 2 attempts). Although by the end of the round, I didn't have any full squads left of either Drones or Stingers.
Round five Su-Bak-Na came out to play with the Warlord. A few bony chomps later and it was over.

Seriously, for a first timer, he played like he had known the game for months, moving his figures very strategically and efficiently. The only thing that probably ruined him was putting those early game OMs on the Zettian Guards rather than on Venocs or the Hydra. He also didn't get any successful Frenzy rolls (though I understand that changed in his next game...)

Game 2, Elswin Plateua, David and his all-hero army of Kaemon Awa, Cyprien & Sonya, Raelin v.1, Finn

Round one I figured it was smart to play reactively. So I simply grabbed glyphs, and started putting my Stingers on height to see what David was going to do with his assembled heroes. He did what was expected - moved Raelin to a central spot so that his dudes could move out and still stay in her aura.
Round two, well, as is the case most of the time, you've got to get rid of Raelin before anything else, so that's what I did! Rolled to move 6 drones, and so I was able to get 3 around her. They whappied on her, and although Kaemon came to avenge, she was dead by the end of the round.
Round three Cyprien comes out to play, as my Marro are positioned in such a way that he can kill 2 per turn (chilling touch + normal attack), and he proceeds to do that! My Marro are getting their blood sucked a lot faster than I would like, and he's healing just as fast as I'm wounding (6 wounds were healed, by the end of the game)
Round four I knew I had to kill Cyprien in 1 (max 2) OM, before he could heal himself. Stingers were my best chance at that. A full squad was in range, one had height, and I successfully rolled for the drain. Stinger #1 did 3 damage... Stinger #2 did 2 damage... now it was all up to Stinger #3 to squeak in a single wound... well, he must've been wanting to live up to his squadmates expectations, as he did just that - a single wound finished Cyprien, and ruined at least one OM for David. Kaemon put up a good fight, but succumbed to the Marro as well. Then it was just a matter of Finn and a wounded Sonya, by which point it was done.

This game could've gone either way. I felt very behind in the beginning and midgame, with my sloppy positioning of my guys allowing Cyprien to kill 2 Marro per OM a handful of times before I caught on. Luckily the offensive power of the Stingers came through.

Game 3, Risk Road, @BiggaBullfrog and the STEAMROLLER (Gladiators x3, Crixus, Spartacus)

Round one I didn't know what to do. Move out Drones to have a melee battle with gladiators? Move out Stingers and hope they get height before they're engaged? Luckily, BiggaBullfrog made the decision for me - gladiators and Crixus swept across the field to the edge of my startzone FAST (the gladiators had the perfect movement to get them on the road right out of the startzone), so it was apparent I would be playing a defensive game! As gladiators cut down drones, it became apparent that my pushback was going to have to come from Stingers. So I made a wall of sacrificial drones, and fired lightning from behind. The strategy seemed to work, as I was catching up. Each gladiator was killing about 2 of my Marro, but those numbers meant it was going to be close. And sure enough, it was. The game came down to Su-Bak-Na vs Spartacus and a lone gladiator. The bone dragon came through with his massive offense, although he had a few wounds on him when all was said and done. Scarily close game!

Stingers were the MVPs here, and the map helped them by bottlenecking gladiators in certain choke points. The Steamroller is an effective army though, and I didn't roll initiative the first 5 rounds because of their bonus!

Game 4, Calderra, @DewNoHarm fielding a versatile x2 Knights, Sir Gilbert, Krav, Eldgrim, Airborne, and Isamu

Yikes. What does one even do against this army? Try and break through the Knights' high defense first? Kill Gilbert and ruin the Knights' bonding first? To kill Eldgrim or not (because no one likes Krav with 7 move)? Attack Krav and hope they blank against my range attacks? And not to mention the fear of The Drop looming over the map!
I just decided to go back to basics - grab glyphs, get height. The only problem was, I didn't do it effectively. OM 1 went on the Drones, while OM 2 & 3 went on Stingers. Why would I give a single OM to the Drones? They won't be close enough to attack anyone with one activation, nor grab any glyphs. OM 2 (or even 3) should've been placed on the Drones. And I paid for it. However, it wasn't all a loss, as the double OMs on Stingers did get them to height before the Krav (or anyone else), and so they could take some good shots at some figures.
The next round was a little better, as I killed a Krav before they killed anyone themselves (crippling them 33% is always nice), but the other side of the map was being overrun with self-righteous Knights led by that prick, Sir Gilbert!
The next round is where it all changed. The Airborne Elite hadn't dropped in yet, but this time they rolled successfully. DewNoHarm carefully placed them in strategic height spots, and then initiative was rolled. This was KEY. If I got initiative, I had my pick of destroying nearby Airborne (or even Krav), effectively crippling Order Markers placed on them. But alas, it was not to be! My opponent rolled initiative, and the game was over. Airborne elite killed half a dozen figures or so with 2 OMs, and then it was just mop-up for DewNoHarm. I did what I could with Su-Bak-Na, but with only 1 attack per turn against ranged squads, it just wasn't going to happen.

I made some blunders, and DewNoHarm played near-immaculate, with his OM placement correctly predicting what I was going to do with mine. I really enjoyed the map, but the glyphs didn't do me any favors - I never could wrestle the defense +1 glyph away from the knights for more than a few seconds (and couldn't ever get a dude of my own on it), and the Unique Attack glyph does nothing for me, while making his Krav and AE sheer insanity to play against. That DewNoHarm fella acts like he's a noob, but he's a shark!

Three people had a record of 3-1, and although I had been beaten by him, the computer must've been working for Utgar, as it decided that I was first over @DewNoHarm haha MARRO FOR LIFE!

The tournament was a great time, and I had a ton of fun. Met some new people, played against some new figures (how did R&D decide to give Cyprien Stealth Flying??), and learned some new things.

I'm excited for General Wars at the end of the month!!

Bigga’s Battle Report

Pretty simple origin story this time. I had a few armies that I was thinking about, but the morning of the tourney I had a pretty haywire morning, so I grabbed a nice, simple army I had been using for playtesting the night before. You might recognize it:

Good ol’ Steamroller. I’d been wanting to run it at a tourney just for fun anyway, and having the point total exactly at 500 helped. Plus I enjoy Steamrolling, and pure melee armies in general, so I was excited for some good games.

I love the Heavy Gruts. One of my favorite squads in the game. That said, I know what they’re capable of, and I was definitely apprehensive of what they and their big buddy Grimnak could do to my army.

At the beginning of the game, I started rolling my army out of the start zone. Braxton opted for a very defensive approach, keeping most of his army clustered around the height in his start zone and sending out Otonashi to skirmish against my gladiators. That meant I was able to take both glyphs (Defense and Initiative) giving me a huge advantage in my push across the field. Otonashi took more hits than she should have, but eventually fell, and I started rolling into Braxton’s start zone.

First I locked down Othkurik, hacking away at the dragon as he tried to fend off the gladiators. A couple of blanks when rolling defense, though, meant a dead dragon really quick. Then I took out James, who was able to whip and kill a couple gladiators but not enough.

At this point it was only his orcs and Isamu remaining. Grimnak set to Chomping gladiators, but somehow I was able to keep the dino separate from the Heavies and set to killing the squaddies while letting Grimnak take out only one gladiator at a time. More blank defense rolls meant I steamrolled over the orcs faster than I normally should have, and eventually they all fell. Last to die was Isamu, who only got to Vanish a couple times before he went down.

It was a good game. Seriously, Braxton got a ton of blank rolls with his defense. If it weren’t for that it would have been a much closer game.

Knights. Another solid squad in the game. Backed up by two of the strongest Unique ranged squads in the game. I knew fighting some good range would be an uphill battle (hey, that’s not a bad pun in certain situations), but the small size of the map was definitely going to help me out, so I was looking forward to that.

Start of the game, the Airborne didn’t drop, I took initiative, and started rolling out as steamrollers do. DewNoHarm threw Eldgrim out onto a glyph (Common Attack) and started going for height with the bulk of his army while sending out a few knights to back up Eldgrim. Luckily for me, I killed the viking and took his glyph, giving me gladiators with 5 attack. At this point there were a few Knights scattered around the board, so I set to cleaning them up before assaulting the hill where Gilbert, more Knights, and the Krav were waiting. My attack dice were on point this game, so cleaning up these few was easier than it normally would have been.

Once the stragglers were clear, I set to attacking the hill, making use of what openings I could. I crippled the Krav pretty quickly, leaving only one agent left, then set to crippling the rest of his army so he couldn’t get enough out of his OMs. Finally, a few rounds into the game, the Airborne Elite dropped. Dew opted to drop onto several high spots around the map where the Airborne would really be able to clean up my last few Gladiators and cripple my army if he won initiative. If I won initiative, however, I would likely clean up the Airborne Elite and be able to finish off the rest of his army, so it was all down to the roll.

I won the initiative roll, engaged most of the Airborne, and wiped them off the map with my high attack rolls that were so characteristic of that game. Dew decided to concede at that point, as he didn’t have the power in his OMs to retaliate to the remainder of my army.

Great game overall. I’m really impressed with how much skill DewNoHarm showed during the game, especially considering he and The Dewk only started playing a couple months ago. They’re both really good players and great to play with. In his battle report, Dew said he spread his army too thin, which is probably a good assessment. My gladiators beat Knights too easily one-on-one. If he had played a more defensive game, capitalizing on his range, and especially if we had a larger map to suit his army better, the game would have been much closer, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d pulled off the win. (It also would have been closer if I wasn’t rolling so crazy with my attack dice, and if I didn’t win initiative every time.)

Before the tournament, The Dewk was telling me how much he wanted to play on Risk Road, and I was telling him how much I wanted to play him as we hadn’t had the chance to play each other before now, so this was really exciting to be able to have both of our dreams come true in the same game.

Quick note - we were playing on a slightly modified version of Risk Road that I made for this tournament. I wasn’t comfortable throwing the original into a tourney map pool, but with some small changes and some testing I was able to make something much more tournament worthy without really changing much of the map itself (just opening up some paths and lowering some of the extreme height, really). I’ll be updating it in my thread sometime when I get the chance.

Okay, anyway, the game began and the last thing I was going to do was let The Dewk get height with his Stingers. Going into this I knew that the Stingers would be the hardest part for my army to deal with as those things are just beasts. So I surged across the board, ignoring the glyph (Initiative) and getting a couple of Gladiators skirmishing with Drones at the edge of The Dewk’s start zone early on. My strategy was to out-value his Marro - he had twice as many figures as I did, but if I could grab key positions on the height outside his start zone and limit how many Gladiators he could kill in a turn I might have a chance.

Surprising to me, that strategy started working. I really didn’t think I had a prayer, but it turns out good stats are good as Crixus and my gladiators started taking out more and more Marro. Each time a Gladiator died I was usually able to have one in its place the next turn thanks to the road and the straight shot towards his start zone. Of course, I could only do that for so long before it took a couple more turns for me to get Gladiators into position, and eventually The Dewk beat off my first wave of attackers (helped, of course, by the Stingers who never failed a roll for Stinger Drain). They had done work though, killing most if not all of his Drones and a fair amount of Stingers (I had been capitalizing on killing Stingers whenever possible).

With my last few Gladiators and Spartacus I started swinging around one of the hills towards where he was gathering up the last of his Marro. Doing so, I had the choice to either play it safe and wait until I had all my Gladiators in optimal position for an attack, or to swing in quick before The Dewk could position all his Marro on high ground. I decided to go with he map’s name and risk it, and it paid off. Spartacus killed a couple Marro and the Gladiators killed more. I lost a couple on the way, but I took care of that party and there were only a few Stingers and Su-Bak-Na remaining. Spartacus started cleaning up a couple Marro on the bridge while my last Gladiator cleaned up Otonashi. Su-Bak-Na took on Spartacus, and the two started duking it out in epic fashion.

By epic fashion, I mean Spartacus dealt a few wounds to Su-Bak-Na, and Su-Bak-Na destroyed Spartacus. My last Gladiator tried to kill the Marro, but there’s only so much you can do against a giant bone dragon. Great game. Again, I’m really impressed with how well The Dewk and his brother play for being pretty new to the game.

There had been stories going around all day of how much damage Cyprien was doing to opposing armies, and now I found my self sitting across the table from the very vampire himself. Well, one of them. There were two vampire armies that day. But anyway, I was not looking forward to finding out what that vampire would do against me.

The game started with ortimus rolling out some Shades, taking the glyph and some high points around the map. I started working on killing the Shade on the glyph and taking it for myself, thinking that it would be a pretty standard game. Then ortimus revealed OM 3 on Sonya, advanced her, successfully summoned the Rechets, and flew the across the board to engage Spartacus. Then, in the first attack against him, he rolled 3 skulls, instantly destroying Spartacus with the Lethal Sting of the Rechets.

Man, don’t you love Heroscape. I love those moments.

So the rest of the game I was fighting with uninspired Gladiators, and it showed. I did clean up the Rechets and kill a squad of Shades, but then Cyprien came out to play. The vampire started killing my squaddies (luckily for me he kept rolling for Chilling Touch against Gladiators I put on the glyph instead of against Crixus - his first two rolls he rolled an 18 ). He then destroyed Crixus and flew into my start zone where my remaining three Gladiators were.

And here we entered into a standstill. For some reason, Cyprien stopped killing Gladiators, but I wasn’t rolling well enough to do anything to him (at this point, I also had one Gladiator tied up trying to kill the last Rechet). Finally, Cyprien got one of my guys, I got the Rechet, and we started a dice off for my last couple of Gladiators against Cyprien. The vampire again decided to stop working, and I (miraculously) killed Cyprien with a couple of very lucky rolls. That was a huge success for me in and of itself, killing a vampire with uninspired Gladiators, and I was ready to take on the world.

So, of course, the next Shade that flew at me killed both of my Gladiators.

Great game. Fun game. Full of Heroscape goodness. I had a great time overall.

True had been wanting to play an army with the Vikings and Marcu for a while now, the idea being to use the Knights/Vikings as a first wave and putting all of the Viking Spirits on Marcu for a super strong cleanup figure. I felt like it would be a good time to test out one of my customs, and I added two Treasure Glyphs to the map. We were also playing with the special rules for the central water spaces that Robber included (at the end of the round, figures in the water get a chance to heal a nearby Hero).

So first I moved Nhy with Battle Rush, and then the game began. Round 1 went as would be expected - True moving up his Knights with Finn and me moving Mohicans towards height, taking shots at Knights as I did so. True had some bad defense rolls at the beginning, meaning that my Mohicans killed a couple Knights with potshots before they started engaging. I made sure to engage Finn with a couple Mohicans to take a turn with Brave Arrow. Lava killed one Mohican, I think.

Round 2 Brave Arrow was able to grab one of the Treasure Glyphs right off (Defense +1) as my Mohicans fought the Knights. But things turned as True was able to kill the few Mohicans I had been able to get onto the central height areas at the edges of the map, so I fell back to shooting from range while he moved up more Knights and took the other Treasure Glyph with Finn (Revenant’s Tome). At the end of the round I threw Nhy at Finn. I’d hoped that earlier in the round I would have put more wounds on him with my Mohicans so Nhy could finish him off and steal his glyph, but the Mohicans had only put one wound on him, and Nhy’s attacks were blocked. Meanwhile True decided to throw Eldgrim into the mix as well, sending the Dwarf Viking after Brave Arrow. Lava killed a Knight and a Mohican and dealt a wound to Nhy, if I remember correctly.

Round 3 saw another turn as my Mohicans gained more traction. I killed Eldgrim and several Knights, pushing back onto the high ground. Finn, however, took no wounds. That stinker was defending like a champ. He killed some of my Mohicans as I tried to engage him to take turns with Brave Arrow. I never got that turn with Brave Arrow. He died before the end of the round, never having moved from where he grabbed the glyph.

Okay, my memory really isn’t that great, so I don’t remember specific rounds from here. I do remember that my Mohicans were fading, so I switched back to using Nhy who got some great rolls against Finn and killed him (Finn, however, had used up the Treasure Glyph the turn before though, so I didn’t get to steal it from him). Nhy then was killed by Knights as Thorgrim also came into play. Soon I only had one squad of Mohicans and Erevan remaining against his couple of Knights, Thorgrim, and Marcu. I sent in Erevan, who used his Fey Step and normal move to take the Defense Treasure Glyph as True brought Marcu up out of the start zone.

At the beginning of the new round, Erevan engaged Marcu and put a wound on him. True then revealed an OM on Thorgrim. Wanting to get more defense for Marcu, he decided to sacrifice Thorgrim (who was too far away from my units to do anything anyway - they were on the other side of the map) by having him jump into the lava.

And he rolled a 20.

It was probably my favorite Heroscape moment of my ’Scaping career.

So True had a Thorgrim who refused to die for the greater good, and Erevan and Marcu duked it out. At the end of the round, they both only had one life remaining, and we both had to roll for lava field damage. Both lived. Then I won initiative and killed Marcu, making True lose turn 1. Then my remaining Mohicans got within range of Thorgrim and killed the poor Viking who refused to die in molten lava. It was really funny that my Mohicans were actually shooting at someone standing on molten lava.

What a great game we play.

Hahaha I would've done the same thing if I were Thorgrim! "Wait, what? You're going to purposefully march me into molten lava..? Yeah, well, I'm not going to die just to spite you!"

Thanks for coming out today, folks! Nice turnout, it went smooth, and I think everyone had a good time! I would love to read some reports (especially from @Scaperedude , for his perspective on the Finals Frenzy Fiasco); I'll post mine within a few days! All right! I am very excited for this one. After having hashed out the details with a handful of others, here is what we came up with for the March Utah Monthly (see next post) -

UTAH MONTHLY MARCH 2017

Location: Fongo Bongo Games (1751 W 12600 S, Riverton)

When: March 25th, 11 AM

Cost: $5 (100% of entries will go to prize support! And donating prizes is always quite welcome as well, of course.)

Format: A number of people said they are itching for it, so it's time for TEAM BATTLE. You and an ally will fight together to defeat your two opponents. But here's the kicker - each game your ally will change randomly! Friends can become enemies, and vice-versa (so be sportsmanlike with your opponents, as they may very well be your partner in a later game)! Remember the rules regarding "friendly" vs. "you control" - so Raelin won't do anything for your partner, but Rhogar could (and be aware that glyphs are worded so that they only work for your army)!

- 310 point armies
- 12 figure limit (extra tiles will be provided if needed)
- SoV & C3V allowed, official Marvel allowed. RotV Raelin, Major Q9, and Deathreavers banned. (I'm almost always against bans of any kind, but these 3 make team army building too easy)
- Glyphs: Initiative+8, Defense +1, D20 +1, Move +2, Wound (Wannok)
- Four 55 minute rounds
- Roll for Initiative for each side, then take turns in a "figure 8" (as it would be too advantageous if one team were to get two turns in a row).
- If you show up, and no one else is using any of the same units as you, you'll be entered into a raffle for a cool prize.

If there happens to be an off number of players (such as a 1v2 or 1v1), loaner armies and order markers for the player(s) will be provided. They will be simple, effective builds, and at least 3 will be brought to choose from. They will be posted later.

They all looked very nice, but I only got to play on Break In The Ice. My thoughts on the maps.... I liked it, but tactically it wasn't my favorite. We played with the snow rules which SERIOUSLY bogged down the map, and made it difficult to employ basic strategy. Also with the placement of ruins/glaciers, it almost seemed there were two many obstacles to fight the opponent. Most of the game took place skirting around the outside of the glaciers on the height. Also the way the height is placed combined with the water it makes it rather difficult to get a double spaced figure up and around the edge of the maps. (Which is where you needed to send them because of the masses of snow in the middle.) Very aesthetically pleasing, but not my favorite battle map.

Hopefully this doesn't come off as sore loser, because I did manage to edge out a win on it, but these are just some things I noticed about the maps balance. The others looked really good though!! I witnessed some EPIC battles on tree field!!

Oh dear...I probably should have mentioned to The Dewk that that map was NOT designed or meant to be used with the snow rules :-/ I designed it knowing that using the snow rules would make it unbalanced and not competitive...but should have put that in the notes somewhere. That's my bad for not communicating that. sorry if you're games were a little frustrating or slow because of that.
