Crispy's Custom Cards: Henchmen

Here is my first official effort, using the GIMP, GreyOwl's custom layers, and Whitestuff's tutorial.

Sunfire was one of my favorites from the '70s, with his inferiority complex/arrogance and interesting powers.

Comments welcome.

Re: Crispy's Custom Cards

Sunfire looks very tough, normally,
but I like the way he gets tougher up close
in Hand to Hand,

Re: Crispy's Custom Cards

Nice to see my tutorial is useful
I'm finding Sunfire to be very similar to Ironman. Was that your intention?

As for the aesthetics of the card;
 • I'd rethink the font you're using. It seems quite large. The text is overlapping the card at the word 'medium' and 'life'. (that and I hate Comic Sans )
 • The 'Marvel' comic logo is a little too high, it is overlapping the card border.
 • The line 'and lava' needs to be a lined up under the line above it. (I'm not sure the 'and lava' even needs to be there, maybe it needs to be 'including lava' instead)
 • Watch the spacing in the special abilities text. Try and keep all of the spaces between special ability headings and the body text the same.
 • The 'he' in the double attack line doesn't need to a capital. (neither does 'defense' in the Martial Artist ability.)
 • You might want to have a look at the official cards to get a feel for the way that they are written. For example, the Martial Artist would probably be like this - If Sunfire is attacking an adjacent figure, add 1 die to his attack.
 • You may want to think about splitting the defense part into it's own ability.
 • You can see the Rising Sun background through body and arms of the figure.
 • Did you try red fog instead of the grey? The grey just doesn't look right.
Sorry if this is coming off a bit harsh, but it isn't intended to be that way. I've had a big day of marking tests at school so I'm in that sort of mode.

BTW, welcome to the card making fraternity. You've made a great start and will only get better with practice. I look back on the cards that I first made and get a strange urge to redo them all.

Re: Crispy's Custom Cards

Whitestuff,

No offense taken at all. Thanks for the great comments and suggestions.

I use comic sans mostly because I associate it with comics (duh). I do like the other fonts, but I have not found one that I really like, and so I stick with the comics...what fonts do you use/suggest?

I was not at all thinking of Iron Man when I made this. I was just trying to model Sunfire. Actually, I am not real satisfied with the 'official' version of Iron Man. He should be tougher, no?

Totally agree with you on the aesthetics stuff. Not my forte, and I need that kind of feedback - I focus more on the rules/effects side, and the cards are a way to put my thoughts down. I did very little clean-up on this card, now that you mention it. Now I know what needs to be done.

The transparency of the figure totally slipped past me. I was so excited to put him in front of the rising sun image that I missed that detail. Thanks.

Great tutorial! It is what got me convinced that I could actually do this. Thanks for the feedback, and I'll post a modified one here in a few days.

<img src="http://www.heroscapers.com/community/gallery/files/4/3/7/6/sunfire.jpg" alt="Sunfire V.2" />

How'bout this?

I used Trebuchet for the font - so many flippin' fonts in GIMP, I just roamed about 'til I found one that was legible and dark.

I think I covered most of the other points you made. I left the name in that funky font - kind of looks like flames, and I left the stats in Comic sans just to keep the Comic book-look.

I also changed his race to 'mutant' and his class to 'vigilante' to be more accurate.

Hmm. Something wrong with the image upload. I'll be back...

OK, I don't know what I am doing wrong here. The image is updated in the gallery and here is the link:
http://www.heroscapers.com/community/gallery/files/4/3/7/6/sunfire.jpg" alt="Sunfire V.2"

I have inserted it into the start of this message several times without success. I also noted that the original image has vanished from the first message - I deleted it since I was updating. I guess I should not have renamed it when I uploaded the new one?

To see pics here you need to use the square bracket with first on either end of the image url http://www.heroscapers.com/community.../6/sunfire.jpg

Re: Crispy's Custom Cards

I like Sunfire's Martial Artist and Fire Immunity specials, but think he could do without the Double Attack. It doesn't seem to fit his profile, for some reason. Regardless, thanks for making the custom, and welcome to the team!

Re: Crispy's Custom Cards

Sunfire for that point cost seems a little weak. I mean 4 defense and four life for 260 points?

Re: Crispy's Custom Cards

You are correct, as a matter of fact. I made an error entering the values in my spreadsheet.

Point value should be 220. I'll correct it.

Re: Crispy's Custom Cards

Updated again after a playtest session. Lowered the cost to 180.
