Greenspawn Assassin - For sale!

Boromir and I finished another game. It was:

I won with a 2-life Marcu (it was really close). With the extra attack on KTSA, the Greenspawns did have the offensive power they needed to kill enough figs (if thier screen had held), but they still didn't have nearly enough resilience to survive for multiple rounds. We decided to give them 4 defense, bump them back up to 50 points, and try again. If anyone else wants to help test them (if anyone cares that much...), just shoot me a PM.

I won with a full health Skahen, 1 Rat 2 and 2/3s Greenspawns and a 3 life Raelin. The Greenspawns work very well with Raelin, and with 4 defense had enough staying power even when they strayed from her Aura. 4 times I had TKN engaged to 3 Rats, and every time I rolled 1 Skull with KTSA. Braxas didn't miss a Squad figure with PAB, But couldn't get a single hero.
I really liked how they performed in this match.

I was Steamrolled. I killed Crixus pretty easily, but then the MWs came and killed a bunch of DCs, and then Sparty came, and insta-killed my first OP & a (maybe two, can't remember) Greenspawn... My Deathchasers got killed so fast that the Steamroller was on top of my Greenspawns before I did any damage. He finished with a 4-life Sparty, 5 Caps, & 4 MWs. Still, we decided they've been playtested well enough, so we're going to submit it to Auggies. Stay tuned, as we will most likely come up with another design before long...

I ran two battles with these armies. First match on a heavy Road/Forest map and the second match on heavy Swamp/Jungle terrain.

Summary
In both matches, the first round OM strategy was to lead with Archers to establish some ranged cover and then use OM-3 to bring up three Assassins. With their high movement, the Assassins have a good threat-range so for next round the OM-1 and X-OM would give a strong lunge against advancing units. In this match, it meant Assassins versus Vulcan ‘Borgs. This proved interesting as the Assassins high attack value made it through on a few attacks but the ‘Borgs redundant systems kept them going. With the Vulcan’s now engaged, it became a test of the Assassins survivability. Four attack Flame Throwers versus four defense Greenspawns was a good challenge and the 3 life of the Assassins kept them around. Since there were no more OM’s on the Assassins they basically pinned down the ‘Borgs and the Aubrien’s eventually finished them off.

With Shaitan and the Deathknights advancing, and at least 3 of the Greenspawns alive but wounded, the OM-1 and X-OM went back on the Assassins for another lunge. The high defense of the Valkrill undead were tough to get through. The counter attack of the Soul Weapons took out one of the injured Assassins but it was a few turns before Shaitan and the Deathknights could finish them off. This gave Sonlen and the Aubriens a chance to use ranged attacks and Dragon swoops to finish of the opposing army.

I would have liked to use the Greenspawns more but as the game went on, it became more effective to place order markers on either the Aubriens for 3 ranged attacks or Sonlen for healing + dragon swoop + ranged attack.

The Greenspawn Assassins stats are all great – 6 move, 4 attack, 4 defense, 3-life for a 50 point hero. That’s pretty awesome. I only used the Knife special attack a few times, probably because I didn’t quite have a screen for them – instead I used them as a screen for the elves. I liked the concept of the Ambush bonding.

Dislikes
Nothing wrong with this unit as a solid 50-point hero. The Ambush bonding requires you to draft at least three or four of them to really make their powers work. That’s an investment of 200-points. Our local playgroup favors 500 point armies so that is nearly half of your force. With that substantial of an investment, I wanted to use the Assassins for more than OM-1 or OM-3. One surge of three attacks of 4 is good, but it is very predictable and since you need to put both order markers on one of the Uncommon heroes – if you lose initiative your opponent has a chance to take out that specific ‘Spawn and cause you to lose a turn. For 200+ points, I wanted to use them more. For that investment, I would hope they could do more damage. They’d be great against a more hero-focused army but with SquadScape, they don’t hold up as well.

Rating
I would rate them as a C+ unit so I’m not sure how often I would chose them over other units in very competitive matches.

Balance- As designed 50-points seems low for high stats and a special attack.

The Greenspawns play well and their powers and stats are easy to understand. It will take a little strategy to figure out when to lunge with the Ambush bonding power, and it takes some coordination and synergy with other units to set up the Knife Throw SA benefits.

However, I’m not sure that Knife Throwing should be a Special Attack. I’d recommend making the Assassins simply Range 4 with a special power that reduces an opponent’s defense against non-ranged attacks for each figure they are engaged to. Dropping their base stats to Attack 3 Defense 3 would be more balanced if that was the approach.

Creativity-
Uncommon Hero bonding with the X order marker is cool and unique. Love the concept, wish it was stronger.

Theme-Lizardmen Assassins .. sounds awesome to me! But, thematically it was hard to imagine that a Size 3 lizardman has such a high attack, defense, and life.

After reading other playtest reports mentioning the Deathreavers as very helpful for the unit, maybe this unit should follow Utgar.

Thanks for the feedback! We were actually worried he might be overpowered. You'd have to play them behind a screen to get the full power of KTSA, it can be devastating.
