NAME OF THE PLAYTEST UNIT: Spider-Man (Avengers) Holiday Party

Army Test
Map: County Road
Units: Captain America, Winter Soldier, Bane, Antivenom, Scarlett Spider, 5th Precinct Cops vs Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Nebula, Rocket

In this match up of Guardians vs Avengers the Guardains of the Galaxy prevailed over the avengers pretty easily. The game started with Captain America and Winter Soldier moving against Gamora. Drax approached the battle in following rounds. It took a while to position the squads, but Cap and Bucky began the Assault on Gamora. They quickly took her out in Round 4. Some strong rolls and weak defense brought Gamora to her knees. Drax avenged his friend and took Captain America out of the game. Bane came to avenge Captain America and did some minor damage to bane. Star Lord did damage to Winter Soldier and Nebula was able to knock him out. Star Lord and Rocket then worked together to attack Spider-Man and Bane. Bane tried to juice up to do more damage and found that he had the unlikely experience of over doing his Venom Juice and knocked himself out. Rocket did some heavy damage on Spider-Man and took him and his treats out of the game before they got to be fully used. The rest of the game went quickly. The Guardians focused their energy on the cops and Antivenom. Scarlett Spider Was able to take out Rocket but was quickly subdued by Nebula and Star Lord.

The game ended with Drax 3 Damage, Nebula and Star Lord no damage.

Units: Captain America, Winter Soldier, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Dagger vs Star Lord, Drax, Gamora, Nebula, Rocket

This round had us running the teams back with some minor changes and vastly different outcomes. The Avengers assembled with their boosting power and devastated the Guardians of the Galaxy. In Round 1 Ironman came in contact with Drax and in a roll that used ALL of Ironman’s auxiliary power he rolled 5 skulls. Drax was totally unprepared for this assault and rolled no shields and was out of the game instantly. As the other heroes moved into position Winter Soldier took full advantage of the Captain America and Spider-Man boost and rolled 6 skulls on Rocket Racoon who was barely able to defend himself. While he was still reeling from this attack Captain America finished him off. Captain Marvel displayed her power to Gamora and the guardians were worried. Nebula began moving in on the Avengers and was inflicting some damage on Captain America and Winter Soldier, Winter Soldier returned the favor. Both teams repositioned themselves, Spider-Man gave Captain America a cookie. Then came back in full fury during round 6. Ironman recharged and dealt four damage to Star Lord while Captain Marvel continued to assault Gamora with her hugely bolstered attack. She benefited from Captain America, Spider-Man, Height and a damage glyph in play. Round 7 was the end for the Guardians. Ironman dealt the final blow to Star Lord, Captain Marvel knocked Gamora out of the match. In a fit of rage Nebula responded by taking out Captain America with her Vengeful Strike, Captain America’s dying words were, why didn’t eat the cookie Spider-Man gave me. She continued her rage by dealing some serious damage to the Winter Soldier. The victory was brought to completion by Spider-Man and his Fruit Cake. After eating the cake himself he did an automatic damage to Nebula. It must have been enough because on his attack Spider-Man knocked Nebula out of the game and brought the Guardians of the Galaxy low for their earlier date.

THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT'S COST, BALANCE, & DRAFTABILITY:
His cost is probably just about right. He is not someone I would think to grab first but the extra attack dice for adjacent heroes is pretty powerful, especially when you can pair it with Captain America, Height and an attack glyph if it is on the board. I think with someone like Scarlet Witch he could be a cheap devastating helper. If she had height advantage, Captain America Buff, Spider-Man Buff she can be very hard hitting. He was balanced by the fact that his gifts weren’t game changers, but bolstered him a little bit. He himself doesn’t bring a lot to attack or defense but his combination helps.

GENERAL THOUGHTS ON THE TESTED UNIT:
Overall, he was good. Not a real shiny character (someone I would build a team around or be excited for) but he is a good supporting roll. If I need someone with small points I would add him. The food glyphs were honestly a little confusing for me to remember when to use, transfer, etc. Before turn, after turn. In the future I might create a checklist for myself. In game it was hard to transfer to. Since he wasn’t one of my main people it was harder to make room to move him around. Without Captain Marvel’s move another power he really would have been left behind. The only other thing is the Drunken Resilience food option. I really dislike that. I play with my son and he plays with his friends. I don’t like promoting Drunkenness. I get the humor as an adult. I would prefer a different name.

Overall, more fun than I expected when I first started.

Pre-Release Checks:

1) The OP "Rulings and Clarifications" says that Spider-Man "starts the game with one Food Equipment Glyph on his card." However, Avengers Holiday Party instructs the player to put "two different Food Glyphs on this card" at the start of the game. I think the power is correct regarding the number.... however...

2) Avengers Holiday Party and Secret Santa refer to "Food Glyph(s)." Should they say "Food EQUIPMENT Glyph(s)" ? The term "Equipment" seems to be the standard, see Batman (Utility Belt) and Night Thrasher. Which leads to the next question....

3) Should Spider-Man's powers refer to the fact that he can have two Food (Equipment) Glyphs on his card? Again, looking at Batman (Utility Belt) and Night Thrasher and the Equipment Glyph Rules. Suggesting this language be added to Secret Santa (Holiday party seems crowded):

Spider-Man can equip a Food Equipment Glyph even if there are other Food Equipment Glyphs on this card, up to a maximum of 2. Spider-Man cannot lose these glyphs by receiving wounds unless he is destroyed.

Finally, 4) Should we update the third post to add the Food glyph descriptions?

I'm actually gonna leave off "Spider-Man cannot lose these glyphs by receiving wounds unless he is destroyed." It's totally a Spider-Man move to have his snacks destroyed in a fight before a party.
