Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

Got my 2nd game of walking dead in yesterday. I played against my brother with the horseshoe accessory. It was his first game. He picked rick with a rifle and carl with a pitchfork. I picked glenn maggie and dale with a pistol. On turn one I tried rushing some walkers with glenn and maggie to get some pickups freed up and shot a alker with dale. I knocked the shot walker down but got glenn and maggie both bitten. My bro did the same with his walker with the gun but had carl go smash its head in. Second turn he blew dales head off from across the board. Maggie got killed by walkers and carl stabbed glenn in the head for the win. Way fun even though I got beat real bad. No pics because nothing is painted and we just played on the mat it came with.

What's the horseshoe accessory?

That's a quick and bloody game. It was si fast, you only had 2 events. How many walkers did you start with?

Kind of bad luck with both Maggie and Glenn getting bitten. Unless I have a nice melee character, between having a natural at least white melee die and a hand weapon. I don't like to engage walkers 1v1. I prefer to 2v1 against them with weaker characters, as bites happen easier otherwise

You did move all walkers within 10 inches of the shooter, towards the shooter each time for Mayhem right? That's the thing about shooting, is it attracts a bunch towards you.

Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

There were about 5 events or so. I was giving the short version for lack of time. My brothers horseshoe accessory is the lucky horseshoe stuck up his butt. He has beaten me in the last I dont know how many dice games and I just roll horribly every game and he does fantastic. Every game we play. He won 1000 bucks at the casino not too far from my place just a few hours before. I think it was about 8 walkers for the 100pt game. You round up right? I also didnt realize his rifle reached out 30inches. We didnt use guns my first game. We did use mayhem. Just happened to be in the far corners of the board. He got mauled by a walker after he blew off dales head. Im pretty sure we nailed it on getting the rules right. I just had bad luck. He also ran out of ammo after shooting dale in the head. By then glen and maggie were bitten and I got an extra wound on them at rounds end a couple times. Thats how maggie died. Glenn only had 1 wound left when carl stabbed him in the head with a pitchfork. I also checked out the custom characters guidelines in the days gone by book. They are fantastic. All the attributes have a point based system. It will be super easy to recreate the modern zombicide survivors into characters to play. Ive been discussing how much fun a 3 or 4 player match will be on a 3x3 board with my brothers and bro in law. Bigger point limit as well for more guns and mayhem. Very fun game. Setup isnt too bad either.

Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

Need cover when playing with guns. Those extra defense dice will help. Also, some equipment cards are good to have to help protect somewhat vs ranged attacks. That must have been a good roll vs Dale. I had that happen once against me. Headshot vs a survivor only adds one more damage, but that was enough against my guy. They also don't turn into walkers when they die from a headshot.

Glad you had fun. Definitely will take some learning about the nuances.

5 done and many to go. Just have to spray varnish these when it's not so humid, and then add a tuft of grass or shrub to each base to add a little more color.

Not the best job, but I can only spend so much time on white, and when there are a lot of them, it is what it is.

Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

Did you go with a white primer? Im thinking about redoing the troopers I did a few years ago from my Imperial assault core with all the rest of my new expansions. Im thinking that might be the best route. I usually go grey or black but they are mostly white. Im almost done with my first batch of dice towers. Completely finished with 11 of the 16. The others are in their final stages. I did get some cool stuff all at once in the mail. I got my nickstarter with my other frostgrave stuff. Love the alterior motives cards. Also got the tiny terrain and the walking dead stuff at the same time. I also picked up one of those harry potter nanofigure gryphindor tower. It was at walmart for 20 bucks. The things looks great for 28mm figures and it already looks like ruins for frostgrave.

I had primed them grey and then sprayed them white from above, using the Zenithal method, thinking the grey undersides would help with shading. Well, that wasn't as good as I wanted it in this application. So the other 9 that I didn't start finish painting yet, I sprayed them with more white but from the sides to get more of lower areas white. We'll see how that goes.

The time consuming part is going getting the the black into certain areas and also using a thinned down dark tone wash to brush on along all the ridges on the armor and certain other areas. They don't all show up on in the pictures because some of it is washed out with the lighting. But it adds some depth and definition to what would otherwise be a stark black and white finish. But then I have to go with a couple thin coats of white over everything to clean up some of it and narrow down some of the wash lines.

Sounds like Christmas at the Trex household You'll like the Ulterior Motives cards when you play, they add some neat stuff. You don't even need to play a standard scenario, as these cards kind of create their own scenario with you trying to secretly or not secretly accomplish something.

That's great that your dice towers are coming along. Not sure how you find time to get all that stuff done

Edit: Actually I think my next 9 Stormtroopers from my first core set may go a bit better. Aside from getting more white on them from the sides as well as the top when priming, I also did a lot better with the black just now with them. I used a real small brush and thinned the black a bit more. A lot better for precise application to tight spots without getting much on the white that I would have to mess with later. For some spots getting the black on white wouldn't be such a big deal, but for other spots, it's more of a pain. So it looks like these will go faster and that makes me a lot happier

Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

Thanks for the tips @Hahma . Looking back at my other troopers I did years ago they look horrendous. Ill be priming them white and using a thinned down black for accents. Im going to add some accenting to some and then use my army painters strong quickshade to them. Those towers that Ill post soon have taken up my last couple weekends but they turned out beautiful. People that buy them will love them. I put quite a bit of work and care into them. @Tornado , im going to modify the back sides of the harry potter playset so it will look right at home on my frostgrave table. Ill add some dollar store foam stone walls along with some wooden beams and ruined plank floors. I recommend anyone playing 28mm fantasy wargames to pick this up. I dont care much for the metal nanofigs. I also love the book cases in the box but not a fan of the chairs. They are hollow on the back and bottom.

Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

Looks great @Hahma . I love stormtroopers. Not sure when I paint mine again. I did however get in a 4 player walking dead game. We played on a hex table that was probably about 3ft or so across. We all played 100pts. I played with Negan using a rifle. One player used tyrese with riot gear and riot helmet with a riot baton and a cleaver. The next player used rick with a shotgun and carl unarmed. The last player used billy greene with a sniper rifle with an added scope with bandages. Early on billy killed carl from across the board. Shot tyrese and shot my negan. We were able to manipulate walkers to surround him and bite him. He ended up succumbing to his walker wounds. Negan also got shot by rick after rick had to kill his zombie son. Negan shot rick then engaged him. Negan, rick, and tyrese all were almost dead when negan and rick fought. Negan killed rick with a headshot. Then shortly after killed tyrese with a rifle. It was fun. The only thing I had questions about were about walkers. The armoured walker has 2 defense dice. I thought walkers only attacked. Also if a character engages another survivor does that negate the other characters actions in the action phase?

Re: Frostgrave, Halo Ground Command and other tabletop minis

Walkers use defense dice when being shot at or any other ranged attack. The rule about them only attacking is when they are in melee, because that's the only time they can attack.

Yes, if your character is engaged in melee (base to base) by an enemy model or Walker moving into base contact with it before it has a chance to act, then it may not be activated that action phase. Page 11, 2 paragraphs above Panic Check.

If the enemy is prone, and you engage them, they can't do anything on their turn and can only defend in melee. But if your character is engaged with a prone enemy, it can move (1st action) away and then take a 2nd action. Page 26 under Prone Combatants.

Did you guys have much terrain to block LoS, or at least partial to give extra red or white defense dice per piece of cover between shooters and defenders? Like Frostgrave, you definitely need lots of cover when playing with ranged weapon survivors
