Re: Early Wyrmling Strategy Musings - More than meets the ey

May I make a small strategic theory?

Blues are your clean up. Their ability is more flexible because it can cover a further distance, the White's ability is better when there are plenty of figures near by, but when the board is thinned that won't be the case and your opponent may be retreating to a more defensible position. The fact that they cost more means you may want less of them, I think that slides them into cleanup in most situations. Their higher attack value will kick figures off the board faster while Whites will try to use attrition through defense to insure they can actually do the cleanup.

My on Blues.

No blade of grass shall go unturned
Let those who have the daylight spurned
Tread not where this green lamp has burned.

Re: Early Wyrmling Strategy Musings - More than meets the ey

Here's some thoughts...

Depending on how reliant your army is on the Wyrmlings(I'd say if its 75% or more of your points your reliant) it might be best to place OM#1 or if your certain they'll stay alive OM#3 on the Whites. Other than their defense being higher(which means a little more survivability) they are just 30 points. I'd draft say 3 whites along with a black and a blue for 155 points. Leave a white in the back and take turns with the other 2 whites alternating between each one. Pick your poison acid target with the black one and then do a quick ice shard with a white. Depending on how you put down OM's and how the 20D treats you on initiative, you could get a preemptive strike or a strike with an uncountered attack. Should clean up time come around, the OMs on your white wyrmling in the back and your blue wyrmling can do damage. I think it mostly depends on the white wyrmlings defense why that'd work. This army use that particular format...

Whitex3//90
Blackx1//30
Bluex1//35
TSAx3//195
Raelin(RotV)//80
Zettians//70/////////500pts.

The main fighting force is the Zettians with height and Raelin's defense boost. The TSA hang around to put a hole in an advancing army with a sheer 6 defense and 3 attacks of 3(assuming height). Whatever your foe wanted to use as screens, the black wyrmling burns through. Ice shards aren't strong, but they can work eventually puncture.

My customs.
NE Ohio Tourney - TBA
SW Ohio Tourney - NHSD 550 points

The problems for this army are common squads in large numbers or with range, and the problem-for-everyone Vydar range. If I were not being General-specific, I'd take mostly Red Wyrmlings, with a couple of Black. My Einar army will, of course, have all Red. If you consider 2 as a squad, a mimimum of 4 seems right, and those who advocate a minimum of 3 of any common squad would likely say 6 is the minimum. So . . .

120 Kaemon (or Tagawa Samurai)
120 Red Wyrmlings x 4
110 NotNW
100 Kozuke (or Gurei-Oni)
60 Izumi (or 2 more Red Wyrmlings)
510

I know they are not the best, but thematically the Tagawa Samurai Archers are so . . .

150 Red Wyrmlings x 5
130 TSA x 2
120 Kaemon (or Tagawa Samurai)
110 NotNW
510

I just re-read R˙chean's treatise on the Tagawa Samurai, and want to use them, but the only way they fit is to sub out Kaemon for them, and I'm scared !

In General , I think an army with a Wyrmling component is stronger (and more balanced) than a Wyrmling-centric one.
Now that I have actually played them . . .

http://www.heroscapers.com/community/blog.php?b=1278

they are even better in this role (killing ranged commons and commons in general) than I had hoped. I now believe that the optimum number of Wyrmlings is 5-7 (150-210 points).

Re: Early Wyrmling Strategy Musings - More than meets the ey

Another benefit of using them in a single colour is that they effectively become a 2-man squad that is quite a thorn in the side of Braxas/Grimnak/Zelrig (although not the Mezzodemons). As heroesthey requre a much higher roll to be destroyed by the former two and take no penalty from Zelrig.

You must have taken the Blue Pill from Agent Carr.

Re: Early Wyrmling Strategy Musings - More than meets the ey

Yes, but at one life and only 2 attacks and no specials that are effective against those dragons, they aren't really a thorn either. Braxas can kill one per turn quite easily as can Zelrig.

They can annoy Grimnak however, since his 2 attack is quite ineffectual.

Now through May 28th, the Louisville region is in desperate need of platelets - call the Red Cross if you are interested in donating!
